Title: Sequin jacket
Post by: dolcevita on January 26, 2020, 20:41:26 PM
Afternoon, all.  After a busy couple (3 or 4) years with work, house moves and stuff, I'm finally getting back into more regular sewing.  I've done a few items over the months but I'm working on re-booting my wardrobe now that's sadly in need of a refresh.  Ever practical and thinking about how much use I will get out of things, I've made a sequin jacket.  It was one of those things that just had to be done and the fabric has been in my stash for a little while.

The pattern is from Burda magazine, issue 12/2018, so a little while ago.  I've always been a sucker for a bit of sparkle so I thought that this was a very pretty piece.  The sequin fabric is mesh and quite stretchy with it so I had to do some final faffing around where it was bagging at the hem.  It still does a little, but not so much that I can't live with it. The lapels and front facing are in crepe, the inside is lined with satin and the side panels of the body and undersleeves are in ponte roma.  The latter change is because I didn't have enough sequin fabric to do the whole thing but it makes it more comfy to wear without sequins catching on sequins underneath.

Cutting the fabric sends bits of sequin everywhere, as bad as cutting cuddle fleece or fake fur, in it's own way.  I thought it might be tricky to sew, but it went through the sewing machine without a single complaint.  No skipped stitches or nasties anywhere, so a pleasant surprise.

So, here's my new jacket:

Ooh, sparkly!  That's lovely.  Sometimes you just have to make the thing you want to make... now you need somewhere to go!

Thanks, Acorn.  I've never been scared of being overdressed so I'm sure it will get an outing soon.

Wow! That's lovely. It seems remarkable that it sewed so easily. Good idea to use a smooth fabric for the side panels, even if it was due to necessity.

That’s great.  I’m just picturing you shopping in Sainsbury’s in it!   :)
Great idea for the side panels.  I’ve had a couple of sequin tops with short sleeves and they can make your arms really sore.

What a lovely jacket!  It's reminded me that I have several sequinned pieces in the stash...

Am I brave enough to use them though?  ;)

That looks good - and I've always wondered how on earth you sew something like that fabric.  Does the machine needle just sew right through the sequins?

Yes, no messing around with clipping bits back, the fabric went straight through under the needle with no messing around.  I was prepared to have to do some tedious clipping as with fake fur, but it wasn't necessary.

@b15erk  - go for it, Jessie! Life's too short to be frightened of a few sequins!

Seriously fabulous jacket - I want it despite never going anywhere that requires sequins!
