In the wardrobe / Fabric advice
« on: February 19, 2024, 14:39:30 PM »
I’ve booked a workshop to make McCalls M7324 in March.  I’ll be buying online as our local fabric shop has closed down.  Please could you advise me on what is meant by “lightweight cotton?”  Are there any keywords I should look for?

TIA

Patterns Discussion / Jacket pattern advice, please
« on: June 11, 2023, 06:45:09 AM »
Please does anyone know of a simple jacket pattern in which the sleeves are cut out in one piece with the front and back?   Like Simplicity 7893, but costing less than £47  :scream:

Because I am a fool who is influenced by social media, I decided to participate in Stephen West’s mystery knitalong.   :faints:

There are four clues which are released every Thursday during October.

Clue 4 will be released this week.  I’ve finished Clue 1.

Stephen says, “Embrace you pace.  It’s not a race.”  #teamsnail

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Stewarding at FOQ
« on: June 26, 2022, 20:24:08 PM »
Again, I have signed up to be a steward at this year's Festival of Quilts.

All sessions still need more stewards, so if you are interested, please let me know.  You will receive free access to the show on the days on which you act as a steward, show guides and access to the show half an hour before it opens.  There is also a stewards' lounge in which you can eat your lunch and store your purchases.   There is also great camaraderie amongst the stewards.  I met some lovely peeps when I stewarded (I'm sure that's a word.).  And you get to wear white gloves and touch the quilts.

A Good Yarn / Knitting for babies - decisions, decisions
« on: May 31, 2022, 12:03:12 PM »
Two of my colleagues are going to have babies in the summer.  I’d love to knit. Them each something but can’t decide what.

Cardigan/jacket
Advantage -quick to knit
Disadvantage - neither of them know what they’re having so it would need to be neutral.  It would need sewing up and I hate sewing up.

Or a blanket, which would take longer but wouldn’t need sewing up.

I’d be grateful if you have any pattern suggestions.

TIA

I will never, ever make another quilt using Marti Michell templates.  (To be accurate, I haven't made a quilt using them, but I have made all the components out of a gazillion stupid little fiddly pieces.)

I will make another log cabin quilt.  I've made two before and enjoy the process.
I'd like to make another Bargello quilt.  Maybe a smaller one.

How about you?

Embroidery and Embellishment / Support Ukrainian designer
« on: March 13, 2022, 13:46:35 PM »
For my January page of Roxy’s Journal of Stitchery, I bought a design from Etsy for the rabbit.  I didn’t realise at the time but the designer is in Ukraine.

If you would like to support her, here is a link to her Etsy shop.

Patterns Discussion / Simple summer top for beginner dressmaker
« on: February 25, 2022, 12:53:54 PM »
Please could anyone suggest a simple summer top pattern in case I give in to the temptation to join in the ‘Here comes Summer’ competition?  I’m thinking of something pretty in a cotton lawn.  Nothing too short or tight and I don’t like to show the tops of my arms.  (Body issues?  Me?).

TIA

Embroidery and Embellishment / Roxy's Journal of Stitchery
« on: January 23, 2022, 10:29:32 AM »
I seem to have joined into this slow stitching challenge on YouTube from the Roxy Creation channel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiYYfbQbgPg&list=PLjZ7ebk-py28hyS6YEnqRIgmRW-Ji_6TX

This lasts six months and involves making a book.  Most people are using the cover of an old book but cutting up old books doesn't sit well with me and so I'm going to use a piece of thick card that came with my calendar and make my own cover.

To start, we were taught 20 stitches.  I haven't done any embroidery since I was a child and so many of these were new to me but wouldn't be to you if you're an embroiderer.  Here are my first ten:-

Each month, there is a prompt for background and embellishment.  This month, it is vintage lace and a rabbit.  I haven't done much stitching on it yet, but have done the background and the rabbit.

Both look like they need a good press!

Not too late to join in if you fancy this project.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / 100 days, 100 blocks
« on: December 11, 2021, 08:37:10 AM »
Starting in July, I am planning to participate in the 100 days, 100 blocks sew along by Gnome Angel.  I’d like to use Tula Pink fabrics like the ones used in this quilt…

arranged in a rainbow running diagonally as in this quilt…

I have never used Tula Pink fabric.  Please could any Tula Pink experts advise me on suitable ranges for this project?
