Fun with Fabric / Re: Spring Green Polka dot
« on: November 25, 2017, 11:17:44 AM »
Have you tried Makower 830/G65 colour is called New Apple? Not sure which Spraytime (2800) you have there, G46 is Apple and G02 is Lime in the Spraytime range.
Sod's law tells me that "New" Apple is not the same as Apple so will be close but not close enough. No idea why basic fabric blenders have to change other than making us all buy more than we need just in case it's discontinued - which takes me back to customer service gone AWOL! Fun with Fabric / Re: Measuring the stretch of knits?
« on: November 24, 2017, 09:09:36 AM »
Hernibs - that fabric looks lovely but do get a sample because I have a feeling it might fray when cut. Look at the Jalie site for videos on sewing knit fabric with a sewing machine.
Can't help with actually using sweater knits, it's on my list of things to do.

A Good Yarn / Re: First Foray into Knitting
« on: November 21, 2017, 16:11:30 PM »
I can't knit or crochet properly if I'm trying to do something else. I have joined a crochet group, mainly for the social side, but get very little done in 2 hours that relates to stitch progress! I find evening TV hardly worth watching. If I'm ever found with the TV on in the afternoon, I'm ill and feeling awful

Another knitter! Well done and it does get easier. Agree with Jessie that Very Pink videos are excellent.
I returned to knitting a few years ago and have used Knit Pro Symphony interchangeables ever since. I find it much easier to hold the work with most of it in my lap on a cable than trying to hold it up on a rigid long needle.
Keep it small and simple to start with. Do you need dishcloths, made with 100% cotton? I would avoid the very cheap plastic needles - they are not helpful with getting tension even :'(
Crochet next - it's even quicker than knitting  ;)

A Good Yarn / Re: Any bobbin lace makers here?
« on: November 11, 2017, 20:07:48 PM »
I did some bobbin lace years ago. I enjoyed making the weighted bead rings for the bobbins but the family complained that it was noisy when actually making lace!  Beyond bookmarks I really couldn't think of anything practical to make as I'm not into lace collars etc. I did make a lovely swan that I meant to mount on black card and frame but I have no idea where it is now. Some of the wooden bobbins are exquisite and the glass beads. Must dig it all out someday and have another go

Sewing Machines / Re: I want a new machine but which?
« on: November 09, 2017, 07:57:39 AM »
Well done, I hope she gives you many happy and productive hours. Heirloom Creations have a series of videos on that machine (and others). Each video is short and deals with one topic so it is easy to find what you need.

Have fun choosing a new machine - you deserve it, but take your time. Take your own fabric and try out as many as you can. Don't be seduced by hundreds of stitches, most of them will never be used!
Above all don't be tempted to get rid of the old machine, you never know when old faithful will come in useful!

Well done everyone and congratulations to Sandra for her masterpiece. Can we have a pic of TSP bear looking snug and smug with his quilts? A bear can never have too many quilts.

House Beautiful / Re: Options for window dressing
« on: November 01, 2017, 08:51:15 AM »
If you need to keep costs down, how about a blackout roller blind in the window recess and down to the sill with a lightweight decorative curtain hanging from a pole outside the recess? I agree extendable poles catch the rings but if curtains are light you can still flick them across.
Sounds like a major upheaval so take your time to settle in and get sorted

A Good Yarn / Re: Best Way to work with Charts
« on: October 06, 2017, 18:28:56 PM »
I often admire Drops patterns but cannot get my head around the charts for knit or crochet. I find normal crochet charts really useful but Drops obviously have another method. I've yet to find a video or tutorial to help either - they no doubt think it's so obvious that no explanation is needed   :S.
Last week I left a Drops pattern with a crochet tutor so maybe she can work it out although at first glance she found it confusing.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: Which Overlocker?
« on: October 06, 2017, 17:43:53 PM »
Juki make excellent overlockers and I cannot understand why Bernina no longer use them for manufacture. The needle threader is a bit hit and miss on mine but I have no problem threading. I personally would not pay extra for air threading. You do not need a free arm for sleeves and baby/children sleeves would not fit as they are too small. Just sew on the inside and rotate the sleeve above the sewing bed.

Thank you for that link and info. I don't do swim or dance wear yet but no idea what direction the grand children will take in the future. It's always good to be prepared 8)

A Good Yarn / Re: Circular Needle Supplier Help needed

Wow! No stopping you now.
ML does need playing with but like you say, once you've "got it" it all falls into place.
I nearly gave up at the first attempt because I read the instructions before picking up needles or yarn - it felt like I was trying to learn a foreign language. No idea how we all managed before You Tube etc.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: Machine recommendations.

Well done - ex demo machines are usually good buys as they have had minimal use and any factory problems will have been sorted. The boyfriend sounds a keeper - nurture and encourage his interest!!

I should have made myself clear - the Elna Lotus I bought was an old one which was Swiss made and cost me very little. I believe they have a new version with the same name but that is all.
I have old Singers which are wonderful but I wouldn't give house room to a new plastic Singer.
You need to tryout an alternative to your Bernina, maybe borrow or hire? Once you become a Bernina convert it is difficult to work with anything else and it's also difficult to explain why they are so different. Does your Bernina have a padded carry case and could you feasibly get it in and out of the car? To buy a modern machine just for classes seems a lot of money.
