Title: Report an issue here ... adding @Mr Twingo
Post by: Francesca on May 16, 2017, 11:29:28 AM
Hello everyone,

As we occasionally have issues that crop up, I'm going to make this thread a place to share them. I know we have the suggestion box thread but it's a bit unwieldy.

I'm going to ask that chatter is kept to a minimum in this thread. If you want to talk more about the issue, feel free to make a separate thread but be aware that thread won't be a place to specifically report an issue, and I might miss it. I will work through the bugs in this thread only.

I'm also going to ask that all issue reports are posted in the following manner:

1. Describe the issue as succinctly as you can
2. When does the issue occur? (Always, when I go on my profile, when I send a message etc)
3. Is the issue intermittent or constant?
4. Do you have a link to the issue?
5. What browser are you using?
6. What device? (Desktop, laptop, Kindle, iPhone etc)
7. What OS? (Windows, Mac, Ubuntu etc)

Please then always provide a screenshot even if you think it means nothing. Unless, of course, you can't reproduce the issue a second time.

A screenshot really helps me out.

Sorry if this in the wrong place, wasn't sure if I had to tag it on to your message or start a separate thread.

1. I started there anyway you could move the footer on the forum page to the left as it blocks the chat box and makes it difficult to see what's been written or what you are writing.

2. Just occurs when using the chat room.

3. It's constant when using chat.

4. I'm using the chrome browser.

5. I have an iPad

I have attached a screenshot.

I'm having trouble with "recent unread topics" but it appears I'm not the only one. Trawling through the main menu looking for last post Today is tedious!
Yesterday I posted a response but it did not appear so I rewrote it and assumed it was operator error. It has just happened again, wrote a reply, click on post and nothing. Tried several times but worried it would duplicate over and over. Finally the post appeared but BEFORE another response that I read while I was typing. Appears something is getting scrambled somewhere?

Hi Maximum,

This query is being discussed here: http://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,1013.0.html

I am writing updates in that thread. I've been discussing with the SMF support community but have raised it up to the SMF software team now as the community wasn't able to help with the issue.

Thx. Is the second problem of my replies not posting part of the same issue or something else. Perhaps I should have split into 2 separate posts to make it clear - sorry.

Apologies I mixed the two issues together.

Can you please review the first post and let me know the details. Also if you can provide a time immediately after this occurs it would help me greatly.

The last time I had trouble getting a reply to actually post was June 8th. It did finally go at 21.13 but prior to that I must have clicked on "post" at least 6 times. Can't remember the previous occasion, life and several large glasses of red stuff have have got in the way! No problems today so might be a one off.

I haven't been able to tally up an error log with that time. It does sometimes happen (it can be a case of your connection dropping, or ours) but if it happens again please let me know.

Topic Reply Emails
In the last 2 days when I get an email to say someone has responded to a topic I'm following the link does NOT take me to the post referred to!
It's always worked before but certainly today (3rd July), and I'm fairly sure yesterday,I have had several such emails yet the link takes me to something older that I have already read. If I go back to the email and click the link again it successfully 'finds' the post it refers to.
I have closed down TSP and Chrome and switched off the iPad and iPhone between logging on but to no effect.
Not a major issue especially if no one else has noticed or commented as I do get there in the end :)

Thanks for letting me know.

So you're getting update emails and it's just taking you to entirely the wrong thread?

Can you send me the link for the thread it's taking you to (from the email) vs the one you're supposed to be going to?
Title: Re: Report an issue here
Post by: Maximum on July 04, 2017, 12:39:47 PM
Sorry I obviously didn't make it clear!
The link takes me to the correct thread but lands on an older post that I have already read rather than the post by "name of person" referred to in the email.
Clear as mud??!

Just as I thought everything was OK and links were all working today on iPhone and iPad it has just happened again!
I have just opened an email dated 4/7/17 @ 14.05 re Sorry I've been gone post which should have taken me to a reply by Pinkstar. Instead the link took me to Catllar's reply dated 3/7/17 @ 17.54. I had to scroll down to get to Pinkstar's post.

I hope I manage to post a reply here, today the forum has been awfully slow and stopped loading when I (unsuccessfully) tried to reply in several threads.

ETA: On second attempt I managed to reply here, however, replies with picttures in other threads timed out, and when trying to repost led my to 'start a new thread'.
Is anyone else having similar problems? It can't be my internet connection, as other websites work just fine.

In Iminei's posts 40 and 44 I believe there are pictures, but all I get is a 'no entry' sign. Any ideas why?  Other people can see them because they've commented on them. Pictures in earlier and later posts in that thread show up fine.

Iminei's pictures are hosted by Google, and I can only see them if I'm logged into my Google account - which I usually am, fortunately.

Although if I do log out of Google and then log back in again I have to close and reopen my browser and possibly also clear my cache before the pictures come back.

Mea Culpa ...

My Bad Girls

I had deleted the images from the album (in an effort to clean it up and keep it relevant) ...
hence they could not be found.

I have removed post 40 and put the final binding fabric back in the album and post 44  of the thread.

Sorry!

This isn't a forum issue. It's an issue with how Im shares photos. She shares them from a Google Photos album. The confusing thing is that some of us have ended up with viewing privileges because Google assigns viewing privileges to each person. And sometimes when she moves photos around in albums, we lose or gain the ability to see them!

Had a look through the logs and i couldn't see an issue relating to your login but hopefully it doesn't happen again.

If it does, please jot down the date and the exact time as I can then match it up with the logs which give me a little bit more information.

I haven't had the same problems the others had, but I tried to click that I "liked" something yesterday and I was informed that I had already liked it!
I hadn't though - it was in a post I had not even looked at before. Doesn't matter much in the great scheme of things, but just thought I'd mention it.

I don't seem to be getting email notifications of new replies to threads any more.  A few days ago, I did stop notifications for (I thought) just one thread, but now I'm not getting any at all.  I've checked settings, but notifications are enabled, and I've also checked my junk/spam/bin/other rubbish folders in my email.

Hi B&S,
yes we have been having a problem with notifications this past week, making the forum unusually quiet at the mo....

C3PO is on it as I type and will be starting a dedicated thread to let people know what we will be doing about it.

Thank you for letting us know.

Post by: Greybird on October 05, 2017, 12:08:34 PM
i'm reporting this in case it might be affecting other people. When I was in TSP late yesterday evening, my computer security thingy (Avast) came up with a warning that a threat had been detected and insisted I do a virus scan. I did that, went off to bed and forgot all about it. I have come into TSP twice this morning and both times got a warning that a threat had been detected.

It's telling me it's dealt with the threat, but I thought I'd better mention it.

Sorry, I couldn't do a screen shot because it didn't stay on there long enough for me to figure out how to do it.

Same here, Greybird. Every time I come on here this morning, I've had the same warning and my anti-virus has blocked it.

Don't know how to do a screenshot, but I jotted it down.

I don't know if this is related to the above as I am not computer tech-minded, but since yesterday evening each time I visit the forum my laptop acts strangely, like the processor or something is going into overdrive and the fans speed up and the thing feels mega hot and is racing away... it stops when I shut down Firefox.
It doesn't happen when I visit any other site.
(I have an elderly macbook btw).
I'll have to leave now as it is doing it again  :o

... No, it's not avast, its avg.
It's both as Avast took over  (https://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/07/07/avast_1_3bn_dollar_avg_buyout_offer/) AVG last year.  I tried both of them before the merger, but ditched them both for the free version of Bitdefender (https://www.bitdefender.co.uk/).

I googled this and it looks as if this is a trojan (https://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-coinhive-miner-virus/) that might have piggy-backed a download.  I am using a Mac desktop and have not seen this flag when logging into TSP or any other fora.
Title: Re: Report an issue here

I'm looking into the issue.

I can explain a little bit what's going on here, and it is an issue, but luckily not one with fears about personal data or anything, but it appears one of our site add-ons has a bitcoin miner attached. This means the bitcoin miner uses your computer processing power to mine bitcoins (which are used as currency) so they are essentially using the power of your PC rather than their own. So it's not nice at all obviously and we need to get rid of it BUT you are not going to have personal data stolen or anything... just wanted to allay those fears.

Looking into it now. Please always make sure your antivirus software is up to date too, sounds like most people have it and it's sorted things out :)

Really sorry about this guys, these things happen :(

I too have received warnings that this threat has been secured, in fact several times now and I am also on the full version of AVG.

Incidentally both my husband’s computer and mine have the same settings for connection to the internet and e-mail, however my laptop is the only one that is used to connect to TSP, so I do wonder if this Trojan as Uttaretch calls is has come in on something connected with TSP, as my husband hasn’t had this notice at all.

Incidentally as I went to log on here up popped another notification of this threat, in fact that is two this morning.

I tried to log on last night using my Surface, was just trying to figure out what my password is as normally it gets put in automatically, when a message popped up saying that this was not a safe  site and any passwords would not be protected and seen by others.  Not sure whether it was a Opera warning or Windows Defender.  Never had it before.

Having a bit of a problem loading forum pages here. The problem is spasmodic and has been occurring the last 2-3 days. I don't have this problem with any other websites. I am using an iPad. Just now I encountered a 509 Bad Gateway message. This morning I got a message, too, but didn't pay attention to what it was. When I got the bad gateway message a few minutes ago I thought I should report it. No Internet/router problems here that I am aware of.

Sometimes this occurs when the file type is too large, but it could be another issue. Could you see if reducing the file size makes a difference?

I received an 'internal server error' at my first attempt to log in this morning and a 'bad gateway' when clicking back from a topic.

I can't access 'Stars for Stella' in  Welcome to The Dark Side Current Projects  - http://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,2875.0.html - by any means (ie not by clicking on the topic title, or the last post icon).  I just get a blank, white page.   :'(

It sounds so lovely...  :(

(Waterfox, Windows 10 - I've just discovered that I can see it in Chrome, but not in Firefox.)

No problems with anything else.

This is a funny one! I can see it when I'm NOT logged in, but as soon as I log in it vanishes!

My explanation for this would be: sometimes posts get stuck when they are created due to connection lapses in the database. This means that not all of the data required to show the post makes it into the database, only a half entry makes it in. Sometimes that means it shows as a post on the board list but when you get there, it's corrupted.

I'll try to find a solution for this but as it's a rare occurrence there might not be much that we can do. The best would be to message the post creator and let them know to re-do it.

Hi, I'm new here and just joined a few days ago.  I wanted to report that I had tried to join multiple times over the last six months with no success.  I would get the original email that said I needed to be approved and then never hear back again.  I mentioned it to someone on this board that I know and she said I should try to logon anyway but that didn't work ... I got a message that I didn't exist.  This time around I was finally able to join.  I'm reporting this on the off chance others are having the same issue with joining and the admins weren't aware.

I use Firefox on an iMac if it matters.

A lot of people who experienced the same problem as you had the authentication email stuck in the spam filter.  How where you eventually able to join?
Title: Re: Report an issue here
Post by: mudcat on December 28, 2017, 21:11:34 PM
I had nothing in my spam filters.  In fact the original response email telling me I would need approval always arrived.  Originally I tried several times with different emails and then gave up but tried a couple of times after a month or two.  Finally on a whim I tried again this week and it "took" in that I got a follow-up response.

Interesting, thanks for letting us know. I will see if I can figure this one out but also possibly make admin more easily contactable for non-members so people can raise this sort of issue.
Title: Re: Report an issue here
Post by: Kenora on December 28, 2017, 22:08:14 PM
I think that's a great idea, Francesca. I had exactly the same problem when I applied to join back in July. I got the original automated (presumably) response but then .... nothing. I checked my spam folders ... nothing. I emailed admin and also Iminei several times to see if it made any difference, but no. I also tried logging in but was told my user name didn't exist. Then eventually I tried re-applying a few months later and was accepted within 3 hours.

It was definitely worth persevering though.  :D

Edited to add: Hi Mudcat - glad you persevered too. Nice to see you.  :)

Is there any chance that your mouse is actually double clicking?  They can sometimes work very fast so that it isn't obvious to the clicker.

I've just tried double clicking very quickly on a post that I hadn't previously liked and it gave me that message about having already liked it.
Title: Re: Report an issue here

I'll watch out for that in future, but I think it's unlikely - I have a huge problem double clicking. My finger joints are really stiff and don't move quickly enough.

I'm just going to reiterate what the OP says in regards to reporting something. This really helps us fix things as quickly and easily as possible.

Taking a screenshot is often a 'built in' program.  The trick is finding where it's kept.  In Mac, you use 'Grab' which is buried in 'Utilities'.  If you are using Windows, it will be called something else and kept in a different folder.  However, if you 'search' your computer for 'screen shot', it will point you in the right direction.
Title: Re: Report an issue here
Post by: Acorn on January 31, 2018, 09:22:10 AM
Keyboards quite often have a key that will take a screenshot.  Mine is labelled 'prt sc'.

In Windows 10, if you hold down the windows key (with the little flag divided into 4), the shift key and the letter 's' you will get a cross-shaped cursor which you can drag around the screen to copy the bit you want.

There are lots of ways of doing it, and unfortunately they do vary depending on what computer and what operating system you have.

Video it?!!!! Sorry I wouldn't know where to begin or what with- and you want my glasses? Seriously though, it's only a minor annoyance - it only happens occasionally and I don't want you to spend ages on it. I can live with it. I just thought it might tie in to something else. If I want to tell someone I like something, I'll post it and tell them.

When I logged on this evening I found that any new posts with photos were lacking the usual thumbnail. (Older posts with photos had thumbnails and were fine.) When I clicked on the photo link which usually appears underneath the thumbnail I got an error message. This happens with all new posts made since I logged off 24 hours ago. I'm using a laptop with Win 8 and Chrome. Screenshots attached.

If the browser hasn't retained your password that is more likely to be a browser issue.

Firefox does silent updates so it could be that. Alternatively, it could be that the address changed to https:// and therefore your cookie was no longer set. Most browsers aren't fussy about the difference between http and https but older browsers possibly may be.

Hi - I’m working on my iPad  (ha, well, lounging in bed on a bank holiday Monday with said iPad.... ;) ) I wrote a reply to a post in The Show Must Go On called “Mock up or muck up  -<“, but when i went to preview and post, it said I needed a title even though it had already autofilled the thread title. I deleted the emoji and it worked fine. Looking at the thread I see most people used the full title with emoji but one other person hadn’t, so maybe this isn’t just me but some issue with emojis in titles and mobile devices. Thanks (and thanks for all your hard work on the site!) xx

added ps - the exact same thing happened just now on my Mac with Safari, so maybe it's a Safari thing not an iPad thing per se. Once I deleted the emoji, it was happy to let me post.

Err, I'm not sure about the origin of the emoji - it's this thread. But, yes that could be -- and/or maybe also a Safari issue as most people seem to be OK with it, but I'm clearly not the only one who isn't.  https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,3900.msg57797/boardseen.html#new

Massive display of images (most but not all) when embedded in posts.  They display so large and exceed the width of the post (and screen size) so it's usually impossible to view them.
The result is scrolling, scrolling, scrolling and (yawn) even more scrolling to get past the images to read the posts.
If I particularly want to see what's on one of these images, I right click and display the image on a separate tab. Most of the time I don't bother.

I realise it's an image sizing and software controls issue, but I wonder if anything can be done bearing in mind people do seem to prefer to embed images in the post.

Using a laptop or desktop and the look and layout setting is Core Theme

Can you provide an example of one that exceeds the screen width? The CSS is designed to constrain them within the post width.

Edit: I have just realised you are on "core theme" as you stated. Sorry I missed that. We use Reseller theme, but when we started the forum we allowed users to choose another theme if they wanted, however they would be unsupported. If you are not on Reseller theme (it will say Reseller at the bottom in the footer), then please can I request you switch over. Unfortunately we don't have the time to dedicate to supporting multiple themes.

Fran, good to know the explanation for the over-sized photos.  I've had that problem too and I use the Curve theme because to me the reseller theme takes up too much screen space.  Anyway, at least I can switch temporarily for viewing photos if I need to.  Not all photos do this and it could be that it's only an issue if a width isn't specified.

Thanks for the response and explanation Fran.  I understand the situation.l
I find Core and some other themes offer a more compact and simpler layout.

Not an issue, more of a request  :)
Is it possible to show the date a thread was started when you view them, in for example, Unread Topics?  It's difficult to know, especially with the birthdays, if it's a new topic or an old one.
Title: Re: Report an issue here
Post by: UttaRetch on July 08, 2018, 19:15:27 PM
I don't really understand your query @Bodgeitandscarper.  All responses to a thread are date and time stamped.  I have set my view the first thread at the top, but I think the default view is the reverse.
Title: Re: Report an issue here
Post by: Pearl on July 08, 2018, 19:22:47 PM
I think Bodgeit means on the Unread Topics page, you can't see the date the thread was started before you open it.  I could include the day or the date in the birthday thread title if that helps.
Title: Re: Report an issue here
Post by: Bodgeitandscarper on July 08, 2018, 19:25:40 PM
Yes they are indeed, but it's when you click on "Unread Topics" and get a list of topics they show the title and who started them, but not the date they were started, as in the pic below.  Sorry, I maybe didn't make it very clear.

It might be the emoji issue which is a well known bug in SMF. It causes havoc when you use emojis on your device rather than our emoticons, but only when you want to edit.

Hi Techs,
I have been sent PMs and they didn't arrive.
I have since made contact with the forum member again and everything seems to be working ok but I wondered if there was an intermittent problem or are we the only two having diffs.

Could the sender let us know whether they appear in their sent folder.

Also, if you (or the sender) can let us know exactly when they were sent we can check the error logs - rough time and date please.

Oh, and we need to know who the sender is in order to look for them in the error log!

Can you let us know when the messages were sent?

Good morning. Many of the messages were sent on Sunday, throughout the day, and were direct replies to @wrenkins PMs, not newly composed ones. They don't appear in my sent items as I didn't tick the keep copy option.

If it helps, the messages contained details of postage rates.

Things seem to be working now, but there's no way for us to be 100% certain.

I tried accessing the site late this afternoon but I'm getting a black screen which looks like the old DOS layout. I've tried taking a screenshot but I can't get it to paste into the forum.

I'm using Google Chrome on a Win 10 setup. The weird thing is I can access the site perfectly normally via MS Edge (which is how I'm typing this). I've tried restarting my laptop and deleting my cache. Can anybody else think of anything which may help, please?
Title: Re: Report an issue here

It's fine for me on Chrome/Win 10, and Firefox/Win 10.

I briefly saw the candles earlier, then (while logged out) it reverted to the fireworks... both of which reminded me that we are just about at TSP's fifth anniversary!!   ;)

@Acorn - thanks. I've just realised I can try it on Chrome Win 10 through DH's laptop, so I'll do that after dinner. If it works on there then it'll be my laptop that's at fault but I have no idea how to correct it.

I would hazard a guess that @Mr Twingo has been testing headers...

Yes, I was testing banners, but not on the standard forum theme. Nobody should have seen them unless they had changed their profile settings.

@Acorn is correct – TSP's birthday is just a few days away, so watch out for the celebratory banner (which may not be candles).
Title: Re: Report an issue here
Post by: Kenora on February 27, 2022, 21:02:01 PM
I've tried getting into the forum on DH's laptop using Chrome browser - and it's fine. However, on my laptop I'm still getting a black screen with white writing, with all the graphics in weird places.

I know it's nothing to do with the forum but please does anyone have any ideas how I might correct this? I've tried clearing the cache, re-starting the laptop, shutting down & leaving then re-starting. The only other thing I can think of is re-installing Chrome.

I'm sorry to be a pest but it's really annoying having to go from one browser to another, and I hate using Edge as well.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

It probably means there's a setting gone awry.

If you're on a Windows machine, press CRTL together with 0 (zero). On Mac, cmd with 0. That might help.

I'm sure there's a setting gone awry - as you suggested - but I have no idea what it is.

The search function doesn't seem to be working @Mr Twingo @Iminei

Edited to add that it seems to work for some words, with no rhyme nor reason.  Mystery gets a blank page (completely blank, not a no-result page), but mostery is fine (I do know it's not a word, I just wanted something as similar as possible to mystery!)

Weird... if it's a technical issue it's a very weird one!

I searched earlier for the disappearing 9 patch tut and it worked fine however when I click on a thumbnail instead of the pic coming up in the post it takes you to a black page with the pic front and centre ... you have to click the back arrow to return to the post ... and for some reason I dont like that.

OK, if you're having page loading issues, I am going to need more details to help me figure out what's going on.

Please provide me with:

• The address of the page/post/thread you are attempting to view
• The device + operating system you are using
• Which browser you are using (and the version, if you know)
• Any trouble-shooting you have already tried
• If possible, a screenshot of what you see

Thank you.

I cannot get the green 'login' button to work, to log into the forum. I managed to log in through the black bar at the top. Neither can I access the messages, even though hovering over that button on the black bar, suggests that I should be able to do this. I received a message yesterday  - that was also sent to my email, so I had to reply through my email address; I could see the original message then, but the reply function on the 'actions' button for the message would not work. It is still not working this evening, and I had to reply to a message via my email for a second time.
Not sure who to ask about this @Mr Twingo ?

I can scroll down & access the boards as usual though the fonts have reverted to a serif type which I find hard on the eyes. I'm running the latest Chrome on Pixel 4a. I've tried logging out of TSP & back in with password. Tried clearing cache & freeing up memory by deleting around 10 Gb worth. Tried shutting down & restarting phone. Hm. I'm using Firefox without issue. I've tested using Google Chrome, and again had no problems. But that's no help to you.

@Lachica the screenshot you have posted show what often happens when the connection is slow or the browser can't properly interpret the code that formats the website. So it defaults to the basic HTML.

I have an issue using this site with my phone, a Samsung A20e (Android 11) on Chrome.

The 3 white bars at the top-right of the forum cannot be pressed. The green button that is above posts that says "Actions" and the edit button (pencil and paper') cannot be pressed either.

Everything else seems to work. I havn't been able to find PM's or Search though, so not sure if thats because of my issue, or I just can't find them.

Edit - I've tried it with Edge browser and I dont get the main menu button at all, but can use the other 'buttons".
I also sent a PM to Iminei earlier and although it said "message sent successfully" (or something) I have no messages in my 'sent' list, so not sure of it was recieved.
Cheers

@Adey1981 For the missing sent messages, you might need to make sure this option is selected (I’m not sure if the default setting is on or off).

Click on the “Profile” option and then under the options on the left side, select “Personal Messaging”.
There are various options you can alter, but to keep a copy of sent messages, you need to make sure that the “ Save a copy of each personal message in my sent items by default.” option is ticked.

If you can’t find anything let me know and I’ll include screenshots. If you want to test the setting, feel free to send me a test message.

But for "unread messages" I can't see the "mark all messages as read" option. Am I going mad? Perhaps someone else can spot it in the attachment.
GG

The migration has resolved both issues. Thank you.

Dear @Mr Twingo , TSP is fine on my Android phone and MacBook but still stuck in maintenance mode on my Android tablet. I've turned it offanonagain then cleared all history but neither has worked. Tried googling website instead of using bookmark, still no joy. Any idea what else I could do, please?

Try clearing the cache, as clearing history alone won't be enough.

Which browser do you use on the tablet?

Well, it's google but not sure if chrome or not. When I tried to find out how to clear the cache, all I could find was instructions for clearing history on chrome and it didn't tie in with what I saw on my screen.

If I go to clear history in my chrome menu, it has a link to clear browsing data, @Flobear. That should be what you need and, if it's being kind, it will allow you to be selective about it.

It appears that my tablet uses the Samsung browser so I will have to investigate that further. I did get the site back by refreshing the page but it looks quite peculiar, as if the printer is short of one colour of ink!

I had a very similar thing on my Samsung tablet about 2-3 weeks ago @Flobear. I got what sounds like the 'peculiar' look that you have. I switched it off and on like you did, no change and the same happened the next evening. I then went to 'settings' and the 'storage' and 'optimised' that. I turned it off again and the next day all was back to normal. I only tend to use it in the evenings if I'm not interested in the TV and I wasn't feeling well at the time so didn't fiddle too much. The only thing I can say is perhaps whatever I did wasn't effective immediately. It's been okay since though.

I'm not sure if I use the Samsung browser or Chrome, I have a feeling both are installed.

Thanks, @Helen M, I'll give that a try.
I found out what browser it was by typing in something like 'whatsmybrowser.com' !

Something odd has happened to the way TSP appears on my screen (Chrome), all the part where the posters are normally showing either a photo of something has now gone red, the only posters that are different are those  that never had a photo in.  Also when I go to put TSP on hold using the  Restore Down button, again the top of this is also red, has something happened to do this?

@Mr Twingo ?

Nothing at all has changed here in the TSP Plant Room.

A couple of things to check:

1. Does it happen if you open an 'Incognito' window? (At the top right, click More (three vertical dots) and then New incognito window.)
2. Does it occur in other browsers on your device?

I suspect one of two causes: either a slow connection or a faulty browser cache. The first may be resolved by restering your internet connection; the second by clearing Chrome's browsing cache (In Chrome, at the top right, click More / More tools / Clear browsing data… delete only Cached images and files.)

Well I tried doing all you suggested Mr. Twingo but it remained the same, and even today it was still like it was when I first mentioned this, however this evening there has been a change something updated itself on my laptop, took TSP down, and when I logged back in it was all back to normal.  I haven't a clue what happened, but I am glad it is back to normal.  Thanks for trying to help though.

If you are posting via an intermediary service ie Google pics it could be to do with your ... or their ... settings.
Happens to me all the time. The best way is to post directly from a file on your computer/lappy ...

Cant advise on phones. @Mr Twingo

I’ve discovered that I can’t use this site on my laptop, which runs Malwarebytes. The software blocks the site because it thinks it’s “compromised”, and an “otherwise legitimate site that is being used by hackers without the owner’s knowledge”.

I can use it fine on my iPad, which doesn’t have (or need) anti-virus protection. Thought I’d give you a head’s up to check the site, and if all is well perhaps request Malwarebytes unblocks it?

You can tell Malwarebytes to ignore it @SeamBean and add to your 'approved' list. It should automatically ask you what you want to do.

Yes, I’m aware of this but don’t like to do it unless I’m sure the website isn’t actually being used by malicious actors. I worked in tech support for a long time and I’ve seen far too much data lost because someone merrily added exceptions to their antivirus without doing due diligence!

I would suspect it’s some kind of plug in or similar being used on the site that’s erroneously flagging as malicious, or possibly something that’s out of date. I mostly use the site on my tablet anyway but I wanted the site owners to be aware so they could have a check of their server.

If it were the site, I would have expected everybody here with Malwarebytes installed to receive the same warning. So I suspect something else is at play.

The code for TSP is all PHP. We are using a previous version of PHP, though.

What happens if you try accessing the site in incognito/private mode?

@Mr Twingo - trying to post a picture on the "Show us yer baubles" thread. Keeps coming up with an Error 500 message. Have managed it on another thread but this one's not having it.

@Greybird I found (but only recently, it used to work) that if I resize pics on my phone, then try to upload them, I get that message.  I've had to go back to emailing them to myself, then re-sizing them in Pixlr on the laptop.  I do wonder if it's a recent update to the photo editing software on my Samsung phone.

@Bodgeitandscarper I only know how to do this with my ordinary Fuji camera. I have no idea how to get photos out of a phone! I did manage to make sure the pictures in the camera weren't too big. I have managed to post 4 photos in my diary thread this afternoon - it was just this one that didn't like it.

I'll take a look. 50x errors usually mean something's not right on the server side of things, most likely permissions...

Just had a warning come up when I tried to post a new thread with a picture.  It says the certificate for TSF has expired.  I'm sure it was just a glitch and posted anyway, but thought I should report it.

The webhost will have to update the certificate - Mr Twingo might be able to do it directly, but I suspect he is at work.

I need to pick your brains please Mr Twingo because I'm quite perplexed.

I cannot post here using my household wifi on my phone (latest android). My last successful attempt at this was in the today thread, last Thursday , 10th, around 9am. Something to do with pollen.

I can, however, navigate and like.

I can post on other forums.

I can post using my phone using mobile data and also using my parents' wifi.

I can post, using my own Wi-Fi, using my ipad or chrome on my windows laptop.

I've done all the cookies/data spring cleaning required, I've toggled between dns settings and back again because Pixels have issues with that, occasionally.

The last thing thst I can think of is trying a different browser on my phone.

Edit: my phone did an update, this morning. I can post with it again!

I’ve also had issues posting from my Chromebook, I’ve done all the usual cleanup stuff. When I press post, it just spins round and round and then comes up with an error code (I’ll post that later on as I’m just off to work). All other websites work, just TSP I’m having issues with.

@Mr Twingo I'm getting the same error code as @Ouryve

Request Timeout
Server timeout waiting for the HTTP request from the client.

Additionally, a 408 Request Timeout error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

It seems the problems were caused by overnight maintenance by our TSO, out web host. The work should have finished by 5 o'clock this morning, but obviously there was something still going on.

I don’t know if it’s just me @Mr Twingo , but I twice tried to put up a post this morning on the Wednesday sewing club thread ( with a photo) and when I clicked ‘post’ I just got a blank page and no post was put up. Everything seemed as normal until that point. I don’t want to try again in case I end up with 3 posts all the same.

PS Interestingly this one worked  ::thinks::
