Yes I know what you mean @Bodgeitandscarper though I think the Marcy Tilton top is nice. However, like me, you probably have a zillion Marcy Tilton patterns. I like the Rachel Comey dress as it has  interesting details and is definitely wearable without having a huge neck or flesh displayed or the like . It is the exact same as the actual designer version even down to the fabric so that intrigued me. The fancy party dresses are lovely if you have the occasion and the figure and £6.62 is a bargain for a pattern of that complexity.

If you look on the main US Simplicity website you will see that the brand new Vogue patterns are $7.99 (about £6.66) each for the next couple of days. This includes pdf versions. They now have A0 as well as A4 on the pdfs. As usual with Vogues it helps if you are young, thin and going to a party - alas I am none of these  - but there are some nice patterns. I've indulged in a Rachel Comey and a Marcy Tilton. If one of you would like to invite me to a wedding I'm happy to have a go at the Badgley Mischka pattern.

The only one that isn't on sale is the Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress. Is it just me? I can't for the life of me see what the excitement is with this pattern. And the new Buttericks are now up on the website but they aren't on sale.

Ah I see @Acorn . Sounds like experimenting is needed!

I used a sleep mask if I wake in the night  and it's getting light @Acorn . If there's too much light outside because I'm staying somewhere which has thin curtains and bright light outside I'll wear a mask all night. It's quite effective and you soon get used to it.

Wow amazing @BrendaP and @Sheilago  <3

Fun with Fabric / Re: WBL Batik query

Glad it washed ok! Looks like it might be an African wax type fabric (hence the waxy feel and sticky label) rather than a Bali style batik. I guess they are cautious with cleaning instructions but it's sometimes surprising what leaks dye.

Yes I'm here! I'm sewing Vogue 1274 which is a Lynn Mizono asymmetric top with hanky hems. Just attaching the neck and front facings over a mandarin collar. Having to redo a few bits of stitching round the neck where I'm catching in the main fabric a bit. I'll get there.

Put like that @Ouryve it does sound illogical but I'm sure your foxes will be lovely!

I love Marilla Walker patterns but she is moving onto new things and will close her Etsy shop at the end of March. She has a sale and you can get pdfs of her patterns really cheaply for the next few days. I paid £4.28 per pattern just now. Contrast that with the £15+ you can pay elsewhere for a pdf of a much less well designed pattern!! I particularly recommend the Belemnite dress, Anning dress and her coat patterns. Worth checking out as these are really good patterns which are well designed and come with bonus sleeves and the like (unlike other pattern companies which charge you for theextra bits).

It's sad to see such a talented designer move on but it must be very difficult for lone pattern designers - we all have to pay the rent and put food on the table

Fun with Fabric / Re: Where are you all buying your fabric?
« on: March 13, 2024, 16:44:21 PM »
Snap - well almost snap @Lachica . I bought two lengths of linen-viscose prints from Pound fabrics  (rainforest and spring garden) and they are gorjus. I think they are fine for shirts @Acorn  - a reasonably sturdy shirt - not a lawn weight. The 55%linen/45% viscose are a slightly heavier weight but some of the prints are 20% linen/80% viscose and are a lighter weight if you prefer that as @Lachica suggests.

Also consider their cotton/viscose lawns - just scroll down the new fabrics page a bit. They have two abstract blobby prints and three flowery fabrics. These are super - they  are lightweight and with a slubby finish which makes them look like a fine linen. They are an absolute bargain at £3.50 pm IMHO! It's interesting - you never used to see cotton and viscose combined in a fabric but now it pops up all the time and seems to work well.

Machine Accessories / Re: Scissors
« on: March 13, 2024, 12:53:37 PM »
Yes we are all fainting at @Lowena 's scissor confessions! Many years ago DH borrowed my fabric scissors to cut wallpaper so I immediately gave him said scissors and bought a new pair. He knows he isn't allowed to touch my fabric scissors now. I have a pair of 40+ year old Sheffield scissors - after about 30 years I got them sharpened by a guy in Leeds market so I'll be back in for a sharpening in another 20 years or so. I have a couple of other pairs of sewing shears but none I love as much as the old Sheffield ones. I have a couple of pairs of those little 'stork' embroidery scissors - I like them too.

Sewing Machines / Re: Help please for this singer!
« on: March 06, 2024, 22:51:46 PM »
I have a Singer Brilliance - probably their simplest electronic machine - and it's absolutely fine. It is my back up machine though and I don't use it much. Like @HenriettaMaria I really don't like the front loading bobbin though .As well as having to take the 'tools box' bit off to get at the bobbin I can't see when the bobbin is about to run out. I didn't realise this when I bought this machine somewhat hastily at a bargain price. If I had to buy a new main machine a top loading bobbin would be a deal breaker for me.

I have bits for a peg bag. Perhaps this will spur me on to make it at last.

I've had some lovely stuff from SLF @Ohsewsimple . Their prices are good anyway but a sale makes them irresistible. Oh and they are really quick. If you order at the weekend your parcel will probably arrive on Tuesday. Happy be an enabler once again!

On until midnight Tuesday 5th March. Lots of bargains. Details here
