In the wardrobe / Re: Singer 99k stitch length regulator faulty

I had this problem on a vintage Singer Featherweight 221.[/size]Although the Stitch-length Lever travelled fully up and down (short stitches through to long stitches) the effect on the stitches actually sewn was minimal, and the stitches remained at around 22 stitches per inch.
The problem was the Y-shaped yoke & linkages inside - behind the Stitch-length-lever.

I have exactly this problem on a white FW.  I took it to the local (USA) repair person.  It worked for about 30 minutes and now I have the same issue again.  Thanks for your information - will check that out although the machine was allegedly "fully serviced and repaired".  The shop no longer exists and there may be a reason for that...  :headbang:

If you can make 4 more blocks, you could center the doggie, which would make him the star of the quilt?  He deserves the attention if he's the family pet.  :woof:

@Iminei      Obviously my explanation was clear as mud!  There's a reason they say one picture is worth a thousand words and if I ever find a youtube video that shows it better, I'll post it.

@LeilaMay - thanks for that.  The FW shop is a great resource and I've ordered various bits from them before.  They are located about 2500 miles from me, so I would have to ship the machine.  I'd like to solve this one with someone more local if possible.  Repairman #2 comes highly recommended by people who have used his services, so I'm hopeful.
Yes, I saw the mention, but I hadn't watched the whole Andy video yet, so I missed his feed dog demonstration.  On my machine, I think there must be something in the link between the stitch regulator and the feed dogs that isn't holding, but it's nothing visible to me.  Might be hidden in the depths of the column?   :headbang:   Wish I could ask repairman #1 what he thought it was, but the shop is gone.  Will be looking forward to seeing the solution to @b15erk 's issue.  It might give me a new clue.

@toileandtrouble - I understood just what you meant.  By the time I finished my post, I was so involved I forgot that you had already said it!     Sigh...  Sorry for the repetition.

HERE is a video that demonstrates different types of layouts.  The layout @Arloony is describing comes at the very end of the video.  If the fabric has nap or a design that has an obvious right-side-up vs upside-down print, that top piece should be rotated 180 degrees and then put back down on the one underneath.  That will keep the nap/design running in the same direction on both pieces.

You can try this with a piece of paper to see how it works.  Draw a smile face near the top of the paper and another near the bottom of the paper.  :)  Fold the paper in half so the fold is between the 2 faces you drew.  Cut along the fold.  Peek under the top piece and you will see that the smile is upside down.  Turning the top paper 180 degrees will cause both smile faces to be right side up when you put them together again.  If this were a printed fabric, you could now cut out your pattern with both the smiles going in the same direction.  If you had cut without turning the top piece of fabric, half of your pants would have the smiles upside down.

Hope this doesn't make it more confusing!

@Lace - Thank you for the idea, but I'm in the US.  I do have the name of another repairman here and am hopeful he'll figure it out.  #1 was a son-in-law of the great guy who did this work for years.

@b15erk - I believe there are just a couple of screws holding the feed dogs in place.  If one became loosened somehow, it might be enough to throw off the movement.  On the other hand, there is timing involved in the feed dogs as well as the needle/bobbin interface.  I wouldn't mess with that myself.  How frustrating!  Hope you find someone who can help.

Good luck with it  :)   I have a white FW that's given me fits because it won't hold a stitch length and insists on doing the smallest possible stitch.  Repairman #1 was unsuccessful in solving it for more than the length of 1 seam and has since retired.  Looking for repairman #2...

One thing to consider - the feed dog movement is controlled by the stitch length regulator.  Fewer stitches per inch means they move a longer distance and vice versa.  Video.  Is there any possible clue here?

I have a white Featherweight and use one of these.  I'm in the US, but maybe the same type is available on your side of the pond?

That's a great idea.  Once you know the alteration/s you need, it all gets easier.  Best of luck with it!

@Vezelay ,
I think I misunderstood what you're trying to do.  Are you saying it feels as though you can't lift your arm without the sleeve binding?  If so, this video might be helpful.
This Threads article talks about armscye fitting in general and may give you some possible starting points for figuring out where to begin other adjustments.  Getting a good fit is worth the time and effort and draping is much easier with a helper.  Once you have the right shape, it can be used to adjust other patterns.
I hope this better addresses what you were asking :)
