Title: Purse zip
Post by: Diane on November 11, 2021, 14:26:37 PM
Can anyone tell me what type of zip i would need if i was making a purse? Is it an open ended one or a closed one?

What type of purse are you planning to make, I've made cloth purses and pencil cases for children and I used continuous zipping on them as it avoids faffing around the ends of ordinary zips and gives a better finish.

@So Chic   This is what i was thinking of making but i can't make out what type of zip is being used.

I've never heard of a continuous zip, just looked on Amazon  :faints:

You won’t need an open ended one for a purse.

If you are just getting a single zip buy one at least a couple of inches longer than you need, it makes construction so much easier.

It's a nice small project to do at the table and my lounge won't look like a fabric bomb has gone off

Diane, I’ve had a quick look at the video and think you could use a continuous zip or a longer zip las suggested by Ellabella.

Most habby suppliers sell continuous zips, I first used them for making zipped cushion covers.

I know it’s a bigger initial outlay but a length of continuous zipper can end up being much more economical than individual zips

In addition to the continuous zip you bought, if you're going to make other purses/pouches/bags you might like some of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01MQVG4K3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&th=1. I love to use co-ordinating or contrasting coloured zips and a bunch of these will do you for years. You're almost always fine with a longer size than specified in a patten - mine are 16" and decent quality.

@Vezelay Can you just trim them if they are too long?

@Diane   Yes, zips can be shortened at either end, I just make sure that the engine cannot be pulled off by stitching over the teeth.  I think I saw a YouTube video showing how to do it.

@So Chic Thanks for that, i'm going to order a pack of 16" in various colours and then i can trim to suit

They other thing i need is some fusible interfacing, the one in the video is woven but does anyone have any recommendations, i need it for the purse so it needs some rigidity (i think)

As @So Chic says. I find there's usually no need to trim until after you've sewn the zip in - but yes, always make sure you sewn over the teeth before trimming.

Just buy a metre of any fusible (ie iron-on) woven interfacing - most sewing suppliers sell it. You're bound to need it again. It's supposed to be cut in the same direction as the fabric but for smallish bags and purses I don't find that matters. If you already have a light/medium weight non-woven interfacing that would probably do, but woven is nicer if you have the choice.

@Vezelay Would the woven give it a bit of stiffness, looks quite soft

Yes, it's surprising I know but it seems to add just the right amount. Unless the pattern specifies something much firmer woven is usually your best bet. You'll have to try these things out for yourself in the end. But generally too soft is preferable to too stiff I find.

I've just ordered some woven, it will get used for other things as well, thanks
