I'm in (I think)

I've had the fabric out for ages, hanging on the back of a chair.  Just need to match it up with a pattern now...

I have a short break coming up in April in Cornwall, so I want something I can wear in a restaurant - just in case we get a heatwave!

Whats the most suitable fabric for making summer dresses? I'm looking for something that will hang really nicely and isn't clingy and is cool.

@Diane I think viscose drapes nicely and it quite cool to wear but I find it a bit difficult to sew.

@Diane I’m a fan of viscose too.  But I wouldn’t recommend it for beginners.   Liberty cotton lawn is beautiful to work with, hangs nicely, lovely to wear.  It is pricey but …….

Ooh thanks @Flobear, I am thinking of some shorts. I don't really have the legs for them, but make ones which come just below the knee (where I'd have a dress finish) I think a khaki/taupe pair would be boring but very useful. I have just the fabric....

@Diane there's nothing like Liberty lawn as @Ohsewsimple says but because it is quite expensive you might want to practise on a cheaper cotton fabric. For instance , if you look for jjtextilesmanchester on eBay you will find some nice cotton at good prices.

I should enter this challenge. I'll need to swap the overlocker thread to white for summer!

Thanks for the advice @Tamnymore @Ohsewsimple I'll have a look on ebay for that seller and see what they have. I might have some viscose upstairs, i'll check later, i gather it's a bit slippery to sew? Is it the kind of fabric that you would baste first? Is cotton lawn a bit see through or am i thinking of something else?

Another vote for lawn here - there is plenty around that isn't as expensive as Liberty, and some of it is nearly as nice!

Cotton lawn isn't usually see through, although possible some colours would be if you were standing against the light...

Viscose wriggles when it's under the machine foot.  It tries to pull or slip away and it stretches easily on any line that isn't straight grain.  It is nice to wear, though, and lovely to iron.

Actually when I looked I didn't see as much cotton in that seller's eBay list as I thought but there is plenty of reasonably priced cotton around @Diane.

There was some lovely cotton when I looked last night, @Tamnymore , but it seems to have sold overnight.

I’d like to join in but don’t think I could make a garment in a month of Sundays.

@Pearl it wasn't me buying all the cotton honest! You darksiders who do all that detailed measuring and matching and sewing in straight lines could easily manage a lovely garment!
@Iminei in my student years, several centuries ago, I did a lot of garment sewing but I did not possess an iron so my creations must have looked a fright.

@Iminei My brain went the same way about iron  :o
I used viscose, but never again as it needs ironing every time you wash it
I find cotton is easy to sew, lovely to press and doesn't need to be ironed if you hang it straight up from the washing machine or tumble dryer  :D
I am pondering a summer dress, but not sure it fits in with everyone else's thoughts on a summer dress, but it would be a me summer dress lol
I have a pattern I was going to tweak but not sure it will get done by the end of March.  We shall see  :thumb:

@Diane I’d go for cotton lawn and leave the viscose alone for the moment.  I’d hate for you to waste fabric.  I’ve seen several people get in a mess with viscose as they don’t  know how to handle it.

I'm cheering from the sidelines as I could never attempt to make anything to be seen worn. I just wouldn't have the patience, let alone the skill. Words like "grain" "interfacing" and " pattern weights" might as well be in Swahili.
Good luck to you all....... :grouphug:
P.S. I'm glad I'm a stock, ready to wear size  ;)
P.P.S. I iron everything, including towels, knickers and socks  :P

Don't go for anything that is too lightweight @Diane, does the pattern give fabric suggestions? Cotton lawn is very lightweight and I'd say it would need to be lined, the main part of the dress that is.

@Helen M I have a small amount of cotton lawn upstairs and it's quite thin and i think your right that it would probably need to be lined  :scream: I'm tempted to go with some viscose as it's much cheaper than the pricey lawn, it's only for me to wear in the garden so i don't need expensive fabric.....i'm cheap  The pattern suggests, challis, linen, broadcloth, crepe de chine  :S

@Diane , I'm very wary of viscose, I have had such variable results from complete failure to success. It is a beast to cut out and can fray like mad.

I may well enter as I have some chambray to make a sundress/pinafore from.

@Starryfish I just wish i had a decent fabric shop near me but i don't. I have some navy viscose in my stash, not sure how much but if i used this and bodged it then it wouldn't matter too much, i'll have a search in abit and see if i can find it.

................................................................................
Just found it but there's not enough for a dress but would be for a top. I might look for a top pattern then i can try out the viscose on the sewing machine. This way i won't be wasting any money if i can't tackle sewing it.

@Diane , there isn't a decent fabric shop for dressmaking nearer than London for me. I have to shop online and at shows. Results can be variable to say the least. It's not always the most expensive that gives good results. I have decided with future viscose projects to use 5/8th seams, instead of the 3/8th that is common with my favourite indie designers (Style Arc especially).

Also I usually cut out on the spare bedroom floor and this is difficult with slithery viscose. I will woman up and clear off the dining table for it next time.

Ooh! I'm actually going to enter the competition this month! My first one! I am having an early "summer" holiday at the end of March to Gran Canaria and am already drawing up a pattern for a bikini! I am not a regular fit for most swimwear, a very long back, so I am using an existing bikini which doesn't fit especially well as a template and trialling it in some cheap fabric I have in my stash.

I have bought the material already, a rather  lairy pink leopard print (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0981BJCHS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1).

If I have time I plan to make a sarong to go with it as well, we'll have to see.

@Diane Have you tried Rainbow fabrics? They sell deadstock fabrics and have a lot of viscose. They price by the metre which is unusual these days and are quite cheap. Watch out that the description doesn't include poly as well as viscose. unless you don't mind that of course.

I am hoping to join in by making a summer's doll outfit. I have the pattern and the fabric ready to lay out today and then set aside as I need to set up my Juki and clean up a bit. I also need to starch and press the fabric for Xmas placemats. They are gifts for friends.

I am looking forward to doing something summery as we had about 6" of snow fall yesterday and last night. It is also cold out there. I'm ready for summer.

I'm thinking of joining in by making a pair of culottes. I just need to rootle in the stash to see what fabric I have and then adapt the pattern I have. I made it years ago (think about 30!!!  :o) but since then I have expanded the pattern has shrunk.
I usually wear jeans shorts in the summer - just my normal everyday jeans cut off at the knee - but last summer I had a hankering for something a bit different. Hopefully they will look like a skirt but not be. Have to think about adding pockets as well.
I also would like a shirt waist dress. I love shirtwaist dresses. However, I rarely wear dresses......
I've got until Tuesday to decide!!

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  Last summer I made 6 prs of cullottes, in 3 different lengths for DD and myself from  McCalls 7131. It's got pocketsies  and elastic back waist. I used viscose for most of them but one pr in a lovely soft chambray that had been marinating for many years in my stash. I can attest to an easy make and forgiving fit  0_0

Edited to add : after the first pr for DD I inserted a concealed zip into the LH side seam as she's a size 10 with a size 6 waist

DD wants a pair of skorts/scooter skirt out of it.  Have to find some knit for the short part.  Pattern?  Who knows.  She isn't a standard size, I'll probably have to draft it for her.

All I got today for this contest.

I would have had it finished today but for 2 reasons: 1) I actually had a client come on time with one more suit jacket then he intended to and 2) my kid's mom does alterations and therefore everything has to be just so. :\

The skirt needed to be taken in, which I knew...but it had to be taken in 4 times before I said, look, it's not going to be skin tight.  Stahp.  Now I have to hem it, and I don't like it.

Pressed and ready to go but my client came and I was like, yup.  Done for today.

Your User Name and Entry Number  -Kwaaked
What is it and for whom? Skirt for my daughter
Fabric and Pattern/instructions used  - self-drafted, altered to an inch of its life.  100% cotton Waverly home dec lightweight fabric I got at the charity shop.
A short description on how you made it  - It is as basic as it goes.  2 rectangles, a waistband, partially elasticized.  Slightly big on her at the moment because she is complaining of everything hurting and she's due for a growth spurt.  This has been altered 4 times...she wanted a tight skirt, I said no.  Flat front to reduce the gathers.  I hate it (like I do most of my sewing), she likes it.  As she says, "It makes my butt look thicc!"

Looking at the predictions for summer.  Very mini mini or maxi, cutouts (too cold even in summer up here).  White on white/cream, neons.   Gladiator sandals, biker jackets.... Underwear as outerwear.   I think I will go with what I have in the stash, fabric and patterns.
Of course I could frighten everyone as an OAP in a very mini neon skirt and a full sleeved top with cutouts and a biker jacket in a different sort of fabric  - did I see fluid metallics as well?  Forgot to put in 'the' colour of the year -  Periwinkle blue with  purplish undertones...

Lovely skirt @Kwaaked . Very attractive fabric.
Hmm @toileandtrouble I do have some DM gladiator sandals and they're blue. However as it's 1°C out there I won't have to look them out just yet.
I've now cut out my Marcy Tilton dress and T shirt to wear underneath both in stretchy jersey - dress in a flowery leafy fabric from Rainbow Fabrics and the spotty .jersey from Fabworks I think. The spotty fabric isn't all that stretchy so I cut a size larger just in case. As the Tilton dress has 18 separate pieces all cut out in a single layer the cutting out is a significant challenge in itself.  :S Onwards and upwards!

I love biker jackets, I have a 'real' leather one, a suede khaki one, a blue tartan and brown leather one, a pink leather one and a black fake crocodile skin one.  Does that mean I need a periwinkle blue one?  I was looking for a purple one next if I am honest  :thumb:

I need to be working quick on this one, I have a deadline of before the end of the month! I'm flying out on holiday on the 28th and fully intend to take the bikini with me! The bottoms are mostly done, just some detailing to do and the top just needs putting together and the halter neck straps doing. Not sure about the sarong yet, might need to add some detail. It looks too plain.

Well, that didn't go to plan. The bikini top I just constructed looked great but unfortunately due to the type of cups I used, oval rather than triangle, as soon as I put my arms above my head, pop! Out the girls came! Definitely not something I can wear by the pool!

New triangle cups on order.

I’ve sorted a pattern for a shirt for DH.  Checked out my old ones and decided one might be a bit small and thought we needed a more up to date shaped sleeve as well.  So new one purchased.  Now for fabric!

Oh dear. I'm not loving what I'm making. The neckline is just toooo wide. I don't like to abandon a project but the UFO box is beckoning for this one.

Oh no @Tamnymore.  So many patterns are too wide for me at the neck.  If I buy one I have to check before doing anything else.
Can you adapt it somehow ?   I’ve been known to add a band all the way round before to put it right.

Thanks for the suggestion @Ohsewsimple I can reduce the neck size a bit at the shoulders. Then there's a complex neck facing - complex because it's Marcy Tilton. Might try reducing the neck and adding the facing and then decide. It doesn't help that I have a very stretchy fabric. The under tee shirt also had an enormous neck and I used a much less stretchy fabric. I think there's a drafting problem with this pattern and I'd be interested to see reviews when they start appearing online.

Oh gosh, I've made a few Marcy tilton patterns and wouldn't like to have to adapt any of them! They are rather complex aren't they.

Some Marcy Tilton patterns are really good but others are what Manuela used to call 'over engineered.' I think this is one of the latter!

I'm going to make some shorts in a stretchy woven fabric left over from making some trousers which I've worn a lot in previous summers.

The fabric was quite a dark slightly greenish khaki but the much washed trousers have lightened to a brown tan colour.
I'm thinking of matching the thread to the faded colour as the old trousers look slightly odd now with green stitching (though probably only me who would ever notice!)

Tan shorts using New Look 6216, shortened to Bermuda length. Will be taking them with me for our April Cornwall caravan holiday and hopefully they will get some wear.
(Will iron them first, but I've dumped a load of stuff on the ironing board at the moment!)

This is a progress report into the dress I intend to enter into the competition. The fabric is a cotton/linen blend from Minerva.  Unfortunately it was cut off grain so I ended up with less than I ordered - should’ve complained really. Anyway had enough to cut out the dress and used a lightweight wide voile instead of the self fabric to line the bodice. First time trying to insert pic in text so here’s hoping….

I think the problem is the url you are using.  When I looked at your post that appears to be empty (by clicking on 'quote' you can see what's actually there) it showed that you were using the correct coding at this end, but the address of the image - https://i.imgur.com/a/AlPMDZ1l.jpg - doesn't seem to work.

I'm not familiar with imgur, but when I tried to link to an image there using the 'share' facility mine didn't work either.  However, when I right clicked on the image in imgur, chose 'open image in new tab' (in Firefox, other browsers will have slightly different wording), then went to the new tab and copied the url from the address bar at the top, putting it inside the img tags (as you were doing), it worked. -<

Starryfish's Entry #1
Style Arc Jane Shirt in lilac stripe linen. I made size 10 with no alterations, Style arc fits me pretty well on top.
There are three sleeve variations , short, 3/4 and long with cuffs. I chose 3/4 which seems spring like.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Sorry about the light, it's washing out the colour. I cut out each piece separately to make sure the stripes were properly aligned. It's a simple shirt with front facings but no back neck facing. They advise you to bind the back seam, which I did. Next time I may draft a back facing, also it is called an overshirt but it isn't particularly long, may lengthen it but then I would have to widen the lower part to accommodate my hips.
Now to await real spring to wear it without a jumper.

Jessie's McCalls 6711 Jacket

This was a free pattern, which I altered a lot, mainly because it was too small - pattern only went up to a 14.  Added 2" length, a little width, a button and buttonhole, and a hanging loop.

Fabric was a linen which my Auntie gave me before she died, although I'm not sure if there is any other content.  Lining was a piece I bought for Theo's Christening and didn't use.

I didn't like the styling of the jacket with the collar up, so I've turned it back to look more conventional.  I also added a binding to the inside of the jacket as it looked very 'beige'.

Thought it might be useful over a dress - if the weather ever warms up!

Having seen @b15erk s entry I might as well give up any hope of winning a TSP patch right now   Very tidy and posh looking ma'am  :D
Anyhoo, I'm officially entering now. My better half took me to Abakhan today to peruse fabrics. The bit I had was a bit short. Walked out with a nice bulk of cream/khaki/linen look sort of heavier weight cotton for the shirt I'm attempting. Plans were traced onto baking paper last night and the fabric bits were finished being chopped this evening. With any luck, I'll get to sewing them together at some point tomorrow and then you can all watch in horror as I unviel it later in the week. If all goes to plan that is. (very rare)

Thanks for the kind words everyone - I don't think you would have been so kind if you heard the bad words that just came out of my mouth.  :scream:

Placket misbehaving - oh, flippin' heck

Blood from a pinprick x2 , right in the placket area - oh, bu***r

For the hour spent making the overlocker behave - what the b****y h**l is going on!  :headbang:

When I eventually took the blouse to the ironing board, after o/locking the sleeves - when I realised that they were in with the ws fabric facing out - **************  :headbang: :boohoo:

Oh no @b15erk totally agree with @Acorn.  It’s time to leave it for the moment.  Come back when you’re feeling refreshed.

Out of interest are you still trying to follow the pattern instructions for the placket?  If you have an easier and preferred method it would be best to use that.

The last time I did a placket - on my tartan shirt - I went completely brain dead and couldn't work out what to do at all. It was most bizarre as I have done loads of them and was using my t&t pattern and method. I had to resort to a You Tube video to sort me out. Not sure what happened with the neurological connections in my brain but they definitely weren't firing on all cylinders that time!!  :S

Working on a summer dress.  It is Butterick 6676 and I am using a cotton print from stash, to try it out.  Not too bothered if it doesn't, I'm not excited by the print, but things I've done that way sometimes work out as favourites.  Pieced the edges of the skirt at the bottom and pleased with the result so far.

I no longer wear summer dresses but when I did I made them in chambray, cotton jersey, and cool wool.  I found cotton lawn a bit flimsy and linen creases too much.  I look forward to seeing everyone’s creations.

Post by: K.H. on March 23, 2022, 18:41:45 PM
Here goes! My first competition entry.

K.H. Entry no 1.

Bikini and wrap for myself.

The fabric is scuba for the bikini bottom inner and polyester/elastane for the outer and soft touch elastic for the waist band.

The top is constructed around a pair of triangle sew in cups with polyester/elastane outer and inner fabric with soft touch elastic for the under bust support. Tie back and halter neck.

No patterns were used, the bottoms were created using another bikini as a guide and then adjusted to fit me better, but the top was all pretty much made up as I went along. The top is the second revision as the first one was made using oval sew in cups which did absolutely nothing to hold things in place. So bad were they that when I put my hands over my head I fell out of the bottom of the cups!

I was having problems with the tension sewing the binding and the elastic on the top so the zigzag is not perfect by any means, but it'll have to do until I get back from holiday. I have enough fabric left to redo it then.

The wrap is just chiffon with a rolled hem.

Sorry for the photos, I was definitely not going to model it! Sorry!  :embarrassed:

Jessie

Probably the best fitting shirt I've ever had and I didn't alter a single thing on the plan
Well...@Ohsewsimple except for the collar. I can't button it
The sleeves are a little 'poofy' on the shoulder tops. I don't think I pulled them in enough. But other than that and a few amateurish stitches here and there, I'm quite pleased with myself  :D
With any luck, I might just get my head through the door on my way out

You're reminding me of when I was young and energetic and could whip out a shirt in a few days! My last one took me 10 months. I put it in the naughty pile after the collar got the better of me. Tyrned out, after a bit of googling, that the prescribed method was the faffy one with no clear aesthetic advantage, rather than the one I'd used with no frustration, previously.

@Bill  Make sure you use the exact seam allowance on the sleeve head. If you make it a fraction too narrow, the sewing line on the sleeve will be a tiny bit bigger and the armhole a tiny bit smaller, so you get the bit of gathering. (imagine the sleeve top and armhole as circles) It is worth the time tacking the sleeve in before you sew it, then you can adjust it. After a while you will 'get your eye in' and it becomes easier.

Your User Name and Entry Number
Bill. 1 entry only.
What is it and for whom?
Summer shirt. For muggins here.
Fabric and Pattern/instructions used
Cotton. Pattern and instructions from a book - The Gentlemen's Wardrobe by Vanessa Mooncie.
A short description on how you made it
Cursing, luck and a stubbornness to see things through. Oh and a new machine that does what it's supposed to do. All hail the mighty Atelier.
Specifically flat felled seams on the sides and sleeves. These could have been wider in hindsight. The shoulder tops got mucked up through inexperience - it's my first shirt. Things could be tidier. Much tidier. But that'll improve with experience I hope. I chose to go with the 'medium' plan based on the books size chart. With the exception of the collar button which I can't fasten (I never use that anyway) it fits perfectly. Sheer luck mostly. Nothing was altered from the original plan.

Hit a roadblock.  Got a lot of the dress done but other things have a deadline too.  Could be finished in an hour or two. I wanted to add pockets but hadn't time to look for my pocket pattern but look what was in my Threads email!  Still hopeful!

DH's shirt won’t be finished for the competition.  I’ll post on my diary when its done.  If I was at home I’d probably finish in time.

Progress.  Got pockets in, tidied up the pieced edges of the skirt and sewed in the half belt ties. Attached skirt to top.  Zip and back seam, armholes and hem to do. Then iron. There is hope yet.

Today is officially the last day of the competition but, as I have visitors for the next few days, I won't be peering over anybody's shoulder  ;)

I said photos by 6th April because I knew I wouldn't be available during the first few days of the month. Please refer to the template-ish thing on the first page if you haven't already given some blurb on your creation.

I hope to have the voting ready to go by the 7th.

I decided I didn't love what I made enough to enter - it was that pesky Marcy Tilton outfit with the enormous neckline - but it is at least wearable.
Good luck to all the entrants.

Toileandtrouble's Entry
Summer dress for the sunny day.
Cotton print from stash.  Butterick 6676 Cup D and the view with the front ties.

Still needed a bit of a FBA so let out the front darts a little and took a tiny dart at the armhole.  The front skirt was then wider and didn't fit the narrow fabric, so I put in pieces at the bottom using quilting tape to match up the pattern. (Did a great job)  Also lengthened the skirt to balance the top more.   Added pockets using the free Threads pattern.
When I finished, found the invisible zip was not necessary, so took it out to use elsewhere.
Had to photograph on the duct tape dummy, but it doesn't hang properly because she has no bottom at all.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Bring on the sunny day.

Last minute.com, as usual
Mocarroll entry no2
New Look 6413 (https://www.minerva.com/mp/1201029/new-look-sewing-pattern-6413) jumpsuit for me
fabric stretch linen from Croft Mill
The toile of the bodice was huge so I re-drafted it completely, taking it up at the shoulders, re-drawing the armhole and taking in CF.  It didn't help that I didn't order enough fabric as I didn't notice it was only 130cm wide when I ordered.  Fortunately the bottom part fitted without alteration (other than shortening by about 6 inches for my 5ft frame).
I must remember to leave plenty of time if I need the loo because it's a bit of a struggle to get it off.  Next time I would probably insert the zip right into the front crotch seam rather than stopping it above the waist.  Other than that it's very comfortable.
