Patterns Discussion / Square neck dress pattern
« on: April 03, 2023, 17:45:18 PM »
Has anyone come across a dress pattern for a square neck but NOT with puff sleeves?
I found New Look 6567 but only up to size 16 and I need an 18.

Patterns Discussion / Re: Gifting unopened pdf patterns?

What about a scenario where a pdf pattern is purchased, downloaded and printed in a copyshop.  Can u gift the physical pattern if the purchaser hasn't used it?

Patterns Discussion / sussex Seamstress Framfield Dress
« on: March 28, 2023, 17:27:43 PM »
Here's the Framfield dress from Sussex Seamstress made  up with Immanuels £3 per metre viscose.
IMO this is a great pattern and there's a very good tutorial on their website.
I'm very pleased with the shape and will definitely make it again.

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Re: Cutting Dressmaking Fabric

I use a cutting board on a SHIRTMASTER ironing board (https://www.argos.co.uk/product/6182221).  Max height is 93cm which is good enough for me (I'm only 5' tall) so I don't have to bend much.

I had an Olivia Larger size mannequin which I sold  while ago but I did miss it.
I managed to source an as new size 14-22 version locally for a good price and now get pretty good use out of it.  It's modified to my size with bra and stuffing etc and I find it invaluable for altering ready to wear tops which have little or no shape.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Non-Creasing Fabric
« on: March 12, 2023, 11:01:50 AM »
I find that viscose is lovely to iron, but creases very badly when washed or worn - has your viscose got something else in it?
@Acorn   Yes it does iron well, but I don't find it creasing badly when worn and the creases will drop out.  I'm not sure if the viscose I use is a blend as Immanuels often don't know the content of their fabrics.
Attached is a picture of a viscose I just ordered from them and this is DEFINITELY a blend as it came out of the package without a crease! :)  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

@Acorn   I am a great fan of viscose (pure viscose, as opposed to polyester viscose).
Creases will drop out if hung for a couple of hours and it drapes beautifully.  Its also not too hot to wear in the warm weather.
Immanuel's facebook page has loads of viscose for £3 per metre, and if you look at the [very bad] photo of a dress I posted last week (under Pattern discussion "Honeybourne Dress"), that's made of viscose.

@SewRuthieSews Why did it not occur to me that I could use some of my stash and donate the proceedings to charity?  Thank you for the idea  :D
@Bumblebuncher I recently donated a stash of fabric (and a working sewing machine) to "tools with a mission".  Not only do they take machines but they also take decent size pieces of fabric and haberdashery because when they send the machines to Africa they include a start-up sewing kit.  https://www.twam.uk/
They may have a donation centre near you.

Where would I find fabric to make neckbands and cuffs for sweatsshirts?
TIA

Does anyone have any denim in their stash they might want to sell?  I'm looking for mid-weight but am flexible.  Ideally not BLACK.
Length 1.5 metres plus.

Sewing Machines / Re: Stitching problem Bernina 330
« on: March 09, 2023, 17:45:24 PM »
Thanks again for the feedback, and I also put my problem on FB Bernina Lovers Group and got this answer which I thought other Bernina owners might find useful:

..." service person told me it was threading... go watch some tutorials, they show holding the thread between the spool and the first tension disc with the right hand the whole time you are wrapping the thread with your left hand around the remainder of the thread path... then one tutorial showed gently sawing the thread in the top tension disc (I guess to seat it) Even the sales lady who checked me out seemed a little surprised. I had never had a problem NOT doing that with my 770 for years. Maybe some machines are more finicky?"

I'm keeping this as an aide memoire for when I change threads next time.

@Ouryve I think its a tension disc problem.  I held the thread in two hands and pressed it gently thru the toptension disc which is located at the left hand side of the handle then through the rest of the threading guides, the machine is now stitching properly :thumb:
Hopefully all is now ok.
Thank you to everybody (and to @KayK for the very helpful checklist) who responded.
Annie  :)

Sorry to keep pestering about this, but attached are samples of top and  underside of the stitching.  I rethreaded with Gutterman and filled the bobbin with same thread.  The tension is set to the red symbol on the dial as per the bernina manual.
I'm not sure its a thread problem but more of a tension problem?  (I checked again and the thread I used successfully yesterday was gutterman, after all).
Any ideas anyone?
