Title: "Morning Glory" (Frances Lilly Designs)
Post by: rubywishes on May 13, 2017, 08:44:17 AM
I bought this pattern a lifetime ago and pulled it out the other day thinking it would be a good way to de-clutter some of my bitsy pieces of stash.
First  4 blocks done, 32 to go.  I've changed the placement of a few of the little bow tie blocks but otherwise it is as the pattern dictates. It seemed to take forever to do all the piecing and squaring up but now that that is done, the assembly seems to be quite quick and straightforward.

Rubes that is lovely!  Your colour choices as always, spot on!

Is it for someone special, because if not, it should be!  :flower: <3

That's super.  As you say a bit fiddly to get all the little blocks squared up (and the right way around!) but worth the effort.   Looking forward to seeing the finished item.  0_0

That is so pretty with all those lovely bright colours and a good way of using up little bits of f fabric. What size is it?

Thank you everyone for your lovely comments.  The quilt will measure 70" x 70" so will be quite a size. Colour placement...ugh.......I just gave up trying to work out what should "go next to what"  and have just been whacking whatever comes to hand first into the "next" space. I was determined to use up as many of my scraps as possible so attention to colour matching had to be left at the door with the muddy boots...so to speak.  :[

I've got enough scrap cut out to do a second one and may even try to get a third one done so I have one for each of my daughters. And at the rate I get quilts done that should just about see me into the New Year! 0_0

Hahaha...a :toast: and a big fat piece of  :cake: to the person who can pick the error in my block!  I was scrolling through the pics on my phone today at work during morning tea break and suddenly saw a glaring error in the block. Laughed out loud and thought how weird is that.....I can piece a block, checking it as I go and then once finished, admire it countless times due to my smugness and not once, not once notice that I have made an error!  :) Now that has to be some sort of skill eh?!

And it bugged me all day at work and it was the first thing I did when I got home....fired up the Bernina and grabbed the stitch ripper!!!! 0_0

I'll claim that glass of wine (you can keep the cake I don't have much of a sweet tooth)...

on the left side as you look at the pic, the coloured 4 patch is staggered.....

and here is a pic of my beautiful fireplace...

Haha - I think I've got it.  Study the middle three tiles on each side...

The sort of thing you only ever notice if you spend a lot of time staring at something.

A design like that is very difficult to do without getting at least one bit wrong!  It's what will make the finished quilt unique because it's hand made.  ;)

This quilt which I made a couple of years ago has similar, but not identical design, and there are at least two places where I got the orientation of a small 4-squares block wrong.  I think one of the mistakes is near the foot of the bed.

Its a beautiful design, and I am looking forward to seeing the finished product.

I made my mother a quilt for her 90th birthday - hand quilted, the lot. When I'd given it to her and it was on her bed, I took a photo, and guess what - there was a 4-patch round the wrong way. Every time I look at the photo, it shouts at me, but if you look at the quilt it's very hard to spot, even when you know it's there.

Nope, couldn't leave it.....all fixed...let's see if I have the same OCD enthusiasm by the time I get to the 9th block or, oh dear......the 12th (gads what am I considering here!).
Brenda, I may use your quilt for inspiration as at 70" square it is not going to be big enough for DD2's and hubbys' bed so I am now contemplating either adding more blocks and/or borders and farkles.

And Im it's a lovely fireplace and funny thing is I noticed straight away the difference in the little tiles but thought it was purposeful to keep the eyes focused on the beauty of them! Lord, I am a bit slow on the "catch on" aren't I...sigh.....

I love that pattern! Might keep a copy in my file. It would be great for using scraps too. How big is the pictured block? 32 must be a big quilt.

Ha! I didn't even notice the fireplace was imperfect. I did wonder why you'd thrown in a photo of your fireplace , Imi. Had to spend some time, even with the clue, before I noticed the little pineapple shaped things were different. How many visitors ever notice?

It reminds me of when I had my fireplace installed and the fitters just put the tiles in random order. They weren't too pleased when I made them take  the front of the fireplace all out again to fix them. Visitors would have noticed mine!

I hadn't realised that that pic was only one block Rubes....you could very effectively QAYG that design.

Using dark joining strips will give the quilt a leaded glass look.

Sorry everybody I seem to have caused some confusion....the pic is of 4 blocks sewn together to make one of 9 larger blocks. The larger block as pictured measures approx 24" square so 3 X 3 is going to give me about 70" square. That will be just enough for the width of the bed but about 10" too short for the length....and just sitting on the top of the bed would look silly...I need some side hang so I guess I have 2 options:
Option 1...bite the bullet and make another 3 big blocks (12 little ones) to make the quilt 4 x 3 instead of 3 x 3. This would give me the rectangle I am looking for and then I would whack on a border to give it some side hang.
Option 2...use the Golden Ratio maths and just add a 15" border all around and make it 100" square.

Hmmmmm decisions, decisions.  I'm liking the idea of the 15" border...a lot less faffing about than making more little thingies and then still adding a border on as well. I dunno, I'm off for a Shiraz and some dinner..been a beast of a day at work!

My choice would be three more blocks Rubes and a border at the sides

Im having to make yet more (sigh) Tiddly Two inch Twist and Twirl blocks for the border of my nieces quilt.
Hideous drudgery now but got to be done!

At least Im not under any time constraints ...her 21st is next March!!!  0_0

Maybe I could procrastinate this by righting :o ... ahem...writing a thread about it...hhhmmnnn

Yeah, you're probly right....3 x 4 makes good sense. I'll have a rummage around tomorrow and see if I can find enough fabric and enthusiasm to sally forth yet again into the world of HST's. Okay, stomping off to bed now in a "sookie grump".

If you add a 15 inch border, you will have to quilt it all spectacularly - which might be what you want to do. of course, but ...

If you need to add length but don't want to make more full size blocks, add pieced sections top and bottom, in a complementary block style (peer at my avatar and you'll just about make out what I mean).

Alrighty......I'm struggling with the idea of borders....definately don't want to spend a gazillion hours making more HSTs etc so was thinking of a couple of plain borders...maybe a darkish green, 4" border followed by a white 5" border and then the dark green as the binding. I'm thinking  the two different colored borders at only 4" each won't be so wide that they need a lot of quilting to dress them? What do you think? And what sort of quilting would you do.....SITD or something a bit more pattern-ish?
But then, maybe it would look weird with a couple of plain borders and no HSTs etc so if I can't be bothered doing more blocks I should just put a binding on it and leave it at 70 x70"?

It would look really nice with a sawtooth border, or maybe some flying geese. It probably would look weird with just a plain border - might suggest you'd wimped out of trying anything else. If you're all HST'd out right now, why not put it aside for a week and then have another look at it. Unless there's a deadline to finish it, what's the harm in letting it 'mature' while you decide.

This quilt (http://paternoster.orpheusweb.co.uk/quilts/baby.htm) had the sawtooth border made with the prairi points folded diagonally twice so that they slipped inside each other.  This one (http://paternoster.orpheusweb.co.uk/quilts/star%20block%20swap/star%20block%20swap.htm) has them made with a straight fold and then corners to centre.

sigh......Brenda and DOB....you're right....sigh........

postscript: decided today on a 2.5" dark red with geometric thin black lines through it border to frame the body of the top and then a 3.5" border of quarter square triangles in white and the same red as the first border...did a practice run with a small piece purchased and am happy with it so tomorrow it's back to the shop to purchase what's needed. phew, feel much better now that I've got over that hump! Just as long as the blooming shop still has the fabric that is...it was the only bolt they had...yikes  :o

I finally found time this weekend to finish the border on this quilt top and am very pleased with it. When it is complete, the binding will be the same red as the first border and the corner blocks and I have a lovely fire engine red backing for it. Lordy, that thing took about 4 washes and 2 soaks with colour catchers before I got all the excess dye out of it..phew!  I won't be sandwiching and quilting it for some time as I have a few other quilts I want to get to the same point so I can quilt them all together as I will be swapping machines out of my table to do the quilting......maiden voyage with the Juki...how excited will I be!  I think this quilt will be SITD all over each block and am going to have a crack at fmq SITD with it.

S'cuse the brown quilt peeking out underneath the new top on my bed.
