I have the space for an industrial (and the green light from OH, the green light was only really necessary since it’s as big as a bit of furniture)...it would be for leather, loose covers, denim, cushions and bags mainly.

What should I look for and what should I avoid?  Years ago I used industrial machines at work but I don’t remember much about the make etc other than that they were the type that were built into the table which is something that I was looking for this time too.

I have some lovely RTW bits that are linen, they have been washed and washed but even when they were new they were nice and floppy and hung well.

Does anyone know where you can buy such linen?  Or do makers subject their cloth to washing techniques to get it to drape. TIA!

I’ve been quoted £60 to service an old singer 99.  The machine appears to have been lovingly looked after by its previous owner, I bought it for £20 from the owners daughter in law who looked at me like I was mad when I told her I was going to use it and did she know how it ran?!

I can’t get the tension right, and anything that turns or moves is stiff, including the hand crank wheel.  Other than that it does a nice even stitch and trundles along nicely.  Of course it was pretty dusty so I have given it a brush.

I had been half looking for a dungaree pattern, yesterday on Instagram I saw a pair made up using the Sew House 7 Burnside Bibs pattern...I was sold and the pattern is on it's way!  Sewhouse7 Burnsidebib

I was wondering what other patterns anyone else has made up and how they have turned out?  also if anyone else has made the sew-house ones?

Tech Know How / [SOLVED] How to change profile picture please

I put my picture up quickly and now I can’t seem to change it, can anyone let me know how please?

20+ years ago I shortened a lovely pair of second hand curtains that my mother had been given.  Fast forward to now and the linings have gone to pot and are falling apart.  Being a creature of habit my mother wants the curtains to remain, so has asked me to re-line them.

I’m not a fan of having hand made curtains dry cleaned, there is no dirt on them as such and I worry that the stitches will come undone. I’m wondering if a good beating would do instead?  By good I mean how they used to do it ‘in the olden days’ , firm but careful.

Access All Accessories / Books about bag making
« on: May 07, 2018, 17:44:47 PM »
I'm looking for a book to inspire, challenge and instruct, if anyone is able to help?

I've seen lots that cover totes and other fairly simple bags, I make those already so I'm looking for a book that covers slightly more complicated bags.  Rucksacks with fittings and handbag type bags, purses woukd be good too.

TIA!

Patterns Discussion / Is it true that some patterns are just cut better?
« on: December 06, 2017, 13:53:22 PM »
...well, drawn better so that you can make clothes that have a better cut!

I read on another (non sewing forum) a comment that was 'I only buy vogue patters because they are the only ones that I like the cut of'.  I was like, 'oh!. o.k'.   Is was wondering if this was the case?  It seemed a bit extreme to write off an enter swathe of patter brands.

I have always ended up hashing my own patterns up or adjusting ones that I have bought.  I did make 1 pair of trousers recently and I didn't have to to change a thing re the pattern, it was great, I was wondering if this was down to luck or if I could find more patterns like this.  I made a usable toile up of some p.j bottoms for DD, the shape was just odd, so yet again I was hashing about with the curved rule and yard stick.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place for my post, or if it would be better under another topic  (apologies I've got it wrong!).

I used to have a very corporate job, the one bit of it that I loved was training and coaching.  Fast forward a few years and I need very flexible working arrangements.

I have had an idea that I could teach sewing, it's somthing that I've been able to do since I was 7 or 8.  I have a house full of things I've made, good enough it would seem for freinds to say 'do it'.  The thing is that they can't sew at all...

I have no idea if my sewing is good enough or not!  I seem to be suffering with a massive bout of imposter syndrome.  I would start out with complete and utter beginners, people who don't know a needle from a pin, and go on from there.

I've always been a bit of a maverick break the rules, try and see just for fun type of sewer but somewhere along the way I've learnt how to follow a pattern and draw up a made to measure skirt block!

Any opinions, thoughts or advice would be wonderful!

In the wardrobe / Has anyone made any of these patterns yet?
« on: August 16, 2017, 12:18:21 PM »
Any from the Lotta Jansdotter book https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lotta-Jansdotter-Everyday-Style/dp/1617691747

Or the Bianca coat from  sew me something patterns here: http://www.sewmesomething.co.uk/catalogue_item.php?catID=11785&prodID=97417

I have made up a toile of the Bianca coat from a fairly thick fabric (my old front door curtains) to make it fairly realistic buthe I can't get the front to hang quite right.

No toiles for the Lotta Jansdotter patterns  yet but they are next on the list.

House Beautiful / Please critique my curtain idea!
« on: June 30, 2017, 11:53:43 AM »
I have found 2 lovely off cuts at my local curtain fabric shop, they co-ordinate very well together and originally I thought that I would make cushions.  Now that I have draped them about at home I think that they would be good as curtains.  Each bit is just a bit longer than one full length drop (so if I needed a 1 width single dress curtain on one side of my window I would be fine).

So, option a:  make a pair of full length curtains with the top 2' or so in the heavier of the two fabrics, the lower part in the lighter weight fabric.  Pattern wise this would work well.  Should I interline the thinner fabric with lining fabric to bring it up to the same weight as the top fabric?

option b:  full length curtains with the leading edge in the heavier fabric and the outer edges in the the lighter wight fabric.  Each length of fabric would only be 1/2 width AND some fabric would be lost due to a seam running floor to ceiling.

Both curtains would be lined with a hidden tab top (my current favorite type of top for a curtain as I fancy a change from yeas of pencil pleat).

Has anyone made anything similar before?   I have 'interlined' curtains with lining type fabric before to thicken it up a bit and it worked well...

In the wardrobe / Best pattern to buy for first time making jeans
« on: April 16, 2017, 21:09:04 PM »
I have seen these jeans here https://creaturesofcomfort.us/collections/pants/products/jamie-jeans-denim they are terrifically expensive, I was wondering where the best place to look would be to look for a jeans pattern so that I could make something similar.  I'm not sure that I could pull off quite such a high waist though!! TIA
