Title: Looking for a ruler
Post by: CraftyIrish on March 09, 2021, 13:16:50 PM
Hey all not sure if there's one out there but I'm looking for a ruler that has marking all along the ruler for the 3/8 inch. I have had a few things now where I needed to mark out a 3/8 inch and have to just  guess it.  all my rulers are the same with a big yellow band going around the ruler.

Well all my rulers are for quilting I have started making teddies and purse and lots of the patterns have 3/8 inch seam allowance. Plus now I'm learning to make clothes and having to do a 3/8 inch seam on a zip. Then when I was marking out the pattern some of the pieces I had to add 3/8 seam allowance all around it. It was a nightmare doing it with a tape measure.

My Quiltlines ruler has 3/8" marks at inch intervals like this (the bottom of the numbers is the 3/8" line on the short end - the top edge in the picture is the long edge):

This (https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Quiltlines-Quilting-Imperial-Visibility-Fluorescent/dp/B08HRYJ35L) is the updated version (which is apparently now non-slip!)

If it is just for marking, the ruler you show is in increments of 1/8, so three of those are 3/8"  :)

But around the edge the green strip covers the area from 1/4" to 1/2" so the 3/8" line goes down the middle of the green stripe and is therefore hidden.

Yes, it's the line that's causing the problem

Oh I see now, you want the 3/8 visible all the way down

@CraftyIrish could you not mark out a 3/8 line on the edge of a sheet of card and use that.  I have done this many times  :)

Is this what you need?

It was as cheap as chips but I can’t remember where from.

I use it all the time and am looking for a metric version.

If you are not having to mark great distances, this 6" Omnigrid ruler might do. Looking at the photo, I think the ends of the "long tick marks" on the edge are at 3/8".

I have one of these somewhere and can check the measurements if it is of interest.

Just find a metric ruler.  To all intents and purposes 3/8" is the equivalent of 10mm  :)

If you tape two standard pencils together they usually draw about 3/8 apart. Easier for curves than a rule too.

This is a vinyl tape made for putting on your quilting rulers (https://smile.amazon.com/Omnigrid-2102-Glow-Orange-Yellow/dp/B000YZ5QYQ/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=quilting+ruler+tape&qid=1615320181&sr=8-2). You use it to highlight the measurement you are using. Removes easily when you are done with that project.

That's a good idea  :)

That's a great price @CraftyIrish  :) -- canny and crafty!

Sew Easy make some good tools and are always good value. I got grading rulers several years ago but nowhere near that price. One in metric (Clover 50cm) and one in imperial (Collins 18"). It took me ages to get hold of the latter but I've got pattern drafting books that use both systems so it's easier than converting all the time.

It is only flimsy not one you would run a rotary cutter along. Purely for measuring and drawing circles and curves.

Yeah I read all the reviews on it but thats all I want it for is to measure with and the circle  thing is a bonus.

Used the ruler on the skirt lining I'm doing and I love it it makes marking so much faster.

@Alexp  No!
Two standard hexagonal pencils taped together produce line 1/4 inch apart.
