This old embroidery machine used to belong to my mother in law. I have had it working in the past with its on board patterns, but now it just says "check if upper or lower thread is cut". I've rethreaded top thread and bottom, changed the needle and cleaned (though it was already spotless) it. Any idea what to try next?

Did you take the needle plate off and the bobbin case out when you cleaned it. It may look spotless but or only takes a tiny bit of thread stuck somewhere for them to play up.

Yes, @Nuttywife59 , I did that.
I've been internet browsing and saw suggested it may be a timing thing. Think I'll just put it back in the cupboard, lol.

Has it got an automated thread cutter if it has its possible that the thread cutter hasn't returned properly after cutting the thread.
-
Erm ... I'd have to go and read the instructions. Thanks for your interest. I'll get back to you tomorrow.

No there’s no thread cutter on this machine. It’s far too old for that :).
Try using a piece of bias binding and gently love it back and forth between the tension discs in case there’s any lint stuck. Otherwise a service?

I gave up trying to make this work. Other half had a go. Said, nope, can't figure out the problem. Removed the casing, jiggled bits and bobs, said nope, can't figure it out. Put it back together, and it worked! 0_0

That sounds about right they love doing that to us. It may have been that the bobbin holder wasn't quite seated right but you may never know the answer so e times they just want to throw a spanner in he works.
