Embroidery Machines / Re: Support fabric

I would say you have correctly identified the problem. For me, tearaway stabiliser has limited specific uses, especially on a design with fairly dense stitching, or on an item that will be washed and worn.  There are many different types of stabiliser, but for most projects a medium weight cutaway is probably the one to reach for. When you have finished, trim away up to about 3/8”from the design leaving remaining stabiliser in place. Have fun - it’s very addictive!

Sewing Machines / Re: Sewing machine service and repair cost
« on: May 20, 2023, 18:11:18 PM »
Two weeks ago I paid £80 to have my two year old Bernina 570QE serviced through a smallish local dealer. The technician picks machines up from the shop one week and returns them the next, working from home, so presumably lower overhead costs than many. I believe that the dealer also earns a handling fee from that amount.

Around here they do seem to vary significantly. I am aware that another dealer in a nearby city charges £120. It could be beneficial to look for someone independent, rather than go though a dealership. However, I suspect they may need to be Bernina certified to maintain your warrantee.

I love mine, but I do take it off when easing one layer into another, as then it works against you.

When you need to do a pair of something, like putting in sleeves, don’t start unless you have time to do both. (They always match better.)

When the differential feed is correct, the seam will lay flat on a table, without being gathered or stretched. Keep testing on scraps. I find most jerseys need some positive diff feed on my machine.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Stretch Denim
« on: September 12, 2022, 12:02:29 PM »
I recently bought some lovely denim from Sherwoods which is just the right weight and has 2% spandex, so some stretch but not too much. (98% cotton - no poly) It comes in a range of colours and is called ‘Deegan’. It’s perfect for my denim preference  and I will definitely be buying more.

Sewing Machines / Re: Where do I go from here?

The main issue with a 9mm machine is that the feed dogs are further apart and changing the needle plate or the foot doesn’t change that. It means when stitching close to the edge of the fabric there is less control and traction with the feed dogs. It’s also much more tricky to stitch tight curves. I use a 9mm machine for most things, but there are times when my old 5.5mm machine has to come out to get the control and accuracy needed for intricate things.

Sorry - tried to slightly modify above post and it started a new one!

Me Miss, Please Miss ... Hand waving furiously in the air

The 9mm is really too wide for me ..... I am after a 5.5mm max stitch width.

Whats the fuss about the stitch width???

Surely if you have a 9mm you can do a 5.5 mm, but not if you only have a 4.5 mm ???

Someone please enlighten me ???

Your Favourite Suppliers / Re: Wool Warehouse

… and those lovely organza bags.  So useful.

They’re in Leamington Spa and BC (before COVID), I was able to collect my order from them, thus avoiding postage and the wait.

I can walk there. Also missing the BC opening. Are you in Leam too?

Technical Help / Re: What size buttonholes?
« on: January 17, 2022, 17:33:39 PM »
As @Greybird says, they go in almost end ways (but not quite, once they are sewn on). What I have done in the past is hold a loop of tape in one hand and adjust it to get toggle to go through comfortably. Half the length of the loop is about the length of the buttonhole. Suggest you then try one on spare fabric of same thickness before committing. Make sure your toggle is also sewn to fabric to simulate the angle it will go in.

Thanks everyone. I do have a separate bobbin case on my Bernina, but would be hesitant to mess with it! My main concern (maybe unfounded) is the stitching breaking as the cushions are sat on. I think I will just use Gutermann and if I’m still worried I could always stitch twice.
