Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Re: Ann's Sewing Room (Third Try)
« on: January 19, 2020, 19:04:05 PM »
Very late to the party but I love your sewing space @Ann .

I'm always a bit envious of North American basement spaces. My tutu making friend in Canada has a fabulous space.

My sewing room is a converted single garage and, though lovely, could do with being double the size. It didn't take me long to almost completely fill the space.

Well!! I had no idea such a thing existed.  :)

@Ploshkin you are probably right although it isn't really about the cost. Some people would do the same with Chanel!!

The Show Must Go On / How is your hard work treated?

I make dance costumes and classical ballet tutus in my local area and have been a bit dismayed to see how some of the kids, and their parents, treat the costumes. I see hooped tutus bent in half inside carry bags and children eating chips and greasy sandwiches wearing a new costume or tutu !!  :o
I recently delivered a "tear off" dress over a doggy leotard for a 4 year old's debut song and dance competition. The Mum gushed over the outfit, tried it on the child and left it dumped on the changing room floor as she chatted. Someone pointed out that it was there and she promptly grabbed it, screwed it up and shoved it in her bag whilst carrying on chatting. I hope my face didn't betray the annoyance that I was feeling.   ><

My husband tells me that they can do whatever they want after they have paid for it, but I think it shows a lack of respect, not just for me but for the beautiful costume.
Most are not like this thankfully.

I got a cheap set from eBay and it is fine. I've used it for kids clothes and on some dancewear. If you search Kam snaps you should find something. You can get lovely shaped ones too.

The Show Must Go On / Re: A couple of my latest costumes
« on: December 12, 2019, 22:23:10 PM »
@smileabit I just used a basic long sleeved leotard pattern, I think it was My Childhood Treasures #10  that I changed to have a large keyhole back. I drew the design for the black parts on the paper pattern and appliqued onto the nude base before making up. I have used this technique for quite a few leos where younger girls need some coverage but want the cutaway design. The nude parts double as a lining with just a crotch lining added.
The stoning is all ab clear in various sizes from ss16 to ss40. I think the black is my favourite costume although this red one comes a close second and I just love this sassy pic.

Thank you ladies.
@Ohsewsimple oh I really do love bling!! @Catllar actually the fringe is a rayon loop but Mum forgot to pull the white thread out before letting her wear it  :D
You're right @Marniesews the red is Jalie Violeta and the black was a bit of a frankenpattern based on a picture that Aimee saw on Pinterest of a Romanian rhythmic gymnastics leotard that I copied shamelessly!!

The Show Must Go On / A couple of my latest costumes

After chatting with Jessie about leotards and stones I thought I would show a couple of costumes I made for last October competitions.
My granddaughter Aimee in black and her bestie Ava in red.

@b15erk I like Jalie as you can mix and match their patterns to some extent. If you like the fit of one at the top but another at the bottom they are simple to make a frankenpattern. Many of their gymnastics patterns are cut quite high and I add some to the bum as my dancers like a bit more coverage. One of my favourites for dance dresses for littlies is the sweetheart leo from My Childhood Treasures.

I'm trying to motivate myself to get on with costumes and tutus for comps on 1st February but Christmas and a fair bit of lethargy are getting in the way. I have several pieces started and waiting for fittings, which are very difficult to arrange as the kids have so much going on at this time of the year.
I feel your pain @Catllar regarding budget. I'm lucky when making troupe costumes for our dance school as they appreciate the cost of everything! That and the fact that I am by far the cheapest of all their costumers.  :P

The Haberdashery / Re: Rotary cutters, no luck with using them
« on: December 07, 2019, 21:40:00 PM »
I love mine, although using lycra and net I do go through a lot of blades. I use for straight cutting with a metre rule and freehand around curves. I do still use scissors too - they complement each other.
