In the wardrobe / Re: Monarch jacket
« on: July 01, 2019, 19:36:23 PM »
Quick and dead easy @SkoutSews. Raglan sleeves are always a cinch to sew and the overlocker helped. The hardest bit was attaching the snaps with hammer and a cotton reel (found that method on YouTube) after realising my lovely new Vario pliers didn't have the right attachment bits!

I've been disappointed with the fit of several indie patterns (why do they come up so small?) but this was spot on. The collar needs at least 40% stretch - my fabric had more) so you might need to use a ribbing for that.

In the wardrobe / Monarch jacket
« on: July 01, 2019, 18:08:44 PM »
This is the Indiesew Monarch Jacket, one of my favourite recent makes - and definitely one I can see myself wearing a lot outside of midsummer. I posted about the pattern here when it came out in April and I felt you weren't fans of the style so lets see if I've won anyone round...It's meant to be a boxy cardi/bomber jacket cross.

I made a straight size 4, just added 1" to the length and 5 snaps instead of 3 (good suggestion from @BrendaP). The fabric is a ribbed cotton/lycra jersey from dressfabrics.ie which was lovely to sew with - a less stable knit than recommended but I think it works. I bought the same in petrol and am considering making another. The jeans are my stretch denim Elle/Eleanore pant cross with a back yoke and useful back pockets - worn continuously since completion last month!

"The gift is to the giver, and comes back most to him - it cannot fail". Walt Whitman

You did good Annie. Been there too. And for your next project....?

What about the versatile and popular McCall 6696?  An alternative to a dress could be a summer jacket like this free pattern or - if it's got some stretch - narrow leg pants like these Maria Denmark Nanna pants.

Assuming you don't have an overlocker, then I'd be using a stretch needle a walking foot and a rotary cutter to make life easier. Fit is more forgiving with knits so I don't make a muslin but I might use some less precious fabric first. Even then, your next fabric could behave quite differently as I've found to my cost (and the charity shop's gain).

Also Have you read the reviews on PatternReview - always useful - and there are a lot of PR forum posts with queries and answers about construction. I'd be heading there first. Good luck!

I got that too but didn't notice the 15% off! Definitely more stylish than my cheap plastic wallets in magazine files but I'd need dozens so can't really justify the cost. Tempting though...

(I'm on my second Maker's Workbook - very useful they are).

If all else fails you could throw in the towel and ask the shop who does their alterations...or postpone the wedding  :)

Here's one. Go for it!

Is there a reason you can't just trace the pattern and keep the original pristine? I'd have thought Swedish tracing paper or similar would give you a robust copy that would last years.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Jersey fabric

Girl Charlee UK has nice  "cotton jersey blend" prints which tend to be a mixture of cotton, viscose, Lycra, sometimes poly. They vary somewhat in feel and texture but are usually quite "drapy" and make nice tops and you can request samples.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Log basket lining fabric?

Thanks for your kind offer Geoff @s2, however I'm in Ireland so unless you can teleport  :) I know the postage cost would be too steep.

It's on my list now so hopefully I'll get round to it this year!

Hi Geoff ( @s2 ) that antique blue IKEA bag serves well as lining for the stick basket. For the circular log basket I sewed a couple of free cloth tote bags together - not a stunning success as they're too thin and don't quite fit, but better than nothing. I keep meaning to make a "proper" one, so now I'll put it on my list. I've recently had a 6 month enforced hiatus from sewing but back in action now so no excuse!

I'm sitting here in a me-made plain black top and trousers - just home from playing in a concert (uniform is all black).  Now you come to mention it I'd say my home sewn clothes are about 2/3 plain though summer stuff is more patterned. My fabric stash is about 3/4 patterned so maybe I'm turning into one of you!

Fun with Fabric / Re: Using knit pattern for woven fabric?
« on: May 18, 2019, 22:32:59 PM »
I've seen it done successfully with pants, hernibs - usually means sizing up by one or two depending on the pattern. But I could foresee all kinds of problems with tops as wovens tend to have bust darts and other fitting/shaping. This article says much the same thing, basically that for a bodice it's not worth the bother. My feeling too!

Could you find a similar pattern intended for wovens? If you put a picture up someone here might  find you one.
