For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / KnitPro dpns
« on: July 07, 2022, 19:16:07 PM »
I have a set of 5 Knitpro Nova (the silver ones) double pointed needles, size 3.5mm, length 10cm, still on the card.

Free to a good home.  They'll fit in a standard envelope, so don't worry about postage.

Lovely needles, but be aware that they are short.  I couldn't cope with the length, even for a child's cardigan sleeve - they kept sticking into me.  However, plenty of people do use them very happily!

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Coverstitcher Woes
« on: June 19, 2022, 16:44:17 PM »
I have a Britannia CS4000 Coverstitcher.  It's been a while since I last used it, and I have just got it out to do the hem and neck on a t-shirt.  Every time I start to stitch it is fine for about an inch, and then (usually) the left hand needle thread breaks.  Sometimes it's the right hand one, and on occasion the looper thread.

I know I had this problem before, and that I found a solution (on the internet), but I cannot remember what it was, or find it.  A niggling voice at the back of my mind keeps mentioning the feed dogs.

I have tried tweaking the tension for the left hand needle thread, but that just makes that line of stitching a bit loose - and, as I said, it isn't always that thread anyway.

To cap it all I can't find the manual, and there doesn't seem to be one online.

Any ideas?

What sort of wadding do you use for a small wallhanging that is definitely not a quilt?

My strawberry thief wallhanging is about 28" by 22" (landscape), and I want it to stay nice and straight and unwrinkled.  It will have a sleeve for a pole.  I was wondering about using the sort of padded stabiliser that is used in bag making - Bosal or Pellon.

Any suggestions?

Just posted this on the vintage machines board.  It isn't really vintage, so I'm posting it here too.

If anyone knows of an led bulb that will fit a Husqvarna Megaquilter (the same as Janome 1600P and various others) I would be eternally grateful!  According to the manual it's 12v, 5W, and it looks like this:

I did manage to get one that fitted the description, intended for (from memory) a car number plate light, but it didn't fit very well, and didn't work.

A Good Yarn / Cardigans - Finished!
« on: April 25, 2022, 20:42:57 PM »
I have finished, washed and blocked the cardigans for the goddaughters.  I am a total convert to knitting all in one piece in the round, but I think I will stick to dpns for narrow sleeves!

I have knitted the size for 6 year olds (the girls are 3 and almost 5) because the size below was for a 4 year old.  Even then, I lengthened the sleeves after measuring something one of the girls had been wearing.  Better to have them turning the cuffs over for a while than only being able to wear them for a few months.

The top one has a shaped hem, but I really couldn't see the point, so the second one doesn't.

Your Favourite Suppliers / Higgs and Higgs
« on: April 07, 2022, 08:27:52 AM »
I placed an order with Higgs and Higgs at 6.26am today, and received the notification of shipment at 8.08am...  :faints:  (free 2nd class postage on orders over £50).

Not only that, but I emailed a query to them at 8.49pm yesterday and had a (helpful) reply at 9.35pm...  :faints:  :faints:

Clearly they don't sleep any better than I do!

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Steamrollering
« on: March 06, 2022, 18:04:05 PM »
Will those of you who have an iron that is really good at totally flattening your patchwork blocks, please share what sort it is?  Or just what features it has that you think make it good for this purpose.

I need a new iron, and although it has to be a steam iron for the ordinary stuff, I'm really most interested in getting one that can truly flatten blocks.

A Good Yarn / Circular Needles
« on: February 14, 2022, 13:13:52 PM »
I am making a cardigan for a 4 year old.  It is knitted top down, no seams, and I have done everything except the sleeves.  The pattern says 'Place the sleeve sts onto larger long circular needle / dpns'.  This is the 4mm circular needle that I have been using for the main part of the cardigan.  The cable is 40cm and the needles are the standard 10.5cm each.  There is surely no way that a 54 stitch sleeve can be knitted in the round on a cable needle that long!!?

Anyway, I bought a very small, 25cm (total length), Knitpro circular needle, which has 6cm needle tips.  There is no question that the sleeve can be knitted on this, I'm just not sure whether I can cope with needle tips this short.

Am I going to have to use dpns?  I can, I just don't like them.

Presumably even the shorter needle tips (roughly 8.5cm) with a 20cm cable would still be far too long.

What would you do?

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / What do you call...
« on: February 05, 2022, 17:03:33 PM »
... a quilt which may be made up of blocks, but they form one overall design rather than a repeated pattern?

I want to look for books of patterns like that, but just can't think how to describe them.

A Good Yarn / Crochet Hooks
« on: January 19, 2022, 12:40:37 PM »
Having finished my scarf and hat (all but blocking and fringing) I decided to brush up on my (very limited) crochet skills.  I have a kit to make a small blanket, which seems to be a good place to start.  Last night I was trying to find a crochet hook in the right size on Amazon and ended up completely swamped by what was on offer.

I have only used the ordinary (probably) Milward grey metal ones before, and have been quite happy with them.  Now, though, there are lots and lots of hooks with handles made of wood or plastic.  Do any of you use these, and do you find them good?  I'm reluctant to change from something I'm happy with, but don't wan to miss out if there's something better!

Also, what are the good brands of crochet hook.  I use (and love) Knitpro knitting needles, but the few Knitpro crochet hooks I found on Amazon didn't seem to be pointy enough to me - but the pictures weren't very good.

Oh, and I found a crochet hook of the right size in the end - Pony, beech, no handle - one had been supplied with the blanket kit!

House Beautiful / Piping
« on: January 12, 2022, 13:03:46 PM »
Do you think it will work if I make piping from this cotton twill tape?

It's for my sewing machine cover, and it will have to go around some short, tight curves.

Your Favourite Suppliers / Coles of Nottingham
« on: December 20, 2021, 15:39:00 PM »
I have to give a shout-out to Coles.  My embroidery machine (Husqvarna Viking Topaz 25) has had an issue with the needle clamp, and this morning it reached the stage of being unable to hold onto a needle.  Mr Acorn (who deserves a shout-out all of his own) took it apart and found that the thread inside the clamp had worn away.

I phoned to see whether Coles (who supplied the machine) could supply the part.  They checked, found that the needle bar and clamp had changed since my machine was made, so would both need replacing (taking it from a DIY to an engineer's job), and then pointed out that it was still under warranty!

It is being picked up tomorrow, they will service it as well as repair it, and then she apologised because they wouldn't be able to do it before Christmas!!

Embroidery and Embellishment / Embroidery on Velvet
« on: December 14, 2021, 15:52:56 PM »
A week ago I did an embroidery onto velvet with my embroidery machine.  It worked well, but I wasn't happy with the colours (partly because the velvet is dark blue, and the pattern was designed for pale fabrics).

Today I repeated the embroidery with different colours, and also repeated some of the colours to make them more concentrated (ie got to the end of a colour and then started again from the beginning to go over the same ground again).  It worked really well, and I was very pleased.  I put both embroideries into the washing machine to rinse away the soluble stabiliser, and then ironed them on the back.  When I turned them over I could see marks on the newer one.

It seems that the hoop had rubbed away the surface of the velvet, pretty much all the way around.  This didn't happen at all on the first one.

Has anyone else had this happen?  I can see three possible causes:
  • I used different hoops - the same size, but different - maybe the hoop was rougher?
  • Because I repeated some of the sections, the fabric was under greater stress for the second one (29k stitches for the first one, roughly 45k for the second).  Maybe it rubbed against the hoop more?
  • The velvet (which is good quality cotton velvet) is just going to do this, and I would be better using something else?

I have an alternative design, but it is 72k stitches, and I really don't want to do all that and then find it has the same problems.

Any thoughts/ideas/experiences that might help?

The Haberdashery / Source for Good Quality Cord...?
« on: November 30, 2021, 19:00:20 PM »
You may remember that every year I make a posh hot water bottle cover for my Mum, who uses a hot water bottle on her back every day.  This is last year's:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

You can see that I use cord at the top to pull it up, and the cord gets a lot of use.  Last year I bought it from Amazon, and it looked like very good quality with a nice finish.  However, it is not good quality, and has worn appallingly.

I don't mind paying a reasonable amount, but I have no idea where I can go that I can trust to provide decent stuff.  Any ideas?
