For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Stellaire for sale
« on: September 02, 2022, 10:23:06 AM »
I keep meaning to put my Brother Stellaire XE1 up on Ebay so I am giving fair warning here if any one is interested. I'll be asking £3.5k on Ebay but a buyer via this site can have it for £2500 to save me the hastle.

Well cared for, running well, 16M stitches in 2.5 years. I'll even throw in a selection of threads, top and bottom.
I've moved on to a multi needle machine so the Stellaire is now redundant.

Shout up if you are interested.
Brian.

Collection from Birmingham or Courier at cost.

Further downside is that whilst the bandage shows a serious sewer, it most likely covers up very badly scratched paint from all the pins that have been stuck into it.

Vintage Machines / Re: Cleaning yellowed machines
« on: June 15, 2020, 19:03:07 PM »
The yellowing of plastic machines from the 60's and 70's is due to UV action on a fire retardent (bromine) which is added to the plastic. The discolouration is not just on the surface but goes deep into the plastic. There is a method to whiten the plastic using hydrogen peroxide and UV light but it can have less desirable side effects, and is only temporary. Re-yellowing can be slowed by using a UV blocking acrylic laquer but again there is no definitive proof of how effective it would be.
If you are interested in trying the process, Google for Retr0Bright. There are numerous articles about using the process on computer cases.

I've checked my 1293 against the Marathon thread chart and would recommend their 1275.
Due to a sporadic supply situation on 1000m Madeira during lockdown I have used quite a bit of the Marathon range (hence having their thread chart) and would say that the thread is comparable but is looser wound on the spool than Madeira which can cause knotting in the machine. So Madeira cones work fine on the top of the machine but Marathon always go on a seperate thread stand to give the tangles chance to sort themselves before entering the machine.
I can recommend BSK for supply of Marathon spools, £2.79 for 1000m.

@ochanomizu
The upper bearing is an interference fit on the shaft and retained in the plastic housing with a wire circlip. The plastic neck of the motor will be very tight in the machine as the plastic swells with age. I actually found a spark plug socket to be a good drift as it needs to be a tight fit in the hole so that you aren't hammering against the circlip clips. After you have removed it, file or sand the collar down so that it is a push fit by hand for replacement. You will see that i have applied silicon grease to mine to aid removal. Hence, remove from wall, strip to remove motor, photograph, replace motor, reassemble and replace on wall, total 5 minutes.
Shout up if I can help any further.

Embroidery Machines / Re: DIME Magnetic Hoops

I can't see them being worth that unless you are doing a lot of multiple hooping such as on quilts, and repeatedly doing it. £200 is a lot of time that needs to be saved to justify the purchase.

I grabbed a photo from the internet, digitised it with Embrilliance Stitch Artist and stitched it out today. 8" by 9". First real digitising I have done so jump in there!

I placed an order for 20 cops with BSK at 12.35 today. Had an email from them at 12.39 to say it was despatched. Had another email from DPD at 2.00pm to say they would be delivering to me tomorrow. Absolutely astounding service.

@sewmuchmore Thank you for your reply. I was 99% decided to go with Marathon. Now I've got to decide whether to order from Marathon direct, or to go with BSK who are cheaper. Decisions, decisions.

@Kad Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately the Empress range of threads is too limited in palette, 90 colours as apposed to the 370 that I am used to with Madeira.

Now that thread suppliers are shutting up shop, I am having difficulty replenishing supplies. Up to now I have used exclusively Madeira but now cannot get it. Jaycotts can still supply 200m reels of rayon, albeit slowly, but 1000m cops seem to have dried up. Both Lords and Barnyarns have pulled down the shutters so I am now looking to another manufacturer. I placed a small order with Marathon, which they dispatched the same day. Unfortunately Royal Mail are delaying that one, as they are with my latest Jaycotts order.
Has anyone experience with Marathon threads to say whether they are worth purchasing as I have a 30 cop order which I need to place somewhere very soon.
Or any suggestions for another manufacturer?

Go back to basics. Check that the needle is correctly seated, or better still fit a new one. Make sure you have the same weight thread in the bobbin as on top. Remove, clean and retread the bobbin. Retread the upper thread ensuring that you follow the correct path and pass between the discs of the tension unit. When rethreaded, gently pull the upper thread through the needle. You should feel a slight resistance and should see a slight deflection (bending) of the needle, just 1 or 2mm at the tip. No deflection? Increase top tension. Excessive deflection, reduce tension. Finally put some fabric under the needle and lower the presser foot. Make sure you can pull the fabric towards the back of the machine but not towards the front. Increase or decrease presser foot pressure as necessary. Make sure the needle is not in the fabric for this test. Hopefully this will cure your problem.
Report back if you still have difficulty. Good luck.

A quick update here. My old NV1250 is off to a new life stitching wedding embroidery and our new Stellaire is back from it's trip to the vets.. My good lady has been merrily stitching away and now under lock down it rarely gets chance to cool. In order that she can share her designs now that we don't get visitors I have set up a website for her, which I thought I would also share with you good people.
The address is www.wychallembroidery.com
Hopefully it may cheer people up in these dark times.

Hi @Gittje. Thank you for your compliments.

I'm not much of a sewist but I do make sure to use each one of them every couple of months to keep them going. They have each been stripped and cleaned, then adjusted to work correctly. The Futura is used almost daily by my daughter, as is my 6104 which she keeps at her home.
