I saw this & I thought you may be interested! / Re: Mantua maker

I remember having to do a sample of a mantua makers seam.  I’d never heard of it at the time.

I’ve found some buttons for my coat.  Not exciting but they should be dark enough.

Such a shame the fabric isn't very hard wearing, @Ohsewsimple. That's the reason I stopped knitting with superwash merino. Lovely and soft but was always badly pilled before I'd even cast off.

Such a shame isn’t it @Ouryve ?
Some years ago I bought some beautiful yarn to knit a cardigan.  But despite several attempts with this stuff it always looked naff and bitty even while I worked with it.  So I gave it up and put it away in a sulk.  During the pandemic I got this yarn out, undid what I had knitted, wound it, wet and dried it so it was kink free and crocheted up a cardigan with it.  Turned out lovely!   Go figure.

Ohsewsimple’s entry number 2

Same pattern , different fabric.  I think the cuffs ended up slightly smaller than the grey one.  I sewed them on , didn’t like them, cut them off, made them smaller as they were too loose  and resewed them.
This fabric is from Lamazi and is their Snug viscose sweater knit. Again very cosy although I’m not sure how well this is going to wear.  It’s already showing some signs of pilling.  :(

Both cardigans sewn on overlocker and coverstitch machines.

Ohsewsimple’s entry number 1

Cardigan from self drafted pattern.  I took another self drafted cardigan pattern with a V neck.  I lowered the armhole slightly and did a drop shoulder alteration about 1.5cm.  The original pattern was hemmed at the sleeves.  This one has cuffs added. The front band is also wider than the original. And they are cut across the fabric rather than down.
Because of my rounded back and short neck I find straight bands can be a problem.  So this one I joined at the back on an angle and it’s worked well.
The fabric is a sparkly chunky sweater knit with viscose from Dalston Mills.  It’s very cosy and comfy.

I had a couple of things to do first.  Then I spent some time looking at buttons online.  I’d been through my box of buttons but had nothing that will work for my coat.  And I couldn’t find anything online either.  Probably too picky.
Spent the rest of the afternoon knitting.

Thanks, yes you’re right, I think it’s me being less confident but I have a lot of knowledge around amending patterns but think it puts me off. I just need to get on with it. :)

@Clduk i have so many alterations that are needed for commercial patterns it drives me nuts.  If it was just length adjustments I’d be happy.  Most of my patterns are me made nowadays.  It means I can take an existing pattern and chop it and change it to get another one and know that it’s going to fit with minimal adjustments.

If you need help with fitting just put up some piccies and people will chime in to help.   :)

Fun with Fabric / Re: Memory hole

Wash away stabiliser or soluble @jen. Make sure you get the fabric type if you just want to be left with the stitching.

Thought I would get my coat finished but that’s not going to happen.  Not going to rush and ruin it.
Later I’ll put up my cardigans instead.

Absolutely @Tamnymore.  But it saved me some money.  Ok I lie it didn’t because I bought something else as well.

Yes @Celia the south is really a desert as far as fabric is concerned.
I’ve used Pound Fabrics too.  I blame @Tamnymore for that.   But it was her talking about getting the same fabric for less that now has me hunting.  I got some jacquard knit from them for £5 a metre as opposed to £17 a metre!

Patterns Discussion / Re: upper bust measurement question
« on: February 24, 2024, 22:53:23 PM »
@RachelB if the pattern is drafted for a B cup then yes the upper bust or chest measurement will be approximately 2” smaller than the full bust measurement.  This does not mean that the pattern will measure that amount.  There has to be some wearing ease so that you can breath and move.  So measuring a pattern may not help you.
If you know a pattern is designed for a B cup and you only have the full bust measurement then subtract 2” to give you the upper bust measurement.

Great coat @Tamnymore.  I don’t understand coats with no buttons either.  Unless it’s a very lightweight summer duster type.
