Fun with Fabric / Sewing tulle and silk
« on: January 17, 2019, 09:46:21 AM »
My dearest daughter is going to be bridesmaid for my son's wedding in late May.  She will be about 37 weeks pregnant, and needs an outfit.
The little darling has asked me if I can make her a wrap around skirt - ok, I though, probably.  then she sent me pics of ideas.  NO, I don't sew tulle and silk etc!  Or do I?
How difficult are they to sew, should I try, bearing in mind my username  0_0

Patterns Discussion / Pattern for a smocked baby dress or romper suit
« on: November 30, 2018, 09:54:10 AM »
Can anyone help with a search for a pattern please?
When my daughter was little (she's now 35, so a little while ago!), I made a few smocked dresses for her.  I remember the pattern had a transfer sheet of lots of dots, which I then followed to do a hand sewn smocking design.
Are there still patterns like this available?  A quick look didn't bring any up.

Sewing Machines / Blind hemmer
« on: November 17, 2018, 12:04:30 PM »
Just had an email about this - linky - Do I need one?  I'm thinking the answer is no, as I tend to mainly sew jersey/stretch fabrics, so use my cover stitch for hems... but it does seem cheap... no, I really don't have room for it either!
Out of interest, does any one have one or has anyone used one?  Waddya think of them?

In the wardrobe / RTW stretch top with woven lining
« on: October 20, 2018, 08:38:34 AM »
I've bought a top (this one) that has a woven cotton under layer/lining.  This lining is sewn into the neck and armhole seams.  The problem I have is that the non-stretch makes it a bit tight across my upper back.  I'm trying to find an easy solution and I'm not planning on unpicking the armhole seams.  My though was to simply cut a vertical "slash" from just above the waist to the neckhole, and overlock the edges, with maybe a small reinforcing patch at the bottom of the slash.  This would give the required ease, and it's inside so not visible.
Or maybe I should add an insert where I cut it?
Does anyone have any other solutions?  I really do not want to be spending much time on this, so the simpler the better.

... please?  They all have a "new" tag on them, but they are not new.  I'm afraid I do not commit thread titles to memory, so get (unreasonably!) irritated when I click on thread and find, oh, I've already read this one and wasn't interested, and it's not a "new" thread at all.
Please?

The Haberdashery / Which thingummyjig for threading elastic?
« on: August 25, 2018, 13:56:32 PM »
This time I sewed the casing too narrow for one of my trusty 38-year-old nappy pins to thread the elastic through, so I looked for a threading tool - there are a few different types it seems, so any recommendations please peeps?

Edit again:  It seems the two new patterns I wanted (V9335 & V9332) are not available.  :'(

The Haberdashery / Cheap cutting boards
« on: August 08, 2018, 11:28:27 AM »
If I'm to get on with binding armholes and neckholes, I need to be able to cut the strips easily.  I'm currently using a cutting ruler with a built in cutter (I'm sure they have a name, but it escapes me at the moment!),  but it's only 24" long and my mat is also a bit small.
I'm looking to get an A1 size mat, but some are horrendously expensive, will a cheaper one do?  And are there longer built-in-cutter-ruler-thingies available?  I'm really rubbish with a rotary cutter, I can veer off and up and over a ruler really easily  :o

I hate putting binding on - I hate cutting it and the way it starts to curl in, I hate trying to decide what length to use and then having to do lots of pinning - and I still haven't practised with my binding attachment for the coverstitcher,   I have tried a sort of shell stitch over a very narrow hem that works ok, but looks a bit too fussy possibly.  So does anyone have any alternative quick and dirty edge treatments?  Not necessarily "correct" methods, but quick bodges?  Please?  :)

A bit of a 'do' / Mother of the Groom
« on: June 09, 2018, 20:23:28 PM »
Yes, my son has got engaged, yay  0_0
No idea when the wedding will be yet, although I'm guessing it won't be too long (and no, she isn't pregnant, poor thing has all sorts of "womens problems").
So, an outfit will be needed - I reckon it could be my favourite pattern Vogue 9112, but I will wait and see when it is before thinking about fabric.
Or I may just go and buy something...

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Pattern storage - show us yours...
« on: June 07, 2018, 17:30:39 PM »
How do you all store your sewing patterns?  I've been looking for some boxes, plastic storage or anything the right size, but failing.  I'm at the stage of thinking cardboard box and sticky back plastic, but I'm sure someone has a better idea...
Ideally I want them to stand upright and the container not have a lid, so they are easy to look through.

As I was hemming a jacket, I remembered I have a couple of "down turn fellers" for my coverstitch machine - and it was time I actually used them.  I normally bodge it (no surprise there then!) and just turn the hem under as I go, which mostly works, but using this gadget was brilliant, but I must change needles and use the right and centre, not the centre and left as it's left a bit of an edge on the inside, but I have scissors.

If you have a coverstitcher and don't want to spend ages preparing hems, then I recommend one of these  0_0

Technical Help / Help please, I'm hanging wonky...
« on: May 31, 2018, 11:41:11 AM »
What is going on here???  I lay it flat and the zip looks like it's in ok, but put it on, and it hangs all wonky.  Pleased does anyone have any ideas??  Or should I just thread some elastic through the hem and pull the whole lot in a bit?

Edit:  It'd help if I put the pic in  :|
