Title: Four Patch Chain
Post by: Pearl on November 29, 2017, 09:42:51 AM
Well, there is only one more session of my Four Patch Chain BOM class.  In last week's class, my classmates were putting on their borders and basting, while I was finishing the last of my blocks.  I fell behind when I missed a couple of classes early on and never really caught up but now the end is in sight.

Today I am going to piece the sashing.  The first instruction is cut 124 triangles and I've done that!

I'm starting this thread in the hope that it will spur me on.

Here is one of the blocks.  They are all made with Marti Michell's templates (never again!).

Hope you catch up and finish and this public declaration spurs you on :)
I'm interested in your comment about the templates (can you expand?) - I thought they were supposed to make it easier etc once you had swallowed or ignored the cost. I don't do enough P&Q to justify templates but equally I am put off by hours of fiddly cutting!
Can we see some more pics please?

That's lovely Pearl, I admire your dedication. Templates are far too fiddly for me

Thanks, Low.  You think templates are too fiddly for you?  Yes, me too!   :D

Maximum, the templates do make the cutting more accurate, but they are very fiddly.  If I were to make anything with so many parts again (I won't), I'd use FPP.  Some of the blocks have (for example) flying geese.  I have a preferred method for making them which doesn't involve cutting and piecing lots of triangles.  There are 14 different templates and 9 different fabrics.  :o :S :P

Here is block 2.  I'll take more later.

I have a set (or two) of Marti Mitchells templates when I had delusions of making a Storm at Sea quilt, but I too find them fiddly! I would rather cut using my rulers.
The SAS triangles are what led me to buy the templates but now I think PP might be the way forward with a SAS quilt.

If you want to try the templates out, I would be happy to sell them ... they are basically unused.

Nice blocks btw Pearl, can't wait to see the whole lot together!

Thanks for the explanation about templates! I'll keep my £ for something else.
Love block 2 and interested to see the final assembly.

They are looking great Pearl, and I agree about the templates. I only bought one set of the Marti Mitchell templates, for a double wedding ring quilt. I got as far as a couple of bed runners and couldn't stand any more fiddling round with them! They do fit together beautifully, but OMG, the faffing about makes it so tedious. Give me rulers any day.

Iminei, you're quite right, the storm at sea is a piece of cake with paper piecing, and could probably be done with rulers if you are good at accurate cutting and piecing.

Finally finished cutting the 774 pieces needed for the sashing and have begun to stitch them together again.  Madness.  Putting it away until after Christmas.

Storm at Sea can definitely be done with rulers!
