A bit of a 'do' / Re: Impossible wedding dress alteration
« on: December 01, 2021, 19:28:46 PM »
How would it look with vertical gathers to pull up the front. Probably not very good I imagine.

Isn't this an occasion for "No, I can't do this"?

I am going to make a pair of cords/jeans, a jacket and a top.

The dark purple us a stretch corduroy for the trousers and the lighter purple a lightweight demin which is too thin I think for jeans but I have enough to make a jacket and. T-Shirt.

I cut out a pair of jeans and practiced top-stitching.  Unfortunately life has got in the way since then.

I would just love to re-produce some of the embellishments (and I think @Aunty Stitches has done some lovely stitching), but I don't know which book to buy.

I don't need all the patterns as I've got things that I have self drafted and/or tweaked for years.  But I would like the outlines for the reverse appliques, and the grids for the stitches.

Can anyone who has the books suggest which one (not ones hopefully) I need?

Access All Accessories / Re: Mask pouches
« on: January 12, 2021, 12:51:08 PM »
I must be doing something wrong - We're still using the masks we had in Bali back in March. Are we supposed to change them ?

I've been wearing the ones I made back in March. I know we're not supposed to re-use disposable ones (but I know some people who are using the same disposable mask they bought months ago,  :x but I've not read anything about replacing simple fabric ones.  I just wash them in boiling water after each days' wear.  They still look fine, but I've not really had need to wear them much.

Although now I'm wearing them to walk around the block I suppose they may get tatty more quickly.

In the wardrobe / Demin for jeans
« on: December 31, 2020, 11:31:12 AM »
Hi all,

I am thinking I may enter the jeans challenge in February. I doubt I will be out of Tier 4 by then so will need to buy everything online, including fabric.

I have absolutely no stretch fabric to use for a toille, so want to buy cheap denim with the hope of making a wearable toille that I can wear around the house if it's not good enough to be seen in public. I will probably use the ginger jeans stretch pattern. The demin has to be black!

What do you think of this?

Any better suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi, I'm new... / Re: Hello

Welcome.

It sounds as if we won't need to encourage you to have multiple machines.  But, we don't know the size of your fabric stash. We warned, I never had a stash until I joined the predecessor of this forum.

This was made out of stretch velvet with a silver pattern.

I reduced the length of the arms from the shoulders (in effect cutting a size six at the shoulder line) as that meant I could squeeze this out of 1.25m of quite narrow fabric (I have very short arms).

I like it, don't really love it. Its an easy make though as I did it all in the coverstirch and overlocker.

Sorry, but noone around to take a photo of me wearing it - and I've not washed my hair in days!

In the wardrobe / Re: Skirt Dilemma - Which One Do I Make?
« on: November 25, 2020, 16:10:33 PM »
At risk of sounding negative I think both of those would look best on someone very tall but I do prefer the first one

This. I am a couple of inches taller than you and I find any skirt with horizontal seams seams very unflattering.

I also prefer the first one.

In the wardrobe / Re: It seems I have a very short waist...

I would be inclined to find a simple dress pattern for a woven fabric and try making it up in cheap fabric - an old sheet would do. That's what we call a toille. You can the. See how it fits in real life and play around with it until it fits. You then have a idea of the kind of alterations you will probably always need to make.

I would fi d something with a waistline, set in sleeves and a reasonably high neck.

We will offer advice and cheer you on until you get the perfect fit.

Tinky means "boss" in teenager/games-speak I believe.

I interpreted the name as boss andy.

Or something to do with teletubbies.

Sewing Machines / Re: need help selecting a sewing machine for wife
« on: November 11, 2020, 19:56:35 PM »
Why not take her to a real shop before Christmas if lockdown loosens (make an appointment now).

On Christmas Day give her a box of sewing stuff - which she will need to go with the machine, so you need to budget for them for her to start this new hobby.

If that's a good idea we can give you a list.

Yes, this is the prima pattern. I can wear this version quite comfortably over both a long-sleeved t-shirt and a long-sleeved jumper.

It's a cardigan Jim, but not as we know it, not as we know it.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

This is made up of fabric stash left over from making a dress and a top!  Bought the fabric back in the days when fabric came from shops and you bought when you were there and saw something you liked.  I think I had intended to make a dress with a full skirt and a jacket.  It's a fine fabric with a reasonable stretch.

Anyway.  It's not really a cardigan, and it's only half done, but as no-one else has posted here I thought I'd start.

I didn't have enough fabric to make it even as long as the shortest length; but I did have lots of odd bits that have turned into the frills you see; no frill at the back as I cut enough for that to be the right length.  The one cuff is hemmed with a narrow hem, and hopefully when I hem the bottom the cuff and the bottom will be at the same level when my arm is done.

Problems; this is too big, although it's a 12, the size they recommended, I'll cut a 10 next time, or smaller, unless I'm using a thicker fabric.  It's a nice quick make (if you're not doing frills!) if in an easy fabric.  I like it as a quick make; not sure I love it as the back is a bit baggy.  It would be nice with a belt perhaps.

I've got other fabric that I was going to make this up in. I'll probably do so, as otherwise it will sit in stash for yonks and I could do with an easy cover-up.

No help I think with you folks using thicker, proper cardigan fabric.

House Beautiful / Re: Now that i’ve bought my first needle.....

Hi Gavin,

I just read your posts and realised you'd asked a few questions that haven't been answered.

So, sewing machines use, err, sewing machine oil.  You will find that among all the packages of stuff that you didn't think you needed in the haberdashery department.  Or possibly in your wife's sewing box; it is pretty generic stuff that comes in a flat plastic bottle.  It's not used by modern machines (don't ask me why!) but is still readily available.

I've found a similar backwards and forwards inconsistency with sewing textured leatherettes.  It seems to be whether the texture stops the "fabric" feeding evenly.  There are a few solutions for this:

- sprinkling the fabric with talcum powder.  I've never tried this as it just didn't seem a good idea
- use of a plastic foot designed for leather - solves the problem if the problem is with the foot
- placing tissue paper above and underneath the stitching line, and ripping it off after stitching.

I suspect you've diagnosed the thread problem correctly, but you might try losening the tension on the bobbin holder.
