Title: Bound versus Piped
Post by: Ellabella on April 16, 2017, 09:31:10 AM
I've just attempted my first bound buttonholes and am not happy with the result.  I followed the instructions in my Alison Smith book but I can't get the ends to look neat.

I then checked out a couple  of other methods which use two separate pieces of fabric rather than a single one and these seem easier to get right, less tension on the corners.

Is there any benefit to using the one piece method?

I recommend the piped method as ably demonstrated on this old BBC video

I blogged about my efforts using it...

Oh the Goddess that is Ann Ladbury!

Thanks DF, tried this this afternoon and it worked a treat, much better than a bound one and much easier to get a neat finish.

It's quite a revelation isn't it? I couldn't manage the faff with the one piece binding, you can get really narrow with this method.  I need to practise getting a neat finish on the back though...

Mine's going to be well hidden by a facing thankfully.

It gives a much better finish than the one piece of fabric method.
