Stars have been compared to Diamonds throughout Millennia,
but as there are many colours of stars in the sky
why compare them only to Diamonds ???

So this year I'm hosting ...

A Sparkling Stars Mystery Quilt Sewalongathon .. 

Think of it as a BOM with an agenda!

There will be SIX Gemstone Blocks, posted at 6 weekly intervals
from the end of January to end of August,
giving you ample time to gather your fabrics and make your Stars!

The techniques used throughout the Sewalongs will be fairly simple
and there are Tut's available in The Darkside Tutorials if you need to refresh your memory.

This Mystery Quilt comprises a 5 by 5 grid of 12" (f) blocks
to make a finished quilt of 60" sq,
before any added borders or sashing.

You can of course make it smaller or even larger if you wish.

This Mystery Quilt will require ONE consistent background fabric
and a different Gemstone colour each month ...
within which there will be between 3 - 6 different shades.
(I'm not so good at the Maths but a 1/4 metre of each gemstone colour/shade should do the job)

Please do read right through the instructions before you begin to cut into your fabric!

Block 1
will be published on the 30th January and I look forward to seeing you then.

I'd suggest a pure colour; black if you must or a very, very dark blue/red/green/grey/purple or a bright white !

I was thinking grey, then i thought pale grey, then I thought something else.

How much yardage would you think? I don't want to be in the position I have been (still am) with BOM quilt of running out of fabric

@Puzzler  ... Not very hard I think ... but it would make things more fiddly .... The 2nd block is based on an 8x8 grid which is 1 1/2" finished in the 12" block ! Go on, I Dare You  :devil:  !!!!

@Bjay  ... I think 3 ms will do it, but that includes a 3 1/2 border all round.... But Im sorry I really don't know ...

School??? did I really ever go ????? :thinking:

They really are quite simple and traditional star blocks so there must be measurements for a 6" size!

I could  post cutting measurements for a 6" version on the first page of each Blocks thread and leave it to you to work  out ... they are after all only squares, HST's, QST's FG's etc .... but  the tuts will be for larger size.

My OH acts as if he's not interested I. Quilts  :scream: but this subject has him looking up colours of jewel stones for this quilt

I have no  doubt once the sewing begins he will be back to grunting!

Hmm, interesting - as a lapsed Darksider I hight just have enough colours in the stash to do this. Would have to buy the background though. This could get me back down the rabbit hole again. Won't have any flamenco orders again this year, so I have to do something!

So I went to the nearest patchwork shop today - that'd be Perpignan - 70 kms to find they'e gone over to furnishing fabrics  :rant: So I drove back into town to the other sewing shop that used to have a great range and they are down to 20 boards! Arghh. No more shops. Anyway I managed to come up with 3 metres of dark anthracite for the backing - I really didn't want black and so it was that or brown - no way Jose. I bought a few of the remaining bits - minimum cut  half a yard - grrr and came away with an €88 hole in my pocket. I'm going to have to scrounge from the depths of stash - I can't afford any more fabric this month - oh the month ends in a couple of days!!

Using. @Sandra idea I will be using the following stones
Garnet but may change that to peridot
Diamond
Pearl (tricky)
Sapphire
Turquoise
And of course Ruby who h fits very well with family connections
I would like to add amethyst because I like the colours so will see how it will fit in

You also have a Pearl for June. Same as my Dad. I don't know what colours I'd use for that.

If you google hard enough, I found it also states Alexandrite or Light Amethyst. Might be an easier option to find fabrics for and then you'll be able to get some of the lovely amethyst purpley colours included.  :thumbsup:

I too thought of marrying the colours to the months they would be BOM's .... but dont get too hung up on it!

Pearl and Jade would be nigh on impossible to translate into a faceted gem, even diamond is difficult because of the myriad white/greys needed ...

and we ARE making traditional patchwork blocks so you cant add thousands of facets like some of those fantastic gemstone quilts that were shown at Festival or designed my MJ Kinnman (https://mjkinman.com/)

So dont worry about a bit of poetic license ... choose your favourite colours, what you can get enough shades of ... or already have in your stash ...

As you can see @Catllar  My background is a gorgeous Hand dyed Charcoal from Farne Fabrics that I actually did have in my stash!!!!

I was thinking choosing colours rather than sparkly facets. I saw some pearly sort of fabric yesterday but can't order yet
I will probably change Garnet to similar to Ruby for peridot as that also has a connection to the person

My thoughts are
Ruby - red
Saphire - royal blue
Emerald - green
Amathyst - purple
Aquamarine - cyan blue
Citrine (or yellow diamond) - lemon yellow

Together with cream to represent pearls, or if you can find a glittery cream fabric it could be opal.

You could always make yours 3 blocks by 3 blocks if the 5x5 will be too big for you?

These are the colours I think I might use. It's early days so there could be some changes.
Obviously, we don't yet know how many shades we need for each gem colour so I've grabbed anything out of my stash which looks suitable.

Loving the yellows, going lime with the Dark green as accents, reds look good too ...

I think the dark Blues need a bit of light injected into them maybe take a bit from the lighter blues and the purples look great. Im going to struggle with Sapphire as well, I have loads of gorgeous Darks but not so many lights!

Its all about lights and darks ... Maybe bring up some pics of real gems on your laptop and look at the kinds of colours involved ... you might be surprised... But if there is a flash of (for instance) dark green in a Citrine, or Violet in a Sapphire ... make sure you reserve that colour for the smallest units within the block!

But in the end its just about the sense of gemstones ...

My background abric has arrived. It is nothing like I thought and I really, really don't like it :scream:

Edit: I have now contacted Doughty's and they do have a  problem with the pictures on the tone on tone . I am sending the fabric back and we will come to an 'agreement' about another choice if I can find one  :'(

SO I was happily sewing up my blocks  - tum ti tum - when I thought it'd be a good idea to run a ruler over them to see how much trimming would be needed -and in fact I was 1/4" off so have spent the afternoon unpicking and restitching. Sigh. Obviously my idea of scant is larger than usual!

But Bravo you! (my blocks are always an 1/8th or so shy of 12 1/2")

Just be aware that if all your joins are a bit off 1/4", it will make a difference if there are different numbers of joins in parts of the block.  Imagine four squares in a strip and then a straight piece alongside them.  You will lose/gain 3 times on the squares and none on the straight piece. Other blocks will have differing numbers of joins in various parts and the designer allows for the joins in the cutting.

I think that should work with the jewel tones.  The fabric I pulled yesterday is mostly my own hand dyed fabrics which I've had in the stash for over 12 years ... the last time I dyed I think.  Plus a few random purchased batiks.  Can't really start until my fabric arrives.

I'll need the time as the first block seems to have a lot of pieces.

So I made this block but am now confused.  I didn't realise I had to make 3 or 5 the same.  I thought (wrongly) that the star @Deafoldbat put up was the next one.  Am I right to think they are not connected?  I don't have enough of the background fabric and can't get any more as I bought in France 3 years ago :thinking:

The colour is washed out on the pic, the background is a pale sage green and the pinks are deeper in colour.

The Mystery Quiltalongathon needs multiples of each block to assemble into a gorgeous quilt ..
They will be released every SIX weeks giving ample time to source your fabrics

You need ONE consistent background fabric and a selection of coloured fabrics each 6 weeks ... 1st was Ruby ... Next will be

Those look so good.
To try to calm down the bg fabric I thought I may go for a block colour for the sashing in same grey shade.

Block 3 will be a peridot - fits with using family birthstones

Can I ask what thickness of wadding is best for this quilt.  I have 100% cotton but it seems quite thin?

Wadding is of course a personal preference but in my opinion 100 % cotton is ideal ... its the layering that makes a quilt  warm. If you want 'puff' or 'high loft' please go for the poly alternative.

Thanks @Iminei I do like the 100% cotton but when I see other peoples quilts it appears puffier and mine looks thinner.  They have a free p&p today on sewing street tv and they have wadding so I will check their prices.  I want to make sure I have enough to complete this mystery quilt  :)

I wondered what @Lowena meant by 'piggies' i imagined it was pigs stitched to the quilt and the poly wadding is puffier than the cotton.  I think 80/20 is 80% cotton - 20% polyester  :)

Just finishing off Aunt J's quilt and I have realised just how big this will be :facepalm:

If you dont add any borders or sashing this will be 60" sq for the 5 x 5 grid ...you can of curse make it smaller ... or bigger!

Its up to you ... I find a 60" quilt is fine to quilt as one ...
but if you choose to add sashing you can always QAYG, using the sashing strips as joining strips and quilt it in 2, 3, 4 or 5 sections.

Hi Peeps, well my blocks are complete and I have decided what to do as a backing ...

Im going to make ONE more of each block and use them in a pieced backing .... I'll make them only from the Tutorial instructions so hopefully will find any discrepancies.. I just hope I have enough fabrics left!!!

Im, as Ive said previously, sashing my blocks so will probably QAYG in two pieces ... I will post a short tutorial or (more likely) a post showing the finished article.

For those of you awaiting the final block, Block SIX , it will be released into the wildes of The Darkside on Saturday 28th August.

I hope you have been following and enjoying these tutorials and in September will finish a beautiful quilt! xxx

 I have been sewing the columns together and am pleased .... not so pleased with The Splurgess however who seems to have developed a problem with the foot pedal ...  :facepalm:

I'm happily sewing along and suddenly it all stops ... Warning sign flashes up and the only way to continue is turning it off and on again, which means I then have to reset it to the 1/4" quilt stitch ... A giant PITA ... so after two columns I have packed away ... Looking good though.

Im sure its just a loose connection in the foot ... :thinking: ... but not sure whether Im brave enough to delve into that ... yet!

Still I gave her a really good clean this afternoon ... and Boy did she need it!  :scream:

They look wonderful @Iminei I have just one more block 5 to make.  I will try laying them out to see what they look like.  It's getting exciting and I am a bit nervous about getting them all together.  It will be the first time I have made anything as big as this. I already bought the backing and fabric for the binding, I need the wadding now but don't know what weight to get, I want this to fit my bed and be nice and cosy  :faints:

I'd also thought of laying them out when have finished the last Emerald as now looking forward to finished product. Like @Lilian I have already bought backing fabric and 2 lots of sashing but not sure, which to use yet

By the way Girls, when you take your pics try and get a pic right over the top of your block (if on a table) or pin it to the wall/corkboard/wallhanging etc ... That way you can get a decent pic.

The instructions in the photo gallery seem to make sense so the challenge would be whether I can actually follow them correctly to produce the blocks.
I think I could.
And it would be a good learning exercise for me to try a different sewing technique (away from my usual garment sewing).

Yesterdays progress on the Mysteryquiltalongathon was slow and disorganised as I realised I was fast running out of Bg fabric for the sashing strips!  :scream:

I spent a lot of the day scrabbling around for odds and sods of this irreplaceable Farne fabrics Hand dyed Grey No.4 cotton.

I calculated I needed twenty-four 12" strips and had 18 at last count. I then found a small coil of strips so now ... I think ... I have just got enough.

Today Im going to be way more organised. I will be having another problem too I have saved 3" strips of the Bg fabric for the border but at 54" wide I dont think the four strips plus odds and sods will be enough  :facepalm: in fact I know they wont so some design flair might be needed ...

I can either halve the 3" strips after which I will have more than enough or ??????

I really did want a nice wide border.

OK so I've finished all the blocks ( will put the final one in the gallery when I can find the mental strength and fortitude to struggle with the doodad) and I'm wondering what happens now? Do we fling them together in gay abandon or do we follow the amazingly detailed instructions from @Iminei for a construction?  :thinking:

 I'm asking because I'm not a maths person but even I can see that 3 and 4 blocks don't make a regular 5 x 5 ( even thought they all add up to 25 blocks - see, not such a numpty)

Im not going to make you a tutorial on putting this together, but I will show you the design for the quilt layout plus some commentary.

Its up to you to decide whether you want sashing or not; I wanted to give a couple of my gemstones a bit more space and just about got away with the ever decreasing Bg fabric (only one sash is pieced)

BUT Im going to have to cut my borders down as I have Four 3" strips of 52" long which will not make a border for a 64" sq Quilt! :rolleyes:  :facepalm:  Unless I play clever buggers, ideas of which are at the moment completely eluding me.

If you do choose to sash you could QAYG and use the sashing strips as joining strips

Sashing = width of block x width of desired space between blocks

I cut mine 12 1/2" (wob) x 1 1/2" ( for a 1" finished sash between blocks)

What would everyone like me to do ... wait until a set time for the Big Reveal ... say the Beginning of October??

Or email you privately with the layout, under terms of strict secrecy,  when you have finished the blocks to prevent you having to wait unnecessarily ??

Assembly has stalled on mine as my foot pedal well truly died (tho' I think it was pushed  >:) ) and Im hoping the new one will be here by the weekend when I will finish the top and start the layering.

Also still havent thought of a way to stretch four 54" x 3" strips to border a 64" sq quilt ... Without halving them lengthwise of course

Any suggestions ????????  :thinking:

Personally I reckon it's a lot simpler for you to do one reveal- you do have  a life outside TSP and faffing about with oneatatime emails will take a lot of it. Just my thought. :D

The Reveal is set for Sunday 3rd October!

Mine wont be quilted (or even layered and backed by then) but it is pieced and I will be changing the pieced border that Im so unhappy with to one I am happy with.

I am preparing to bind my quilt. I watched a video from Missouri Quilting, she started by stitching the binding to the back of the quilt so that it was easy to see where to stitch on the front.  Is this a good way to bind a quilt?

2 1/2" cut ??/ Pfff! Phoeey ... lets have a 5" cut one!!!

Stitch a 1/4" from the raw edges ?? Balderdash ... Lets make that an inch!!!

From the back ! Raspberry blown at that .. lets stitch it to the front!!!!

Your quilt ... Your binding!

The things you have to think about are ...

Are there any blocks whose points will be cut off ? If so, stitch to the front at a distance that misses all those precious points and turn to the back.

If you want a thin binding Front to back ... the bigger portion will be on the back
if you want a wider binding Back to front

Are you handstitching it down .. either side the hand stitches dont go all the way through the quilt ..

If you're machine stitching it down you need to think about the fact that the stitching will show on the other side of the quilt ... if its going to be seen on a plain border No Problem ... across blocks maybe you want to stitch it down on the front where you can control where the stitches are placed.

I have already cut the binding 2 5/8th wide and pressed it in half.
I can't handstitch so will be machining it. There is one quilted star that comes close to the edge. I have a double border so the blocks are all safe.  Will have a think :thinking:

I machine stitch the front edge (3" strip folded in half ) then hand stitch the back. I don't like the stitches to show on the front.
I think that stitches that show through, especially decorative ones smack of overkill and gilding the lily.       However........,.
