Title: Block 1 - The RUBY Star
Post by: Iminei on January 30, 2021, 09:43:17 AM
Welcome to the
Very First Mystery Quiltalongathon Block for 2021 ...

This year, after the great success of last years QAYG BOM,
I decided to combine the BOM with a finished article,

A Mystery Quiltalongathon !!

A BOM with an agenda !!!

but here's a clue, I've called it
The Sparkling Stars Quilt

I thought as Stars are so often referred to as Diamonds
I would assign a different Gemstone to each Block.
and try and convey a sense of that jewel with my choice of fabrics .......

You can follow my choice of gemstone for each star ...
or choose your own according to the fabrics you have to hand

So for the VERY FIRST BLOCK of
2021 Sparkling Stars Mystery Quiltalongathon

We have

The RUBY STAR
Ruby Star Tutorial (https://photos.app.goo.gl/HXb9v9ddd5j6Gjh58)

As ever,
Click on the first pic to bring it up to Full size
and then on the i Icon (top right corner of the pic on a laptop)
to bring up the instructions to the side of the pic.

 Do read right through the tutorial before you start to cut and sew !

Block TWO will be released on Saturday 13th March

*    *     *     *     *      *

There will be SIX Gemstone Blocks, posted at 6 weekly intervals
from the end of January to end of August,
giving you ample time to gather your fabrics and make your Stars!

You will need to make between FIVE and THREE Blocks for each Star.

The techniques used throughout the Sewalongs will be fairly simple
and there are Tut's available in The Darkside Tutorials should you need to refresh your memory.

This Mystery Quilt comprises a 5 by 5 grid of 12" (f) blocks
to make a finished quilt of 60" sq,
before any added borders or sashing.

You can of course make it smaller or even larger if you wish.

* * * Fabric Requirements * * *

This Mystery Quilt will require approximately 3m's of
ONE consistent background fabric throughout the quilt

and a different Gemstone colour each month ...
within which there will be between 3 - 6 different shades.

(I'm not so good at the Maths but a 1/4 metre of each gemstone colour/shade should do the job)

And everyone who finishes 2021 with a completed quilt
will receive an exclusive
The Sewing Places's Prize Winners Enamel badge or Sew on Embroidered Patch!!!

So do the 5 blocks have to be identical or can they be other ruby colours as well?

Had a good afternoon "playing" in my sewing room. This is the result:

The colours in the photo are a little washed out but it is 4.40pm so the light is fading. ;) I enjoyed the tutorial and will be looking forward to the next one, so thank you @Iminei for taking the time to post this for us Darksiders.

Wow, @Kenora .  You don’t mess about!  Lovely!

I’ve ordered my background fabric and dug out some reds.

I think having a devoted sewing room helps with this.  I no longer have a sewing room  :(

Oh, Kenora...that's gorgeous.  :loveit:

I've ordered background fabric. I'm going for a dark Spraytime, but I haven't looked in my stash yet for 'ruby' or any other colour options.

OK so tomorrow I start. Not sure my reds count as ruby - might have to rethink

I think my colours are more "amethyst" but it's a stone I like so I'll go with that. :)

I think having a devoted sewing room helps with this.  I no longer have a sewing room  :(

I know this to be an absolute fact! I've never had a sewing room. Before they abruptly closed for retirement, lease was being doubled, I would go to the local quilt shop three times a month to sew. During the day it was 10-4, no cost just a reservation, and a Friday night  "Allnighter" from 6 pm to 2 am. That gave me 20 hours a month I knew was committed to sewing. It was fun, I prepped what I could in advance so it was productive. Also I would use their giant cutting tables to cut out garments that I could sew at home in limited space.

My machine has only been out of it's case once since they closed 3 years ago and that was for a similar all nighter the Babylock dealer started to try and fill the void. It was not fun and involved sewing bullies.

@Kenora !!!!!!! WOW !!!! That's Glorious and sooooooo quick !!!!

Aaaand you kick off the MQBOMHOF  (https://photos.app.goo.gl/XXqZo9me5hFdspLk8)...
Off you pop, hopefully you wont have to wait too long before someone else joins you ...

@Bjay  ... Yes, you can use just one set of fabrics for each months block or other similar colours if you wish
BUT the FIVE blocks for this month all need to be colours relating to One Gemstone ...

So all colours relating to ....... Amethyst, Ruby, Turquoise, Sapphire, Amber, Emerald, Aquamarine, Diamond, Opal, Garnet, Citrine etc

Remember YOU  can choose your gemstone for each of YOUR  blocks ...

Just because I made my Block 1 a Ruby ... doesn't mean that yours has to be.

I can't do anything until the background fabric arrives so I've been sort-of planning.

I've been googling images of various gemstones for inspiration, and I think I'd like to personalise mine to my own and my kiddiwinks birth stones. So I'm peridot  :\ my daughter is aquamarine  :) and my son's sapphire  :)  A green/yellow and two blue.
But that only gives me three and I need six. I love  :loveit: the amethyst colours but that's the birthstone for Feb and my ex is Feb.  ><
However...light amethyst is also a birthstone for Gemini/June which is my Dad! Mum is the same month as my son. So now I've got four.

See. I said I'd been planning.

I'm going to grab some bundles of the colours I think I've decided on, and see which other colours might look good with them.
I'm drawn to emerald. Then that gives me two shades of blue, two of green and a light amethyst.

@Kenora  This has only happened by accident. I'm probably over-thinking it and will abandon the plan and use whatever's in my stash.  0_0

@Renegade Sewist  all-nighters - wonderful and could only happen in your part of the world. Shame it had to close.

So I've cut out and  prepped the pieces  of the first set of blocks.

Realised two things - I don't have a 1/4 foot for my old lady so I resorted to a sticky tape seam line on the bed. Works OK for the moment. Secondly I hate cutting into new lengths of fabric  - agues it comes from always having to make my dance costumes from recuperated and pieces of fabric. Really had to put on big girl pants to cut the pristine background fabric I bought.

I've got very few blenders @Pearl and definitely not in a range of shades. My local shop has very little in plains or blenders so I may have to order some from UK. That will take weeks to get here and I may be hammered with import duty as well. Thanks Brexit,  the gift that keeps on giving!

@StitchinTime  thanks for the reminder, I had forgotten that thread. I've had a look at some Spanish sites and been unimpressed, they mostly seem to favour some quite hideous novelty fabrics. I'm also going to check out Myfabrics and the Dutch one to see if they have patchwork fabrics. Failing that, a few small orders from Doughty's when they have sales might be the answer.

My background fabric has arrived as has the pink fabric I order when I saw @Kenora ’s block, although I might use the red fabric I dug out when I saw @fajita’s blocks.  If I wasn’t so easily influenced, I might make a decision or even some quilt blocks.

I'm having difficulty transcribing the instruction for this as I am for 2 of Zeldas quilts on FB.
I have to copy each instructions from my tablet onto paper and it's time consuming and can be confusing.
I do this as I like to listen to audiobooks while I work and  my tablet plays up sometimes going between the two.
Will try to figure out a better way of working
How do you manage?

Oh dear @Pearl
But the cut down large squares are 4.5ins so you may be able to do it, I'm sure you can try.
I've had cutting wars as well, my long ruler has decided to slippy slide despite the stickers so some of the strip were not wide enough.
I have 2 completed blocks  now and enough bits and pieces to do the other 3 provided the rest of the sizes ar accurate.
I have used some of the red bought for Capt America so can't really afford to have to re-cut.

I do know the solution is to purchase a new 24ins riuler but think I have spent enough for now.

I am just starting to make this block :) I have had a problem with my 1/4 inch foot it is not fitting very tightly onto the machine, it swivels a bit which knocks it out of line. I have taken it off and put a normal foot on and moving the needle accordingly which has made it much easier to do  :)

I still haven't cut my squares but am thinking to do it in the next day or two but I'm confused.

The half square triangles start out as 5 3/4" I believe (2 in background and 2 in color)
But what about the small squares.  Do these start off as 2.5" by 11" ??

I'm not a real quilter so I am not up on these things.  Most of my quilts are either squares, 9-patch or log cabin because they're easy.  Sorry for being dense but I'd like to confirm before I cut.  I'm probably only going to have the background and hand-dyed fabric as my stash is too full of novelty prints which won't lend themselves to this type of design.  Or at least I don't think they will.

I usually just cut the sizes I need and not all this sewing of strips followed by cutting into squares so it's hard to visualize.

Thanks for any help.
Title: Re: Block 1 - The RUBY Star
Post by: Pearl on February 26, 2021, 05:46:07 AM
Yes, the small squares start as strips 2.5. X 11.  Two strips are sewn together, then cut into 2.5” pieces (pic 16 in the tutorial).

The best way for you is to follow the instructions step by step almost like a tick sheet rather than thinking too far ahead.
It becomes clearer as you work through it.
Title: Re: Block 1 - The RUBY Star
Post by: Iminei on February 26, 2021, 09:00:10 AM
Hi there @mudcat ... Thank you for taking the plunge and joining in ...
Can I firstly ask, you are bringing up the instructions to the side of each pic arent you???
Of course you are ... right I will try and answer your questions ... and FYI there are NO stupid questions!

The half square triangles start out as 5 3/4" I believe (2 in background and 2 in color)
But what about the small squares.  Do these start off as 2.5" by 11" ??

The 5 3/4" Background (Bg) and colour (C) sqs become Half Square Triangles (HST's) after the first process and are then sewn again to become Quarter Square Triangles (QST's)

You get TWO HSTs ... from One Bg sq and ONE C sq paired up ... You need FOUR QST for each block hence the need for TWO pairs of Bg and C sqs.

I use Strip piecing as a more accurate way of making FourPatches (4Patch) instead of fiddling around with 2 1/2 sqs you make a strip of two fabrics which you can then cut into the units.

In fact I usually cut my strips a lil wider and longer than the required size so that when I join the units together into the 4patch together I can trim to an extremely accurate size.

As you need FOUR 4patches of Bg and C you need a minimum strip length of 10" (4 x 2.5) hence the requirement for a minimum strip of 11" to take into account cuts, squaring up etc

I never, ever recommend cutting out all the fabrics for a quilt in one hit as ... unless you are Wonderwoman ... you then end up with a mountain of cut pieces (that immediately start to fray) and will get completely overwhelmed by the enormity of the task.

For this project I suggest cutting for one block, maybe using gash fabrics  ... going through the process, getting used to the techniques involved and then, if you are happy, cutting for the rest of the blocks required and chain piecing each section as you go.

When I make a tut I make multiple practice blocks as I get used to putting the block together ... in fact for the next block I have at least FOUR finished practice blocks lying around!!!

I'm not a real quilter so I am not up on these things.  Most of my quilts are either squares, 9-patch or log cabin because they're easy.

None of us were (or indeed in my case are!) we all started somewhere ... this is why my tuts are always (I hope) so detailed. I try to take you through each step figuring that if you have some experience of a certain step you can breeze through it but if you havent its spelt out for you as simply as I can make it.

I worry that sometimes I or the tuts can come across as patronising, but really I'm not trying to be ... I just want the instructions to be able to be understood by anyone at any level.

I remember very early on in my days of The Dark Arts trying to follow a step in an online tutorial ad screaming at the girl on my laptop as she breezed through a technique obviously assuming I knew something which I had no idea of....

It was completely frustrating and nearly put me off for life!

And lastly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with simple squares or blocks in a quilt  (https://photos.app.goo.gl/t5AXSsu59X4Qzmmg8)......

@Kenora I think she meant stash not gash!

Thanks @Iminei  for the additional clarification.  I at first didn't see the instructions on the linked tut.  Later I saw if I put my mouse just so they miraculously showed up at the bottom of the screen.

I've made many quilts but I'm not a person who follows some pattern as rule.  I'm just doing this for something different and to use up scraps but I'm not sure that buying three yards for the background color is going to end up in a net reduction in stash.

I've a couple of times made alternating 9-patch and log cabin in the same quilt with coordinating colors.  So mustard/yellow for the log cabins and purple/pink and black for the 9-patch.  But I actually did cut out ALL the squares.  I've never done this strip thing you speak of.  But, I'll give it a try here.  It does seem efficient and possibly fast.

Nope ... although it could be ...

'Gash' fabric ... or anything else for that matter ... means spare or going begging.

In this context it means fabrics that are leftover from another project, that you dont particularly care about and probably dont make a great combination with each other ... just stuff you can practice with.

@mudcat ... some of the destructions are quite detailed so might not fit all of it at the bottom of the pic ...

if you can find an i icon, click on that and it will appear to the side of the pic ... but I think that might just be for laptops ...

I know a lot of you girls view TSP on your mobiles so you might have to vie between two pages .. one pic, one text

I looked it up (although it took a bit of digging to find it) - it would appear that the term was originally used by British military personnel, specifically Navy or Royal Marines.

I first heard it through building ... gash wood .. ie offcuts ... I didnt think it was particularly specialist.

I suppose it was handed down into general use. My grandfather was a RSM in the Marines but I never heard him use the term. I shall have to work it into my everyday language now. :)

Thank you, I was unsure about the lilac colour but think it will work.

Oh @Iminei I couldn't figure out the bit about unpicking to get a super flat block I didn't do that on the trial one, but did it and suddenly realized how it was done. Thank you for that

And a mere 4 months later, I've shown up with a finished block. More may follow.
