Welcome to the
Second Mystery Quiltalongathon Block for 2021 ...

This year, after the great success of last years QAYG BOM,
I decided to combine the BOM with a finished article,

A Mystery Quiltalongathon !!

A BOM with an agenda !!!

but here's a clue, I've called it
The Sparkling Stars Quilt

I thought as Stars are so often referred to as Diamonds
I would assign a different Gemstone to each Block.
and try and convey a sense of that jewel with my choice of fabrics .......

You can follow my choice of gemstone for each star ...
or choose your own according to the fabrics you have to hand


So for the  SECOND BLOCK of
2021 Sparkling Stars Mystery Quiltalongathon

:devil: Do read right through the tutorial before you start to cut and sew !  :devil:

There is A separate Tut for The Fancy Flying Geese component of this block
in the Darkside Tiutorials
and I strongly recommend you try one with gash fabric before you start on the block

Block THREE will be released on Saturday 24th April

There will be SIX Gemstone Blocks, posted at 6 weekly intervals
from the end of January to end of August,
giving you ample time to gather your fabrics and make your Stars!

You will need to make between FIVE and THREE Blocks for each Star.

The techniques used throughout the Sewalongs will be fairly simple
and there are Tut's available in The Darkside Tutorials should you need to refresh your memory.

This Mystery Quilt comprises a 5 by 5 grid of 12" (f) blocks
to make a finished quilt of 60" sq,
before any added borders or sashing.

You can of course make it smaller or even larger if you wish.

This Mystery Quilt will require approximately 3m's of
ONE consistent background fabric throughout the quilt

and a different Gemstone colour each month ...
within which there will be between 3 - 6 different shades.

(I'm not so good at the Maths but a 1/4 metre of each gemstone colour/shade should be ample)

And everyone who finishes 2021 with a completed quilt
will receive an exclusive

Well based on the family birthdays Aquamarine isn't there bUT Turquoise is and the colours are similar.
Fabric sorted out - left overs from the rainbow quilt.
So many colours in that I think I've most jewells covered :dance:

I think the Grey one is a bit off ...

But you have your Dark, Medium and Light just right.
What colour is your background again?

I see why youve chosen the Light grey as I see the flecks of Turquoise in it But I think it reads too Grey to work as the Light or Bright in this ... Which were you going to use it for?

Solved it last night. Often find a photo will point me in right direction ie yes a bit too grey.
Ordered some just a small amount. Didn't mean to but I didn't want to make do either

I'm glad you've said that. I've also done one block. It looks better than I thought it would but I can't say I enjoyed doing it. Thought it might have just been me in a grumpy mood while I was doing it.

I like my fabric choices but they haven't worked as well as I thought they would. A bit 'samey'.
I'm going to need to psyche myself up to tackle the other three.  :meditation:

Yes Darlings I did ask you to practice with some gash for the FFG didnt I?

@fajita  that looks good, apart from as you say the colour choice ...

There's only one fabric astray and its the bright in the FFG ...

I think I know why you chose it, the darkest bits tone in with the lightest bits in the swirly block but it just doesnt quite work.

Maybe try a lilac/purple from the swirly fabric ???

Here's mine. Lovely block. Really like it but didn't enjoy doing it.

Middle's too samey. Should have got a brighter, clearer blue for the centre, but I like it and there's no chance I'll abandon it and redo. No way. This is what it's going to be.

Absolutely! Haven't started yet what with painting the loo etc and making space by trying to finish my 3 piece jacket, but yes, I'm going for it!  Might pull some fabric this afternoon when we get back from the doc ( again!)

@Iminei - definitely! I cut out my fabric the day after you posted the tutorial but I'm still waiting for my dizziness to abate before I can sit at my sewing machine. :S (7 weeks and counting - it's driving me mad.)

@Iminei I will be doing this, just waiting for some red/pinks and some aquamarine fabrics so that I can start.  I have got my BG fabric but ran out of the red/pink when I made the first block so am getting new fabric in.  :)

Well I've really struggled with this. Flying Geese and I do not get on.  I know there re many imperfections in it but can only hope the next ones will be better.

I am enjoying this so far - I've done green rather than aquamarine  and it's all from stuff in the bottom of the box!! Yay!!

@Bjay  these are not just ordinary Flying Geese ... these are Marks and Sparks flying geese ...

I agree with you, they are a lil bugger to get right and in fact I got them wrong so often I decided I preferred them that way and changed the pattern!!

Double in fact ... the woman who designed this pattern changed them to standard flying geese in the end as, I assume, so many other people found it too difficult/complained ... but if you ensure theres a 1/4" gap between the edge of the unfinished block and the 'geese' you get a great shimmery effect and that is precisely what we want!

I just wanted to show how 'off' mine are. (I don't care. They won't be re-done.)
It might help and reassure others who are stressing about their own.

Most of my corner triangly bits are touching where there should be a little gap.  :meditation: It doesn't matter.
And where they're touching, they're not even touching neatly.  :S

@Sandra  yours are how they should be .,.. I couldnt achieve that, no matter how I hard I tried,  so went for the other effect which I prefer ...

The woman who initially put this block out changed her pattern halfway through as so many people were having trouble with the geese ....

After struggling with them for over a week (and countless attempts) I almost blew a fuse when I saw the revised pattern!!! :headbang: :rant: :boohoo:

It's taken me three goes to complete my first block, but at least I have one finished. :) I'm not very happy with the colours - the centre is too dark, and the grey fabric with turquoise flowers looks very "dirty" but I'm not buying more fabric so it'll have to stay as it is.

I've cut out the fabric for the next one of these, so even though it's not very "aquamarine" it will be sewn (at some stage).

That is Spot On ... A perfect Block!

Yes the Dark is a bit too dark , but I wouldnt worry about the grey, theres enough turquoise within to lift it ...
So dont fret about it, when its all together it will look fabulous ... and you've got form in fabulous!!

Thank you @Iminei . Do you have any ideas as to what colour/tone would work in the centre block? I'm useless with colour.

This is my first attempt at the Aquamarine Star.  I was not sure about the light colour but carried on to finish the block. Not all the points seem to match, what went wrong?

That was I think far the most difficult block of the 6 ... because of those pesky geese but you've both managed beautifully

It's an extremely rare stone known as Baby Nappy - but commonly called Green Jade - ???? :thumbsup:

Or Peridot, of course! ( WTF?? Peridot??)  Honestly it's a lot lot brighter than it looks here.

I keep looking at the blocks and thinking " those colours don't look right  - not jewel enough " so I had a search in the box and found - all the fabrics I'd pulled for this block carefully folded together and forgotten about - so I'm going to do them again, in the correct colours - Doh!!

I think I’ve caught up. I have made four blocks for block two and five blocks for block one. I thought that I had a week off and the mystery block three would be available on 24th April?
I find it difficult to get the right shade or colour when ordering fabric online so hoping to get to a shop if I don’t have suitable fabric for the block three.

Louise the next block, block 3 will be released on the 24th .. You are correct .. Im just ahead of myself!

And yes for the 5x5 grid, you need FIVE blocks of Block 1 and FOUR of block 2 ... Block 3 will be another FIVE blocks!

I think Im going to add a thin sashing between the blocks in an effort to keep all those lovely points separate so will be cutting the Long strips and the borders this coming month ... If you add sashing you will also be able to QAYG if you like !!
