House Beautiful / Polycotton voile?
« on: April 12, 2021, 12:59:16 PM »
Several times over the years I've made sheer curtains using a fabric that John Lewis used to sell for this purpose. They also sold ready-mades in this fabric. They discontinued it years ago and I can't seem to find anything else similar. The content was 67% poly and 33% cotton - just enough to make it look and feel less synthetic. It washed beautifully and I did wash the curtains frequently. All I can find now after combing multiple sites is polyester, polyester and more polyester.

This was the stuff. It says to check in-store but I've done that in the past and it was a no go. As I said it has been years since JL had it in stock. https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-dijon-muslin-extra-wide-unheaded-voile-fabric-ecru-w300cm/p231535032

Any thoughts?

Fabrics 1 and 2 have been cut into but I have given you the length of the main, intact section. Prices are exclusive of packaging and postage.

1 Paisley fabric is polyester, silky smooth hand. 130cm wide, 1.25 mtrs in length plus a bit extra - £2

2. Polyester fabric with a fancy bra motif. Very lightweight so would make a cute camisole or negligee (not on me, I'm afraid. Think Benny Hill in drag). 145 cm wide, just under 2 mtrs in length plus a bit extra. £5

3. Red flannel is sold

4. Sheer sequined fabric. Likely polyester. Would make a beach cover-up or similar type item. 140cm wide. 3 mtrs in length. £8

Fun with Fabric / Fleece
« on: November 25, 2020, 07:58:18 AM »
I have a couple of pairs of pj bottoms from Tesco made from fleece from years back. I’d like to make a few pairs but I am not sure about which fleece fabric to buy. The RTW ones are sewn from a smooth, flatter fleece rather than the higher loft, fluffy fleece (but that may be due to their age and umpteen washings).  I don’t actually wear them to sleep, just lounging around the house. Any pointers on suitable fabrics? This may seem obvious but when I search for fleece fabric, there seem to be different types, not to mention prices.

I recently registered with Textile Express so I could get a free fabric sample. I just received the email below. There is nothing to indicate from the main website there is a sale but if you put in the code, I presume anyone could get the discount. I just re-read the blurb. Perhaps the site will change at 5pm today. Get in there first, folks.  :ninja:

Thank you from all of us at Textile Express!
The last few months have been hard for everyone as we all try and adjust in these strange times. All the team at Textile Express would like to say a big Thank You for your support.

From 5pm today we will be offering 20% off all stock items until 9am on Tuesday morning 01/09/20.

The good news is as a subscriber to our newsletter you can start to shop the sale straight away using the discount code BANK20. This is a great advantage in our stock only sale as some items will sell out.

Fun with Fabric / Fabric for summer trousers
« on: May 27, 2020, 14:41:02 PM »
My scrub sewing is come to an end soon so planning some shamelessly selfish sewing.

I am in need of some summer weight trousers as I have put on lbs and many pairs from previous years no longer fit. I don't want anything voluminous but would like them to be drapey rather than skin tight clingy. I will most likely use a Style Arc pattern such as https://www.stylearc.com/shop/sewing-patterns/besharl-pant/. I'd love a pair in a woven viscose print but then I would be stuck for tops. I'm also in need of tops as some of mine are a wee bit snug in the bust but that's for another day.

Any thoughts, Lightsiders? Darksiders welcome to chip in too.
