Patterns Discussion / Re: Price of PDF patterns
« on: August 14, 2019, 22:15:27 PM »
PDFs do have their compensations. I like being able to print only the size(s) I want. Plus some of the indie pattern makers have sewalongs on their websites and I've found them quick to respond to email queries about construction. I know many of you don't need that kind of help but I find having the option useful. Of course some of the indies do print versions as well but most don't and anyway the postage cost rules them out for me.

I  mostly buy indie pdf patterns these days so I'm used to the price and yes, they're not cheap although you can sometimes get a discount when they first come out. I assume they need to charge more because they sell less and you cant really equate them with a global company like Vogue. $30 for the two is £25 which seems about standard.

Well done Efemara. @Manuela for the benefit of those of us with imperfect recall could you please repost the winning image in this thread  :)?

Book is only £20.99 post free on Amazon now. It's not really for me but that sounds a bargain.

All worthy entries so I just voted for the two that grabbed me and made me think "I wish I'd made that". Well done all.

I looked into Bengaline a couple of years ago and noticed that the stuff Style Arc was selling had a high % of viscose, whereas all I could find at the time on UK websites like Minerva was mainly polyester. I'm sure that's moved on now but it put me off. I imagine you get what you pay for.

I've made the Style Arc Elle - also intended for Bengaline - a few times now using various stretch wovens no problem. I got the Barb as a freebie way back but never made it as the Elle shape suits me better.

Access All Accessories / Re: Janome atelier 5 and pleather

Hmm...I tried a variety of (genuine) Janome feet when making my faux leather jacket. I used a Teflon foot for most of it but when that struggled my walking foot worked well so I'm surprised it didn't for you. I did briefly try my roller foot which is often recommended for faux leather - honestly can't recall how effective that was but it's something else to consider.

Also I used a size 14 Jeans needle as recommended by Angela Wolf. That plus Teflon or walking foot worked great for me.

@annieeg looking closely at the pattern model, it looks to me as if her seams fall below the shoulder point too, on the dress anyway. My Angela Wolf Linda tunic was designed like that - not sure if Im a fan of that feature. Either way, you may still want to alter it of course.

Sewing Machines / Re: Very small, light, simple machine

Thanks girls, as always.
No @StitchinTime I don't want to go down that route, but thanks for the suggestion.
@Helen M that's more than I really want to pay. It's only for 3hrs a month and sewing 2 pieces of cotton fabric together.
I don't use a 1/4inch foot on my main machine  StitchinTime so that wouldn't be a problem.

@Lowena I'd be put off buying anything that has so many one star reviews. One of them wondered if some of the five star reviews were fake and looking through the profiles I think they are right. Apparently there's a whole industry around this https://www.which.co.uk/news/2019/01/which-uncovers-fake-five-star-reviews-flooding-amazon/

@StitchinTime 's Singer suggestion looks just the job  :)
