Title: Look what I did!
Post by: Acorn on July 21, 2017, 19:08:42 PM
... that's a general "I", not just me.  I thought with Jo also getting a machine we might need somewhere to post our endeavours, and for other machine embroiderers to share their work too, be it expert or beginner.

These are my first attempts on actual clothing.  The shirt is an old but favourite baggy shirt that I sometimes wear at home in the evenings, so I knew I could still wear and love it if they did go wrong - but thankfully they didn't.   :)

I have also made a rather nice FSL (free standing lace) snowflake to go on the Christmas tree, but it seems to have gone walkabout.

Love the leaves. Where was the design from?

Both are from Urban Threads (http://www.urbanthreads.com/).

The bird is really designed to be done on a dark background in white and two shades of a very pale version of the background colour, which is quite stunning.  I will be using it on denim, I think (after a test).

Oh must check out that site. I made a denim skirt recently with some flower detail from an built in design in my machine but would love something like maybe a dragonfly or peacock to put on some dark purple denim I have in the stash

They are fantastic.  I'm sure I've seen peacocks on there.  This is my latest from them.

I'm not entirely sure what this is, apart from a small bag that will have a drawstring at the top (when I've been shopping), but I think it's probably a present for my Mum.

It's on a slubby fabric that is satin-y on the inside and has a nicer semi-matte finish on the outside.  It took the embroidery beautifully.

That's lovely. I like the mandala style one in particular.

I only managed to do a few tests on some scrap fabric, because I don't have any cut-away stabilizer. And from what I've read, the general consensus is "if you wear it, don't tear it". I did order loads of stabilizer from Doris Darby, waiting for that to arrive so that I can do some actual clothing :)
I got some nice designs from Urban Threads, can't wait to do them!

Acorn, any tips you've learned so far and willing to share? :D

I would say...

Stabiliser matters very much.  I use iron-on, tear-away most of the time.  I also like water soluble stabiliser, but the papery one, not the rubbery version.

Choose your own tension and ignore what the machine is telling you - in my case it needs to be a great deal lower than the level the machine chooses or the bobbin thread comes up to the top.

For my machine I get the best results if the top and bobbin threads are the same weight and material, but also using specific bobbin thread on the bobbin.

If you're having repeated thread breaks, lower the speed.

If you forget to change back to the embroidery foot you can break your needle in the most spectacular fashion...

And Urban Threads rule.

I'm having trouble finding the software that cam with my machine and am getting no where with emailing them. If I down load a design from Urban threads will I be able to just transfer it to my machine by loading it onto the USB key or will I need to have the software on my PC?

As long as you choose the right file for your machine (mine is .vp3 for Husqvarna Viking) you can download it and transfer it using your usb stick with no problems.   :)

I had an incredible amount of trouble getting the software installed - and I am very computer literate.  I had no response at all from Husqvarna. The dealer who supplied my machine was of some help.

After all that I haven't used the provided software much at all.  I think its main value is in letting you view the embroidery on your computer.

Those leaves are really gorgeous!! Were they done using an embroidery machine?

Yes - with a pattern from Urban Threads.

I'm having a lovely time embroidering everything that doesn't move with my new embroidery machine, although I do still do hand embroidery too - that's a habit I'll never be able (or want) to break!

Thank you so much for all the help. I have a Viking too and cannot find the disk. It was installed on the home PC but himself did some sort of rebooting thing and it's not there anymore (after I had painstakingly added all my threads to it as well). I've lost track of how many times I have emailed them looking to see how to replace it.

I'm very excited to try a few new designs now.

If you don't already know it, do check what filetype your machine uses.  I downloaded a lot of .hus files before my machine was delivered - luckily all free ones - which were useless, because although .hus are Husqvarna files, they're for different Husqvarna machines to mine!

Acorn, how dd you get the variegated effect in the designs ...  it looks like a very slow change variegated thread has been used!
Did you have to stop and re-thread each time at various points of the pattern or ??

The rainbow coloured ones on the bag thingy were colour changes.  The pattern was really clever, and overlapped the colours so that they seem to change gradually rather than all at once.  I was very impressed with it!   0_0

I have a topaz so I think that is the VP3 format.
