I would like to near your ideas and suggestion on what contests you would like to see and participate in next year. Feel free to suggest a time frame as well.
I want to put a contest list together, as I did last year, so that everybody who wants to participate can plan ahead.
Fire away please :D
-
Manuela, how about a kantha, sashiko or boro piece? This could be anything from a mugrug or a wrap or cushion, to a coat.
-
And, lots of folk here have sewing machines they don't often use. So how about a make from our least used machine(s)?. The rules could be something simple like a shopping bag.
-
What, @jintie if we're
sensble and frugal boring and only have one machine???
I'd love to do Kantha / Sashiko.I
I'll give it some thought ......
-
@Manuela, could we have a reminder of last year's list, please? Personally, I'd like a coat and jacket contest.
-
The SWAKOP is a huge commitment and I think quite a few start (with good intentions) and don't manage to see it through. I don't even consider it because I know I won't have the time to do the number of garments.k
So, what about a mini SWAKOP - 3 coordinating garments that can each be worn with one of the others. Bonus points if all 3 can be worn together - or something along those lines.
-
Lowena, good idea- take your machine and put it thro its paces to the extreme!
-
How about a 6PAC of any combination spread over 2 or 3 months?
-
Just checked this years and perhaps a repeat of the stash busting one? Maybe we could make it a seasonal one twice a year?
-
I'd like to do stripes again as I didn't get to do what I had planned.
I like all the wardrobe ones but do find SWAKOP goes on a bit long and I get a bit fed up of it (sorry!) so like the idea of shorter seasonal/mini collections.
How about a trousers pants one where you have to show front, side and back of them on the person once made.
-
I like some of the already suggested ideas, like Boro/Kantha, and stripes (well I always like stripes!)...
I'm also thinking that a "Lovely Lingerie" contest would be nice; could be anything worn underneath a garment but not on it's own, so bras, camisoles, slips/petticoats, panties/knickers, etc.
Or what about an "Awesome Accesories" contest where the person would have to show the outfit that the accessory/accessories were meant to coordinate with; could be hats, bags, scarves, or even fabric jewelry...
I'll add more as I come up with ideas
-
Manipulating fabric - pleats, tucks, cutouts etc
Fabric swap - send one of your unloveds on to another person to make something. Say 2m limit possibly.
Metallics - gold, silver etc.
Unusual fastenings - not your normal zips, buttons.
Activewear - definitely not me - well, I'd make a headband!
Pockets.
Something reversible.
-
@UttaRetch There is still the thread 'contests in 2019' in this section. All there to remind me that I thought they all looked possible. Number finished (on time) 1.

I was inactive for most of this year, which is why it is good to see what I missed, not that I could have got my act together to take part in any of them. :D
-

@jintie, I think I’ve met the person you talk about.... they happen to have a Sashiko machine :D
-
Oh Manuela! You have a good memory!
-
I like indigotiger's idea of lingerie and toileandtrouble's of activewear but include swimwear too. For anyone from the darkside, maybe a crazy quilt project (a pillow, a bag, a tablerunner)- use up bits of stash and try different machine & hand stitches.
-
Part of me says just rerun this years contests again and I'll have a stab at them again, definitely ones I planned to participate in and things just passed me by.
Which of this year's contest would you like to see again?
-
So far I gather we could run the following (thinking out loud here)
Hand sewing
- that could include Shashiko, Kantha, etc
- time frame?
Using up scraps (we did that in 2018)
- open to all categories
Several contests were quite popular this year, some not. So, it would make sense to re-run the popular ones and make them annual. For example a contest featuring a certain colour. This year we had ‘Having the Blues’, so next year it could be something in the lines of ‘Feeling Pink’, ‘Green with Envy’ -methinks @Lowena would like the latter particularly.
I also think ‘Florals Rule’ in spring/summer and ‘Plaids, Tartans & Checks’ in autumn could become an annual feature
Thank you @Francesca for this idea:

Thank you @Helen M:

Thanks @toileandtrouble (not sure about the fabric swap though, no time to organise that)

All of them because I didn't do any and followed the road paved with good intentions.....it's very warm where I am now (and not because I made too many outfits!)! :S
-
@wrenkins Oh, is that you over there? Hi!
-
They're all great ideas but I particularly love hand sewing, using up scraps, mini SWAKOP, and lingerie.
-
It is T&T and I'm sweltered. :S
Hiya! 0_0
-
I think that sounds great. How about doing them every 3 months e.g 4 mini-SWAKOPS. I was going to suggest seasonal but I know personally I try to sew a season ahead. Maybe "Get ready for Spring" could run Jan - March. "Get ready for Summer" April to June. Don't know how that would work for other people though.
@Francesca, we could do them every three months as sew-alongs, I’m not sure I’d be able to manage them as contest - that would be too many contests running at the same time. Another possibility would be twice a year as 3-month contests instead of SWKOP.... Let’s see how many SWAKOP submissions we’ll have this year.
-
I'm afraid I have no ideas, but will enter any that I can - although I do mostly only enter if a competition happens to coincide with something I'm making, and of course my entry is just there to make up the numbers, not a cat in hell's chance of winning anything 0_0 0_0
-
I think a handsewing project needs 2-3 months. Although it could run alongside another challenge, such as a SWAP.
-
@jintie 2 or 3 months??!! :S whatever are you intending to make??
-
although I do mostly only enter if a competition happens to coincide with something I'm making,
I'm a bit like that, and sometimes a competition would suit something I've just finished making!
I like he suggestion of having a specific colour once a year, should be easy to organise and leaves a lot of choice as to what to make.
Metallic, glitz and bling - maybe in the run up to Christmas.
Underwear/lingerie is a good suggestion.
Stash busting of course! maybe incorporate two or more fabrics from stash.
Tailored jacket or coat - maybe that needs to be a 3 month option.
-
I would like a competition for people to finish the things they started for this year"s completions but which didn't get completed in time.
-
What about a darkside contest with a topic like... "Make something out of just 3 fatquarters" ;)
-

@Goth Gardiner,we do have an UFO sew-along thread for this, ot wasn’t popular as a contest.
-

I remember that @Iminei was looking for Darkside ideas, but yes, we could run it here. Many Darksiders never venture to this section of the forum though ;)
-
You've pipped me to the post @Sakar as I'm about to launch a similar thread in the Darkside ...
Im planning on running it on the 1st of next month ,... so start gathering your ideas together Gang!
-
That sounds great @Iminei 0_0
-
I like the mini SWAKOP idea, that seems more manageable than tackling the whole thing in one go. I'm pretty hopeless at entering most competitions - still working on my home-furnishing ones from back in January...
Did someone already mention fabric embellishment, like printing or stamping, embroidery, etc on your fabric then make your garment? That could be good.
I'm a bit scared to make any suggestions, 'cos I feel I'd have to enter if you run a competition that I've suggested and that's a whole lot of pressure to lift my game... :D
-
I'm a bit like that, and sometimes a competition would suit something I've just finished making!
That has happened to me, most recently with the current contest "combining prints and patterns"... I have the perfect project in the works, but I started sewing on it last week! If I'd remembered to check the list of contests first, I'd have waited til the 1st of November.
-
Only thing I can think of is a "why haven't I made that yet" as a kicker to use a pattern you have bought but haven't got round to or to buy one that you have lusted after for a while. NB this doesn't have to turn into a "what on earth was I thinking when I bought that" challenge.
-

Good idea, but perhaps it could be called 'Finally got around to making this'.

Or in some cases 'these' :|

I could probably have multiple entries in that competition 0_0
I could also enter a few things in a "what on earth was I thinking" competition too :S
-
@Sewingsue: how about 'Finally got around to making ...' for single OR multiple entries. Personally, I don't think I could complete more than one in the timeframe as I sew so slooooooooooooooooooowly. (https://i.imgur.com/S39XZCT.png)
-
My ideas
1. Black and white contest
2. Denim but no jeans or jeans jackets
3. Four piece wardrobe with mix and match pieces
4. Upcycle/recycle
5. Accessories
6. Jackets/ coats
-
"P and Q" = patchwork and quilting?
yep
-
I have enjoyed the Stashbusting contest though I entered late. It and having a list of items to make each month has kept me focused on using up the stash. I love that it runs the full year.
I like the idea of using two different fabrics to make something as long as it isn't garment only related.
Having a 3-6 PAC is a great idea. Three is lovely as most people can do it and keep adding to it to get a full SWAP or SWOAP. Themes can be basic pieces, bring it together with a handmade accessory.
-
I really enjoyed the bag competition and seeing the creativity of the other entrants.
Not sure if I’m repeating what’s already been said but...
I’d like something like accessories (?) that’s not garment making, so similar to the mugrug but I don’t know if that’s a darkside thing?
Also, something made using freehand machine stitching? I was just reading the thread posted by @Sara-S and found it very inspiring.
Also, an upcycle/recycle competition. I picked up a child’s flowery denim skirt in a charity shop that I’d like to make into a bag but I haven’t decided on the design yet. It was the brightly coloured large buttons that attracted me but then I thought maybe I could do something with the skirt rather than just cutting off the buttons.
-
Also, just remembered, what about a competition that involves making hats and gloves type accessories?
I’ve only made a basic bucket hat so far, but I’m interested in making a fleece type winter hat.
-
@WildAtlanticWay we had an recycle/upcycle contest this year and it’s hight on the list of contests to repeated. A contest combining fabrics (prints/patterns) is currently running and most contests are open for all kind of accessories as well - so feel free to submit bags and hats there. It was a hat that won the upcycle contest, as stool and a bag were among the other entries. :)
Something like mug rugs and piece and quilt thingies are best done the the Darkside, @Iminei is currently looking for contest ideas as well.
-
@Ann, I think we keep UFOs and Stash-busting as year-long sew-alongs.... ;)
-
Given the revived popularity of animal prints, should we follow the bloggers world and do a Jungle January contest to start the year?
-
I would enjoy that. :flower: Mind you, I'm not saying I'd get anything made. But Jungle January always gives me a grin.
Now I might be tempted if it was fairly wide open, not just garments but accessories as well. I have a leopard print Minkie remnant just crying out to be on a hat and some gloves/gauntlets.
You do all wear gauntlets, don't you? ><
-
Oh yes I'd like to do Jungle January, I have some great animal print fabrics I'd love to use.

Oops wrong button.
Only when motor cycling or skiing! 0_0
They stop the draught going up your sleeves! The rain runs down your sleeve though! 0_0

Only for gardening, and I think that would be a real waste of your fabric!
-
Good, we’re slowly getting there, the first two months decided:
January - Jungle January, open to all categories
February - Making Shirts contest

With less then 10 inches of annual rainfall this sounds like a good conservation tool. More fashionable then rain barrels as well. ;)
-
3.3 Rainfall
Rainfall varies widely, with the wettest places being in the Sperrin, Antrim and Mourne
Mountains. Exposure to rain-bearing winds off the Atlantic results in higher average rainfalls
in the more western counties of Fermanagh, Londonderry/Derry and Tyrone. In the wettest
areas, rainfall totals reach 1950 mm. Average annual totals are just below 800 mm. The
highest rainfall areas have average annual totals of about 1600 mm. In all areas, the
wettest months are between October and January.
The combination of close proximity to active weather systems arriving from the Atlantic and
the extensive areas of upland can lead to notable daily and monthly rainfalls. Periods of
prolonged rainfall can lead to widespread flooding, for example, the autumn of 2000 was
the wettest season for over 100 years with several flooding episodes, including a fall of 167
mm of rain at the Silent Valley, County Down over 48 hours in early November.
@Renegade Sewist 1950mm is nearly 77 inches. :S
My mum says 'six months of the year it rains and for the other six months the trees drip!'.
-
Last night as I was dropping off to sleep I was thinking about ways to use border prints in clothing.
So suggestion from me, how about a border prints contest.
-
That would be a very narrow field, how about ‘Using prints creatively’ @SewRuthieSews ?
-
I'd make some suggestions, but my sense of humor goes down like a lead pipe on here usually. Plus, for me, it doesn't really matter much. I usually do make the garments for the contests about 2/3rds of the time, I just never actually enter.
I have a few pieces I have to make next year, but I'll do them regardless of a contest (namely lingerie...I need French knickers, a robe or two and a few slips/combinations).
-
@Kwaaked you must enter. I for one would love to see them. By the way I have enjoyed your sense of humour - I often don't have time to respond with my appreciation though. I dip in and out briefly throughout the day. Keep it coming!
-
So the first two contests next year will be:
Jungle January - sewing with animal prints, open to all categories
February - Making shirts
I’ll put the whole schedule out in due course. Instead of SAWKOP, we will do 2 seasonal mini wardrobing contests - one for summer, one for winter
-
Manuela!
Theses are both good contests. And muni wardrobes are always fun.
-
My sewing room should be set up next year and I think I might be able to join in at least one contest.
-

Me too!!! Oh, OK. I'll never have a sewing room unless I get a certain fellow out of here... But I'm working on putting a table, small, very small, into my bedroom. I've identified which table and I've bought two excellent LED lamps as well as a very ergonomic chair to use. But I'm determined to enter a few contests.
-
I'm determined to enter a few contests.
I’ll keep that in mind
-
I've not reread all the ideas, naughty Nene, but one thought I've had is to suggest that what ever contests get slated for November and especially December are of the easier type. I think topics that might be giftable would be terrific. Ideas such as accessories, bags, pillows or home dec accessory. Garment wise maybe tee shirts, or cardigans, or just "knits". Things for our pets.
Just generally less complex so perhaps more people squeeze in the time to participate.
PS: Santa is bringing me a very nice tablet with a very nice camera. Very, very nice camera. Photos have been an obstacle for me in the past. That excuse is done. :toast:
-
One of the reasons why I pretty much stopped sewing @Renegade Sewist, was the lack of a dedicated workspace. I now have a two bedroom flat and the smaller room will be my sewing room. :D
My brother had an old 'rise and fall' drawing board with a table top that can be locked into the horizontal. The plan is mount two hollow core doors hinged down the middle to create a large cutting table.
-
I love the idea of seasonal mini-SWAKOPs (the standard one was just too much of a commitment for me). However, as someone in the opposite hemisphere, I will obviously miss out :(
Any way the rules could be modified to work for either hemisphere? IE call it a "Seasonal SWAKOP" rather than a "Winter SWAKOP" or "Summer SWAKOP", and then you make a collection appropriate to your season?
Mind you, who knows if I'll get time to participate, so maybe best to leave it as is :'(
-
I'm sure I read that it was seasonal rather than summer/winter but I can't find it now of course. @Manuela will know. We can't have you wearing snoods at Christmas! :o
-

No worries, this will be accommodated @elisep
