Thank goodness I got rid of my little Bernina 215, although to be honest I never did clean it and I certainly didn't use any oil.

Since I've been a Pfaff sewing machine lady I think the only thing I've done is clean the bobbin area out and that's not very often.

Machine Accessories / Re: Scissors
« on: March 14, 2024, 10:13:27 AM »
After getting a set of cheap scissors with a machine I once bought, which are still in use for anything but cutting fabric, I've treated myself over the years.  Mostly Fiskars with some heavy duty ones beside, plus a decent pair of pinking scissors.   I got some Singer scissors for my 21st birthday, which are still in use but not with fabric.  Using on paper :scream:

The scissors I use for haircutting, I've had since I was around 15/16, a German brand, that are really ready for sharpening again, plus two other pairs that I like using and  were not that expensive but work well.   I did buy some new ones some  time last year but they were too small (my fault) and also 'slow', more for beginners

I must say those bags look very professional @DiverDan I would never have thought you'd never sewn before.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: New overlocker tips

Funnily enough, on Wednesday, while waiting for DH I was sat studying my skirt hem (as you do ) and thinking how good it looked despite being made around 2010.  The overlocking was  still perfect and it was  at that time my Janome 644D which I replaced simply because I'd got the Bernina bug and  the lure of a needle threader.

I nearly bought a Janome, @Celia just for the G foot on it, like I had on my old MC7000, which did a perfect hemming stitch always in the right place.  I've always considered that Janome are good value machines that you don't have trouble with, plus they have a wide range of models to suit your needs and circumstances.

Is it only me who gets itchy when they see a machine advertised on TSP?

So far, I've had the bobbin in and out so I can do that. I've taken a foot off and back on so I can do that and I've had the stitch plate off and back on so I can do that too. I'm getting there!

I think what we really want @Bill is a livestream camera, then we can keep tabs on any hammers etc., that come into the room

That  is a super duper machine though.

First thing I thought of @Ohsewsimple  men are notorious for not reading manuals/instructions whatever.  There's no need to read the whole lot at first @Bill just the salient parts before you sew.

And don't you dare moan now, you've got a really classy machine.

Love it although I went without arms, they won't go under when roll under.  You can beat a comfy chair, especially for your back.

@Gernella its still only £5.30 for 1000 metres!
However I have found this site which sells them individually.
https://www.marentcrafts.com/product/gutermann-thread-mara-120-spools-1000m/

Glad you brought this up because I bought some sets from William Gee but I’d like to get individual colours now.   :thumb:

That's a good price for 120 @Ohsewsimple  I came a bit  unstuck with the 5000 meters I bought cheap.  I started off with it in a large mug, threaded it through an old anglepoise lamp and threaded down to my Pfaff via a push on large spool holder. Bit Heath Robinson but it worked.  Fortunately I only bought three.

The larger spools I have are mostly Toldilock from Samuel Taylors for the overlocker but I have to thread these through stand alone holders so usually I have two 120 on and Toldilock on the other
separate stand.

as it seems to be the concensus that gutermann thread is the way to go, what's the go-to all rounder one that I should order for her. Seems to be a good selection of different ones, sew-all and mara seem to be the ones popping up all the time.

I have rather a lot of Gutermann's Sew All in many different colours @AnthonyExmouth   together with Mara 120, bigger reels, which I tend  to use all the time.  A few years ago you could buy packs of 10 different colours at a very attractive price, so I went overboard and finished up with about a 100 of them

I have a "selection box" of different types of needles, so take out and use the appropriate one for the fabric each time, then put it back in.  I, as most people might guess, only replace them when they break - works fine for me!   0_0

Works for me as well @Bodgeitandscarper although I do have a proper Sharps box for the damaged needles.

I'm sure she will love the machine @AnthonyExmouth  but if she does start and give you some agro for spending the money, just put on your next door to crying  and only trying to help mode on.  Works for me.

Actually @Lowena I've never ever tried a machine either.  Even the first one I bought in a bricks and mortar shop, I chose after going into to buy some thread and saw an assistant using it.  She did offer to show me but I just wanted to pay and go (Janome MC7000). That was a leg up  from a 21st birthday present from my parents, a solid Brother that had two stitches  from memory (I  am going back a long way )  The rest have all been bought on line, although I have had conversations with Russell from SMD prior to purchase when I've dithered between two models.
