Title: Spring into summer baby blanket
Post by: SkoutSews on September 21, 2018, 14:48:49 PM
Another grandchild is due any day now and I've just finished a second baby blanket.  I'd made a granny square blanket for number 1 gallery pic (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;pic=21) and wanted to do something different for the new baby. Before starting the first blanket, I'd asked in TSF for pattern suggestions and this Spring into Summer pattern was one suggestion.  This was the result. Pic here (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;pic=162) It's worked diagonally from random dye yarn.

The last one had taken a lot of making up, so I thought this pattern would at least avoid that.  Yes, it did, but no, I don't think it was any easier!  The worked fabric becomes heavy towards the end and the long rows in the middle are hard going.  I like the result though and am happy now it's done.  The finished blanket is 28 inches square.  The granny square blanket needed lining with cream fleece to give a winter weight pram blanket.  This one is thicker and heavier, so no lining was needed.

Comments on the pattern:  I needed an extra ball of yarn to complete the blanket, so 4 skeins not 3 as the pattern states.  The yarn (Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable, 100% acrylic) is soft and makes up nicely to a cosy weight, but it does split when working with it.  There were many sweary-words as the evenings wore on!  The yarn is quite fuzzy and the ends of the balls got into a snarled up tangle which took time to sort out.  I like the random-dye effect, though.  The diagonal working means that the pattern would be easily adapted either to a triangular shawl or to a smaller or larger square.

Sorry about the shots of my shoes, I'm a hopeless photographer!

It's lovely, and very different from the first one, no arguments there!

Your blankets are both beautiful, @SkoutSews - I love the definition between the colours on the granny square blanket, and the yarn for the Spring into Summer blanket is absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for giving us details of it.  <3

I made this pattern a few years ago, I think, and really liked it. It's basically a C2C blanket with a lovely edging added, and is very effective.

Thanks, @Kenora. Perhaps you were the kind person who told me about the pattern?

That is so sweet. I really like it being worked on the diagonal.  :wool:

I don't think so @SkoutSews , but I would definitely recommend it as a TNT pattern which works every time, whether you're putting the border on or not.  <3  I also put a little crocheted flower in one corner of mine to hide where the border joins on each row.  :flower:

Your Spring into Summer blanket is beautiful SS - love those colours!

I've made a couple and they are still going strong.  Just found one in a UFO bag too....

It's a lovely pattern, and one I love to make.

A really lovely blanket. As we head into autumn, your little grandchild will be glad of it to snuggle under.  Best wishes for the baby’s birth, whenever it is! My little granddaughter is 7 weeks now and those weeks have just been a joy. Hope you enjoy it ...and from what I can see, you can never have too many blankets.

( P.s if you really don’t like your shoes in the photo,  you could easily crop them out)

Thank you all!

@Kenora I like the idea of the flower to hide the join. I might try that.

@b15erk - Jessie, perhaps you sent me the link to the pattern? It was on the previous forum, so I wasn't able to find the post  >:)

@Sheilago I never have the patience to faff around with the photos! I probably should.

Baby is due anytime now, we're looking forward to meeting him or her.
