Title: FOQ 2018 Who, What, Where .. all you need to know
Post by: Iminei on September 01, 2017, 17:19:32 PM
I have a very special offer for all of you who would like to visit the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham next year.

I have secured reservations at the

Premier Inn, NEC / Birmingham airport

for the duration of the Festival,

Thursday 9 August through to the Sunday 12th August

at a cost of just

£68.75

per night per room;
I have reserved a mix of both Double and Twin rooms,
so you could share with a friend, making it even cheaper to visit the show!

http://www.premierinn.com/gb/en/hotels/england/west-midlands/birmingham/birmingham-necairport.html (http://www.premierinn.com/gb/en/hotels/england/west-midlands/birmingham/birmingham-necairport.html)

(WOW!! Even cheaper than I paid for the Ibis styles this year!)

You can reserve one night, two nights or all four, it is up to you!

This doesn't unfortunately include brekkie but that is available, at extra cost, payable on site.
There is a nice bar and a good and reasonable restaurant on site (ask me how I know?!)

The NEC had a shuttle bus running to and from the NEC via the hotel this year
and there is no reason to think they wont be doing similarly next year.

Failing that it is an easy and pleasant 10 to 15 minute walk ... or £5 taxi ride to the show.
(Divide that by 2 and its less than a Starbucks to travel in style to the show)

So if next year is your year to visit the FoQ,
Why not take advantage of this discounted rate
to go and join up with your friends on The Sewing Place.

If you are interested in joining the party,
please pm Iminei.

I won't need a room if I go, living less than an hour away.

When do you need to have names and dates by, Iminei?
Title: Re: Festival of Quilts 2018 .....
Post by: Iminei on September 02, 2017, 07:12:51 AM
I would say that I need definite confirmation by the end of July 2018, but I personally would be more comfortable with a month before the show ... ie the 9th July 2018.

This would enable me to see who's coming and arrange a time to meet, book a table for dinner etc.

After I receive your confirmation, I will liaise with the booking team and get your reservation code and details of check in/check out etc. to you.

Thank you.
I have friends who have spoken about going, but at least one has family commitments that mean she would not want to commit too far ahead.

Just to let you know that I have reserved a mix of both Double and Twin rooms at The Premier Inn next year ...
which of course means you could, if you wish,  share with a friend, for the same low cost of just £68.75 per night, making next years visit to the FoQ even more economical!!!

I will of course also be offering Group tickets to all our members, (whether or not you stay) which we have found to be  the cheapest tickets for the show ....

Hi Imi,

I would really like to come, but -as you know- 2018 I will skip  :( Maybe 2019... who knows... ;)

Best regards,
Sakar

I'd love to go but I would go down and back in one day - train - because of my pets. Might fly instead since I am 20 min from airport - that's probably better.  Would be fun! Visiting sewing expos is one of the things on my new retirement list ;)

Post by: Iminei on October 11, 2017, 16:16:19 PM
Thursday (first day) is very busy ... Sunday (last day) much less so, but traders have less stock, tho I have never really seen a stall with less than oodles of stuff on it. Sunday is also half an hour shorter ... Its horses for courses really.

I am offering hotel rooms at a bargain rate as well as discounted tickets for next year too.

Post by: Pearl on October 11, 2017, 17:08:29 PM
There is such a lot to see and do, LeilaMay.  I only did one day this year but it wasn't really enough.  I usually do two, one to look at the quilts and one to do a workshop and to buy pretties.
Title: Re: Festival of Quilts 2018 .....
Post by: LeilaMay on October 11, 2017, 17:19:31 PM
I'm presuming you can buy a ticket for just one day?
honestly, although I'd love to do multiple days and hotel and all that kind of thing, the cost makes it prohibitive. There's only so much I feel able to spend on my hobbies and crafts, seeing as we moved here to allow early retirement for my beloved, and he's STILL working part time/low stress job.
So it's up and back in one day, or not at all.

Of course there might be a show nearer to me - at the Bath& West showground or something? I used to live right by the Three Counties in Malvern, so the Quilt Show there was nice and easy.

:)

Yes, of course you can do one day.

The West Country Quilt Show was at UWE in Bristol at the beginning of September.  The dates for 2018 don't seem to have been published yet.  I'm going to Malvern later in the month.

I've only ever done a Thursday - 4 years. I only really go for the quilts as I have two very good fabric suppliers locally so one day is plenty for me. It's a great day out, a friend goes for two days.

I shall have a peek at the workshops!

I'm sorry I can't give a definite answer yet about whether I'll be getting tickets from you or not.

After last year, my daughter was told by her dad that she won't be able to come with me again because he needs her to work in one of his catering trailers...(he has a new job on his books which now clashes with the FOQ).

She's free to do whatever she wants. I've never forced her to come with me, but he can be a bit of a bully and I'm not sure she's brave enough to say no to him if that's what she wants to do.

I'll have to wait until closer to the show. I'm still deciding if I'd be happy to attend on my own....I've always enjoyed the company of my daughter when I've been. It won't be the same without her.  :(
She was 9 years old when she first went to it.  :)

Title: Re: Festival of Quilts 2018 .....

The hotel bookings are good til the first day of the show, but I will say the Monday of the week of the show so my card doesnt get mugged

and as for tickets, as they have to be sent to me and then out to you, I need to know by the middle of July.

As long as I get 10 tickets sold, I can then have as many as I want at the discounted price; so as soon as I have 10 tickets ordered I will be able to order them and they will be ready to go even if, as Fajita (iirc) found out, you turn up on the door and can contact me (on the days I'm there of course)

I wont be going the entire stretch this time tho', last year really was a bit special, but certainly for 2 days.

Just got my bumper info pack through from the FoQ Organisers ....

Gotta start thinking whether I will be entering anything this year.

We also need more bods to buy tickets otherwise we wont be able to take advantage of the group ticket discount.

Its £12 per adult, (£11 Quilters Guild members)
£6 per child this year
(+ P&P of £1.50 per order)

which is the cheapest tickets you can buy!

If you exhibit you get a discount on your ticket ... but a group ticket is even cheaper !!!

So start planning for early August and put your reservation in for tickets ...

@Iminei  I have a dilemma.........
I would like to attend on the Thursday and Friday ( if I can garner the money ) but........ having asked about and read a lot I have decided that, with my heart condition, I would need to buy VIP tickets so that there is a dedicated cloakroom, comfy eating and seating areas. Although a 2 day VIP ticket is £56 I have been assured it is worth it for anyone with limited mobility.
I'm investigating further and will get back to you if that's ok...... shouldn't be long  <3
Title: Re: Festival of Quilts 2018 .....
Post by: Iminei on April 11, 2018, 09:44:42 AM
@Lowena

I have spoken to the ticket merchants and I'm afraid the group deal is only available on standard tickets ... :( ...
and your buying two VIP tickets cant be counted toward our minimum purchase of 10 to qualify for the group rate  :(

But it will be wonderful to see you there anyways, I just hope we can round up some more bods to get to that magical number of 10!!!!

I will be there 2 days,
@maliw said she and her friend Phyll might be attending ... thats another 2
@twopence  and her lovely daughter ... 2
and I'm sure @Deafoldbat said she might be coming for 2 days

So we just need a few more bods and we'll all be winning!!

The Fine Art Quilts for this years FOQ have just been selected/released ...

Fine Art Quilts (https://www.thefestivalofquilts.co.uk/things-to-do/the-galleries/fine-art-quilt-masters-2018/?utm_source=Adestra&utm_medium=email&utm_term=&utm_content=The%20Fine%20Art%20Quilt%20Masters%20shortlist%20has%20been%20selected&utm_campaign=12%2F06%2F2018%20email%20only)

Some of them are a lil too avantgarde for my taste but my god! the inspiration and the talent !!!

Should we have bets on which will win?

My favourites are the ones by...

Annette Morgan,  Hazel Ryder, Jane Ashe, and Louise Jessup....I'd like to take a closer look at the one by Olga Gonzalez-Angulo.
I especially like the one by Hazel Ryder.

I understand the work which has gone into them and the talent but....hmmmm....most of them are not really to my taste either.

The Sandy Snowden one (reverse applique I think) is a bit nyeh ...

I much prefered her entry last year ... Ramshakle Village

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/wOnbmSJH30TAaQP2K1M-FiTC0-l1s7lnGEx9OrHNyjSFvz1ve3_yLjyx6HvUposKxxkuUnl9ZZLx1RDXXeFGmRFSyc-i0c2UgsFhEN4Zn90a3TDBc6rsuS5PTQS1jiN7IoOy9hkJA1q98uR7J0VOebUnjxiAKzCRLC-Z2yBFt_fHH373gyVa0RuZI0TIpoTDCuYfktUy5Nkl8gkSV3xFnGYgV-2wlSNgaevJ6kyf9j-m1l8A1nmD1y4wxf4jlj-vapjrgJMunZCiAM86zSvfYj8Z1cNO-V8JHYpjyID5Hd9eVr1Yrb4jw25fFuw68RVPpmem-26AdKqyEcLXx17loYv5III-Pe1iLV-LKCNxc3sZayte7US1KE-U42yUdIzryuXTl9FHyJ-LjR88EXftDi57flyIfFtSN_Fy4oiLQNQL-3Tyfi4Tlc5K8aQfK9a_p7MzfyL_wWeimocBWIq4rAFsVlfC6pwOwlni2iqakBuqaMpHlKlTZYPMz2scAeGLAfLtcs3YN278RoZvCvl3MfqSkjvd9uRNhRngYKnVsKSQIOT_CLo0s1mx7rIxOalH3jXYdzJPxycCT9ICqv56DpOIdae3Jz1Y4py2gNP0NumeQACvkrRZ1FbNGWS1GBGgB1wQPPHq-_FvMX-AOr7-pWqIv6E=w818-h785-no)

This years offering seems to be a random portion of last years!!  -< Maybe the judges notes said it was too pictorial and not ambiguous enough ?!

I like the Shiffer one (the road) and the Jane Ashe one, I like very much and  The Olga one, I wonder if that one is absolutely humongous and made of 1" squares ...though they would seem to be a lot of the same fabrics...

I think my choices show that Im a pictorial girl!

What to wear? What to take? What to carry?........
Will it be hot in the halls? Will a T shirt suffice or will I need a cardi?
Can you buy drinks?
Will I want to buy much?
Do the stalls take debit cards or should I take cash?
Will it be crowded ( Thurs / Fri ) and are there chairs?
Can you use cameras?
Getting quite excited  :)
Title: Re: Festival of Quilts 2018 .....

What to wear?  Light, comfortable clothing.  I usually wear cotton trousers and a t-shirt.  Even in winter.

What to take?  Credit card, money, packed lunch!

What to carry?........ Bag big enough for all your purchases. (or maybe not on the first day.  I usually just have a look round on the first day.

Will it be hot in the halls?  Can't remember ever being hot.
Will a T shirt suffice or will I need a cardi?  If the weather is anything like it's been for the last couple of months, no.

Can you buy drinks?  Yes, but the queues can be long.

Will I want to buy much?   Well, as you don't have a stash, not as much as the rest of us.  Last year, I made a list and only bought what was on it.  Anything that you have ever thought you might want to buy will probably be there.  It's a great opportunity to buy for your next project.

Do the stalls take debit cards or should I take cash? Not sure about this one.  They take credit cards so, probably.  I always take cash so I don't spend more than planned!

Will it be crowded ( Thurs / Fri ) and are there chairs? Friday and Saturday are busier, but I've never had a problem finding a seat.  Apparently, there is more seating than previously.

Can you use cameras?  Yes for most exhibits, although some exhibits and stalls have signs saying please don't.

Getting quite excited.  Me too! :D

I have a small backpack (12 x 8 x 3) that fits close and is useful for small things and keeping shopping bags in.  I wear jeans/trousers with good front pockets to keep my phone and purse in but then I do that most days anyway as I don’t normally carry a bag.  We will probably shop a bit on both days as I’m not good carrying things but I am preparing a list on my phone of things that I need and their current prices.  I have decimated last years programme to get the plan out and marked up the stalls that are a must visit.
Title: Re: Festival of Quilts 2018 .....
Post by: Iminei on July 14, 2018, 15:02:08 PM
1)   What to wear?
Layers, altho' as Pearl said of the weather continues in the same vein ... very light layers ... sensible shoes.
2)   What to take?
Camera, list, money, mini fan, drink and or sandwich
3)   What to carry? Big, but flat to the body bag or basket.
My usual Provencal rattan basket is no good as it sticks out too much
4)   Will it be hot in the halls?
Yes, there are times there will be so many bods in there, the temperature will get hot
5)   Will a T shirt suffice or will I need a cardi?
Refer to answer to Question #1
6)   Can you buy drinks?
Yes, but the queues are long and they (and the food) is expensive
7)   Will I want to buy much?
Anything you could possibly want is there.
Make a list and research online prices + P&P to make sure you are getting a bargain on the big stuff. The fabrics are amazing!
8 )  Do the stalls take debit cards or should I take cash?
Yes all but a few (usually continental stalls) take debit and credit cards.
9)   Will it be crowded ( Thurs / Fri ) and are there chairs?
Yes it will be crowded and Yes there is plenty of seating ...
Also your'e mixing with the toffs on Thursday aren't you ..so you have a dedicated comfy seating area
10) Can you use cameras?
Yes on most of the quilts; If you can't there will be a sign and security guards ready to drag you out of the halls kicking and screaming to the NEC Gael.

My friend has cancelled on me.   :(
She's going up north for her s(on)il's 30th birthday.  (She did say that she was unsure when I ordered the tickets.)

So, do I try to sell her ticket before I go in or go again on Sunday?  Maybe do a workshop?  Anyone want a ticket?

Two days to go! To facilitate my shopping experience (not that it really needs any help), I have prepared an A-Z list of all the exhibitors as on the FoQ website, though there are usually some late additions that don't appear on the website.

Seeing as I am there two days this year, it is highly likely that I will spot something on the first day and decide to think about it, only to forget where to find on the second day when I have changed my mind and decided I do need it after all.

If anyone else wants to print out the list, I've made it available as a PDF on Google (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RCb8b-cjHv5MxxT2BYV8NypJCQ3dOpjG/view?usp=sharing) drives.

As Iminei has found out (no Project Linus!) there have been a few changes to the Exhibitor list since I compiled it last week. I've updated the PDF file (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RCb8b-cjHv5MxxT2BYV8NypJCQ3dOpjG/view?usp=sharing) and the link in my original post.

Edited: Project Linus will be there after all. PDF updated again!

I’ve found a couple of 10% off offers that may be of interest.
The Quilt Room’s offer is if you print or show this voucher (https://www.quiltroom.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/NEC-2018-voucher1.pdf) on your phone/tablet.
Simply Solids are offering 10% off if you have one of their reusable bags, are a member of the MQG or are a member of the Quilters Guild - more details here (https://mailchi.mp/simplysolids/festival-of-quilts-2018-will-you-be-there).

Just piggy backing here ...
Linky (https://www.thefestivalofquilts.co.uk/win-500s-worth-quilting-goodies/) to a FOQ win £500 worth of goodies offer . Enter name, email and address .... offer ends after 7th September!

And BTW your Quilt Room linky doesnt work, here or from their own site ...must have crashed!!

Okay We now have 9 peeps for dinner at Sapore (6.30 pm) and I'm wondering if we can cram ourselves into two cars, Was it Pearl and Twopence that offered ?

Or whether we order a large taxi ??? Your thoughts, please Ladies?

And anyone else interested in the Friday evening at Rasa (7.30pm)

Can I also remind those attending the dinner at Sapore that you can take advantage of their Early Bird Offer  (https://www.saporerestaurant.co.uk/) (click on menu, then early bird to bring it up)
if you order by 7pm (hence the early arrival )

so if that is your whim, it might be an idea to study the menu in advance as, if you are anything like me, it can take a while to decide!

You can of course choose from whichever menu you like but this is an option.

I’ve attached a screen shot of the voucher for The Quilt Room. If the link still isn’t working, you can screen shot the screen shot instead.

I've only got a small Citreon, but if you think 3 could squeeze in the back, it's only a short journey.

Will TSP Bear be visiting the show again this year?

He certainly will and so will his buddy! In fact TSP Bear was so busy meeting his adoring fans last year he completely forgot to spend the fiver his mummy, Vege, gave him for the show ...

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/PZMI_rMb6FgqFJ3o9ALF8X5SZJeeJFP5mnHzQ5L-m6qHFqv0UgAws6xcYvEA97VwYUa_Dd5BbDKimrd3QKZ_9qf9NI6iY6FIe8JO6RYn9xK85t4boKu_YbiZ0fRXWfVaQJu7BwN2Ni57WS8fdc0jVuK6Z3ylDw9WKr8Oi9y_f2YRUnFHeffm7W-OB0FlBDaUAdyNCuO0qzXmV4ANJklo4I1_DRN0opehBZgg5_xSW9BvQkFPw9DlmQNq0equAertpJwsvsOYjZKzGEjonLDtOXeGPWy3G3TlYy2fIHWn1uvecpfsnsFmcQSb5Adgiv2sK4HBVpXBZa1rLXAZ48wHbGQ_vxrMNJ3zuJNvcoMsZd3PLRxLw5Rl9fiocRHlZXWpDShDaXBa3-LzebjMKZg6t3frwBTrWCZ8LuKr4HFBdjpVRXZXez28JDqRu7M4c-D6iWjrZzsQ5T2W8IK3PZy6c8QthKRgVZZHnJoV0m2R9uidfyGP-xFf6eBdwNhB1pzPwujyWPx4-nBeL61Kl7cnhoYbwyRf6o1z6xwa96V008bmeFOlAj3rJShYjr5V1s0EmoOH645RHgOTW37nNL2im4Z25wJAYL9VQg=w988-h738-no)

So he's determined to "give it large" !!? ?  -< I believe were his words !!! linky (https://photos.app.goo.gl/5NEvFXUfH32uujcx7)

This will be my last day of posting in any significant way (Phew I hear you cry!) so may I remind you ...

Please wear your badges  ..... and I have rubber backs for those that bought at FOQ last year, remind me to give you one!!!!

I will be taking badges for peeps to buy if they fancy one.

I will be chilling out in the Gallery area above the main foyer outside the festival from 12 - 1 ish every day ... Feel free to come along!

On Thursday lunchtime I will be up there with the Project Linus Quilts ...
A great opportunity to see them up close and personal ... but I still wont be letting you know who made which quilt!!!!!

We are going to donate The Project Linus Challenge quilts at around 1.30 pm on the Thursday.
Hopefully the info we have been given is correct and they will be on stand A50 ... so if you fancy coming along to see the handover, and take some pics ... please do!

If you want to join us for dinner .. Thursday 6.30 at Sapore, Friday 7.30 at Rasa ...Do let me know as soon as possible.

If you want to come to the Festival at short notice I still have tickets ...
PM me for my number, call me (being patient with a technodunce answering the call) and we will arrange to meet outside the festival and get you a ticket.

If you have bought tickets from me and are a member of the Quilters Guild, please bring your membership card/number to the show and I can organise a £1 refund on your ticket payable after the show ends.

We will be in Jo’s large Audi estate so getting us all to the restaurant shouldn’t be a problem.

No Pearl, but if we did, you could come on the train and leave the car at home ...

I do think that 6 of us in a car might be a bit too Notting Hill (https://youtu.be/_U_goRWe024) tho' ...
