In the wardrobe / Twisty trousers
« on: December 13, 2023, 11:23:07 AM »
I made some v. wide leg trousers out of a dark pink stretch velour for a Christmas lunch do. They are elasticated but quite loose at the waist (to allow for scoffing), and when I wore them yesterday, they kept twisting around the crotch area.

If I re-did the waist and tightened the elastic by a couple of inches, do you think this will stop them twisting? Or have I cut them out wrong with the grainline off? I did make them v quickly, so not my best efforts by far.

Technical Help / Sewing Stretchy fabric.
« on: November 20, 2023, 16:51:05 PM »
I’m thinking of making some palazzo/wide leg trousers for party wear. I’ve got some very stretchy lengthways polyester velour type fabric in a pinky red colour. There’s no stretch widthways as it’s more like a woven in that respect.

Will it be ok to cut and sew it so the stretch is going down the leg or do I need to sew it the other way? I’m sure that other stretchy trews I’ve had or made have some stretch widthways?

Maybe the answer is obvious but I’ve gone completely blank. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Patterns Discussion / Ideas please. Velour party pants?
« on: October 19, 2023, 09:29:16 AM »
I’ve got some deep burgundy velour fabric and I’m thinking of making myself something a bit Christmassy to wear.

I don’t ever wear dresses or skirts. It’s always tops with trousers. I bought a summery dress from Monsoon to get married in 10 years ago and haven’t worn it since. Not even sure if I still have it?

The velour is a bit stretchy and I’ve got about 2.5mtres, maybe 3m? I know I’ll have to be careful about the nap.

Currently thinking maybe very wide leg trousers that swish like a skirt when worn?

Help please !!!

Events / Skibbereen Quilt Exhibition, Ireland 14th - 16th July
« on: July 12, 2023, 07:51:03 AM »
Just in case there are any lurkers, we’ve got an exhibition this week by the Southern branch of the Irish Patchwork Society. The pic on the poster is a quilt made by my lovely friend Heidi. Her quilts can be found in quilt exhibitions all over Ireland.

This is a bit convoluted so please bear with…..

DH has said I can have an embroidery machine for my summer birthday, woo hoo.

I’ve been reading up lots of reviews online and trying to figure out my options and I could really do with some knowledgeable advice from you lovely lot.

1). I need my Brother NV1300 servicing. I also have a Juki F600 that needs servicing too. I also have a basic Singer Simple machine that my friend still has in her possession that I’d like to sell. I’m thinking that I could ask about trade-in possibilities?

2). I have a basic Brother FSW100 that I take to my sewing group which is v reliable and great for all the basic stuff. However, it doesn’t have a knee lifter and I LOVE my knee lifter as it’s my third hand when sewing. I feel quite lost without it so I’d like my normal day to day machine that stays in my sewing room to have a knee lifter.

3). I like my Brother machines so definitely fancy a Brother embroidery machine. However, I’m thinking a combined sewing/embroidery machine for fancy stuff could be very handy and best of both worlds? I’d only use it for occasional normal sewing. Looking at the following depending on price;

Brother F480 or  F580. (I have to buy in Europe as customs/import charges from the U.K. are ridiculous now.)

4). The recommended Singer sewing shop (for the servicing) in Waterford doesn’t sell Brother machines at all! He does do trade-ins and he sells Bernina, Juki etc. I wondered about seeing how much he’d offer for my Brother 1300 and the Juki? Anyone any idea how much you might get on a trade-in usually? Is it likely to be pants? I rang him a while ago but he wouldn’t give me a price until he’s seen them in person.

I’m thinking I could trade my machines in and buy the entry level Bernina 335 from him as it has the knee lifter. I’d probably do that before buying the embroidery machine as I might decide I don’t need a combined sewing/embroidery machine after all and just stick with an Embroidery only model? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Please anyone, what are your thoughts?

I’m going around in circles and I’m going to have to book an overnight in a hotel if I drive over to Waterford (to allow time for servicing the machines) so it’s quite a faff to plan.

In the wardrobe / Onesie for winter??
« on: October 07, 2022, 11:56:28 AM »
Any ideas for a pattern for something like this for me?
I was thinking it shouldn’t be that difficult to make my own pattern though? I’ll probably make it in two halves and join them at the middle aye with an elastic waistband to make it easier to get on and off?
I made an oversized fleece top for DS a couple of years ago that he wore all winter and I’ve now given him the one I made for myself but didn’t wear much as it’s grey and fits him now.

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Bernina 830 Record £175
« on: June 15, 2022, 07:59:28 AM »
Hi guys,

I’ve been offered a well looked after and well used Bernina 830 Record for £175.

It only comes with the basic foot and no extra feet.

I’m very tempted as I do like the older solidly built machines. For those who have had this machine, is it worth it? Will I be able to buy parts and spare feet easily?

I’m off to the smoke at the end of the month and I’d like to stock up on some gorgeous fabrics whilst there as there’s very little over here unless I travel for about 4 hours each way.

Vintage Machines / My 1956 Singer 99k treadle sewing machine
« on: May 05, 2022, 09:51:23 AM »
I recently bought this from a local charity shop for €80. It’s in pretty decent condition, and seems to be working ok and it came with a few bits.

It needs a clean so I’m thinking I’ll take it apart to get all the old grease and gunk out and and DH is going to refurb the treadle base for me.

It had a manual inside one of the drawers for a 201, so I wonder what happened to that one?

I’ve taken off the rubber mat on the treadle foot and removed the leather belt so that’s why it looks loose in the photos.

Here it is finished. The pattern is called Noisy Farm by Wendy Gratz from Shiny Happy World.

Ok, so I’ve played around with piecing bits together, made a few mug rugs and similar small useful items. However, I’m planning to make a toddler sized appliquéd quilt for my new granddaughter  :loveit: using pattern pieces from the Shiny Happy World website. Wendy on there has produced some really helpful tutorials.

In the meantime, I’m going to practice by making a simple pieced and quilted throw to go over a sofa. I’ve cut and pieced together 5” cotton squares into blocks of 4 squares. Pressed in one direction rather than opening the seams and pressing. (It felt odd doing that to be honest.)

So far, so good, I think!

QUESTION: I’m planning to do the Quilt as you go method (QAYG) so attaching a large square of wadding to the 4 pieced squares, quilting it then attaching the quilted squares together. However, I keep reading on here about people using different brands of COTTON thread for quilting.

I tend to use Gütermann Polyester thread for most of my dressmaking projects even when sewing woven cotton, and cheaper Moon brand polyester threads for other stuff.

Why do you choose to use cotton thread on a quilt? If you’re machine quilting rather than hand quilting, would you still prefer to use cotton thread? I always believed that cotton thread breaks more easily?

I want to get it right for when I make my toddler quilt.

Patterns Discussion / Pattern Magic by Tomoko Nakamichi
« on: January 07, 2022, 12:36:17 PM »
Has anyone bought any of the Japanese design Pattern Magic books?

I’m thinking of buying one using my Amazon gift voucher received for Christmas but from the scarce info. provided online, it’s not really clear to me what the books include. I’m wondering if the designs can be reproduced and maybe used in bag making and other accessories?

Your Favourite Suppliers / Post Brexit - Irish Sewing Suppliers?
« on: January 04, 2021, 10:28:02 AM »
Following Brexit, we now have to pay import fees on top of hefty postage fees to buy supplies from the U.K., so I’m looking to compile a list of Irish (or EU) suppliers that I can purchase from instead.

I know I can buy from the German based Amazon.de so will be swapping to them too. (You can have the page translated into English)

Please post any recommendations here as I’m sure I’m not the only person struggling to find alternative sources.

Thank you.

Vintage Machines / Old Singer 28k - should I keep it?
« on: November 27, 2020, 18:29:46 PM »
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  DH spotted this in a local charity shop and bought it for me as my ‘Christmas present’.

He thinks he’s doing me a favour but I think it will end up being a dusty ornament. It has bits missing and I think he paid too much (€40) but he’s delighted with himself, so I’m pretending to be pleased for now.

I can clean it and it appears to work (handle moves and needle goes up and down), although I’ve never used that type of shuttle before.

Should I try to replace the missing bits and keep hold of it?
