Title: Gumtree... wish me luck!
Post by: Roger on April 28, 2018, 23:46:43 PM
I think/hope I’ve just bought a white featherweight off gumtree, hopefully in the post on Monday- shocking photography!

Shocking photography can be good, if you know what you're looking at and can see through it a bit, as a lot of people don't give it a second look.
I once got an excellent honey extractor pretty cheaply on e bay because of an awful photograph - still use it.  They usually go for a lot of money.
Fingers crossed you got a good'n.

Thanks Suzie and Polish!

Listed as a sewing machine...The pic was a blue box that had been opened showing the top of a white FW and a manual... apparently in great condition and working...

Who knows?

Ooh hope it's a good one.  I've only ever seen one in white.

Best of luck! I know some are especially looking for a white one or a "cellery" colored Featherweight. I fell for the black with the older type decor on the chromed plates, but I see why the white is in demand. A light colored machine has an advantage you might not thick  much of; it reflects light better and it makes it less dependant on external lighting. I notice it when going from a Bernina freearm back to my black 201. I shall probably never see a Featherweight at the right price, if I do, I would probably fix it up, try it a bit and then pass it on to someone who are in need of a portable machine. I still have my eye out for a 201K2, it's a full size machine and it would be a keeper.

Ooh, nice one - hopefully!  And presumably a very good price?  Lucky you  0_0

Pics will be needed...

Let’s say it was an uneducated price or too good to be true scam... but at a level I was happy to take a risk on... I’ll still be gutted (and the Mrs will kill me) if it’s a scam tho.

The top of it looked pretty white... who knows about the rest :)

I’d like to fix it up and give it a try... but I probably won’t keep it, FWs are a little petit and fussy for me... although I do like their steampunk style

When you need a portable I don't think there's much to complain about with a Featherweight; people have taken them on as a favorite and use it all the time.  There were even a table and an oval cabinet for them.  Because of the bargain price I expect there will be a lot of cleaning, oiling, and a bit of tending too ;- )

I suspect you’re right Arrow, there’s no details about what I’m receiving... i reckon I’ll be on the grunge hunt to get all the grot out of it...

Surestitch - definitely, I’ll get some pics together and share.

I’m trying not to get too excited because it’s probably not right...

Apparently it’s in the post... tracking number currently misplaced...

Fingers crossed, I always feel that putting something in the post is like trusting it to the gods themselves... who knows what if anything will arrive!

I hope you told seller to pack well, loads of bubble plastic, every item wrapped well, double casing... A white Featherweight has to arrive intact  :| The post is always nerv wrecking when it comes to sewing machines. Even courier services are dubeous, when you think it's a short trip in the back of a van it's often unexpectedly harshly handled. Fingers crossed and hope for the best  :P

I’ve got a bad feeling about this... it apparently went to the courier on Monday... no sign and the seller hasn’t responded to a couple of queries...

He might just be hands off and busy, Gumtree doesn’t incentivise as well as eBay...

No sign yet... which has me worried!

Thank you for the crossed fingers! I have mine crossed too... I’m hoping I don’t have to tell the Mrs I was dun!

I have often found that dispatched items can sit with couriers for a couple of days or more before they move, presumably for efficiency of delivery schedules.

Hope it turns up. A friend of mine spent £600 on an embroidery machine on Gumtree.. it was a scam but she got her money back eventually.

I hope you get the machine, it should be well worth the efforts to get in nice again. Scams doesn't happen very often, but delays and misunderstandings happens several times a year. One buy on ebay a decade ago was a scam, seller had loads of red marks which I should have noticed. Something when wrong, because seller had good feed back until the last few months before the account was closed. Another time I bought bee pollen from the UK and nothing ever appeared in my mail box. Seller was very angry when I contacted seller about it, and I suspected he actually never mailed anything at all. That's the two times I payed for something that never amounted to anything. There have been a few returns of payment for items that never turned up, always excluding p&p. Once a seller shipped an item a second time when the first one didn't appear for weeks, and after a months the second shippment arrived it w appeard in my mail box. Seller told me to just keep it. There's still a chance  it might arrive, but it is a bit worrying when seller doesn't reply to messages

I contacted someone on Gumtree ages ago and never got a reply. Turns out her reply went into my Spam. Maybe that's where your's went.

Oh that's so disappointing isn't it? Did you pay by PayPal by any chance? They are quite good at chasing things up if you haven't received your order?  Have you looked to see if your Seller is selling anything else at present? i.e active online?

Does seem a long time to wait. Mind you I get impatient if things take some time to come, after the date has passed.

Nope! It’s definitely an abject lesson in pay face to face or by PayPal... I suppose it could be second class which can take up to a really long time!

I'm still hoping it all works out, Roger, but don't feel too bad about it, you're not the only one here who's had those lessons to learn, even in trusted forums. :o

I never received a book in the days of TSF, I joined Paypal specifically to make the payment and foolishly sent the money as just a simple transaction, not one for goods and services. The book didn't arrive and was told it had been returned to sender by the post office as undelivered (despite no card being left here). She promised to resend but then had flu so I said, wait until resend in a few days when you feel better, then she stopped returning my emails and stopped posting on the forum. Several other members bought and received their books before me so I've never mentioned it until now - in case she turned out to have been seriously ill but it taught me a lesson, nevertheless.

I’ve reported it to Gumtree and the police and they are investigating... Gumtree must think there’s reasonable doubt because they’ve obviously emailed all the people connected to the advert!

Thank you Jackie! I’m sorry you had a similar experience!

I was once very ill for over a month, I had enough with just getting out of bed occationally and getting well. Having a shower was hard work, and I had a hard time just walking down the grocery store. I had problems connecting to the www and I just didin't have energy or concentration to sort it out until later. When I eventually logged into my ebay account I had a red mark and a case against me. It was a purchase I hadn't payed for and forgot. Back then the ebay form was a bit different, regular purchases not payed for within three days were alarming, not just auctions and winning bids. I remember there was something technical preventing me from paying it right away, invoice request etc., I can't remember all the details anymore, but I already had contacted seller about it a couple of times. It was sorted out within a couple of days, the red mark was removed, but it was a bit unpleasant having a blocked account the while it took. A lot of mails and replies had to be sent to ebay support and the seller. I don't think I have managed to move on from that knock, not the ebay thing, but the illness. I'm well again, back on my bike and doing the daily rounds I used to have. Something broke though and everything I have done since just hasn't been enough to move on. It was a lot of work to get my health back.

No, it was a scam. I’ve reported it to the police (fraud action) and to Gumtree.

The amount lost wasn’t huge and in crime terms was trivial. Smarts over here tho... but we live and learn and I’ll be opting out of non PayPal transactions.... and using the not friends payments more on gumtree.

Tbf the whole experience has left me pretty flat...

Sorry to hear this Roger, big or small you're looking at it the right way and it'll stick with you every time you buy which isn't a bad thing but very, very annoying nevertheless.

I've only used Gumtree once & paid on collection. What's the not friends payment option?
Title: Re: Gumtree... wish me luck!
Post by: LeilaMay on May 17, 2018, 11:37:03 AM
Oh I am sorry  :(

We'll keep looking for nice white featherweights together then (((hug)))

About the paypal thing - if you send money to "friends and family" they don't have to pay a fee to receive the money at the other end - i.e. they get all the pennies you sent. BUT you can't claw the money back.
If you send it as "payment for goods and services" the receiver pays a fee i.e. they do not receive all the pennies you send, but you do have a possibility to claw back the money if the service you receive is not to standard.

It also applies when you sell on ebay - not only do ebay take their fee but your payment via paypal also owes paypal a fee, which is taken during the transaction. So you end up with less than you might think!

Hope that made sense

Leila

I'm really sorry to hear that it was a scam, after you were so excited at getting this machine. The amount may not have been huge, but it sort of makes you lose confidence in using these sites again and that's not good.

You could just have walked away from it and not said anything but you have done the bravest thing by reporting it to the Police and to Gumtree. Hopefully that means someone else may not be scammed anytime soon by these same scammers.

I wanted a purse once (as did my friend) . The design of it was not available in the UK but was available in the US. I saw someone selling them on ebay (a trade seller) and the total cost with p&p wasn't an awful lot more than if it had been bought from the UK (but did have customs to pay on it though :'(). Anyways, the purses arrived and I just felt some of the quality on my purse (we chose different colours) didn't quite seem to be like the brand should be, small things but I felt the purse wasn't the brand and was a copy.

I had used Paypal. I emailed the Seller and she was adamant that it was the genuine thing (and she sells these in many countries). Anyway to cut a long story short. She paid back all the money plus p&p for my purse (the other one seemed fine) and told me to keep the purse.  it took a few emails etc and I did advise Paypal as well. But I got the money back.
Taught me a lesson too and left a bit of a bad taste too.

You need to remember you have bought several vintage machines before? And, you weren't scammed, so it was just one bad apple. So you must have been doing something right  :) That's the way I viewed it for myself too. But I try to use PayPal mostly as they are very supportive.

Thanks All,

It’s galling... at least it wasn’t eBay going rate for a featherweight... but as Brenda says that money has gone.

I have done well on vintage machine, and should be reducing my collection not increasing ;) and possibly doing more sewing:)

I really appreciate the support :)
