Hi,
I’m a very amateur sewer, so not sure on where to look for the fabric that I need for this project. I have a pair of excellent quality skinny “jeans” that I want  to widen to straight-legs. They aren’t really jeans, just made like them, and are a lightweight Cotton/polyester/elastane mix. Can you advise me on what search terms to use when shopping for this kind of fabric online?

Also, does it have to be exactly that mix of fibres? I imagine it’s the weight, and having a little stretch in it that matters most?

I’m nowhere near a fabric warehouse, so can’t really shop in person, which would be the ideal.

In the wardrobe / Curtain weights - how heavy?
« on: March 07, 2022, 11:39:30 AM »
Hello,

I’m going to hem some medium weight, thermal backed curtains. They don’t quite reach the ground, so adding weight with a thick hem is not an option. I’m going to use some weights, and could do with an idea of how much weight per corner. Some of the curtains are made from one width of fabric. Some have 2 pieces joined side by side. I’m assuming I need another weight at the bottom of each join? I’m willing to try trial and error, but I can see this taking ages as I have no idea what I’m doing. Any thoughts?

In the wardrobe / Fleece for oven mitt or tea cosy
« on: October 22, 2021, 12:59:33 PM »
Can anyone recommend a good thermal fleece for homemade oven mitts or a tea cosy? I wanted to use some old towelling, but have decided that a double layer of that would be too bulky in oven mitts. So then I wanted to buy some cotton fleece, but no one seems to sell it. I would rather not buy polyester, but it’s looking like that’s the only option.

In the wardrobe / Paper fusible interfacing?
« on: October 18, 2021, 16:38:02 PM »
Hello,

My local sewing shop, which I like to support if I can, has only what they called “paper fusible interfacing”. The instructions for the zippered pouch that I want to sew state that I should use woven fabric fusible interfacing. I’ve done a bit of research, and can’t decide if there is a good reason to not use the paper stuff. Will it survive washing in the future? I was planning to wash my fabric first, but assumed that anything with glue on it shouldn’t be washed, so maybe not the interfacing?

In the wardrobe / Is basting tape causing my machine to miss stitches?
« on: October 03, 2021, 15:15:22 PM »
I’ve had to unpick and start again on a curtain hem quite a few times now.  :faints: I’ve tried on my Singer 99k and Brother XL711. At first glance it looks like tension, because there is one line of thread lying flat top of the fabric. But on closer inspection, there are no loops coming up from below at all, so the stitches are not forming. If I lift the thread up, it comes away cleanly with no thread on it from the bobbin at all. It will go OK for a bit and then miss stitches again with no apparent cause. The only thing that I’m doing differently is that I’m using basting tape instead of pins. I have noticed that the needle shaft gets a bit gummy every now and then. When I tested for tension on a scrap of the same fabric (without basting tape), it was working OK, although admittedly I only sewed a few inches. Surely if basting tape caused this problem routinely, they wouldn’t be selling basting tape anymore, would they? Any thoughts?

In the wardrobe / Brother Pacesetter xl711 Golden Stretch Needles?
« on: September 04, 2021, 09:14:43 AM »
I’ve inherited my mother-in-law’s lovely Brother Pacesetter machine. Reading through the manual it states that I need their “golden stretch needle” in order to sew stretch fabrics. I found one offer for golden stretch needles on eBay, and I could buy those. But as this is quite an old manual now, I’m wondering if there now other names for such a needle that I can search for online, so that I have more choices of seller.

In the wardrobe / Singer 99k stitch length regulator faulty
« on: August 08, 2021, 20:39:54 PM »
Hello,
I’m hoping someone point me in the direction of help for a problem with my Singer 99k’s feed regulator. If I set it to 10 stitches per inch, it’s doing 20 per inch, etc. So the very biggest stitch that I can do is still pretty small. Apart from this issue, it’s working fine.  My normal source of help with machine problems is YouTube, but not this time, no one seems to cover this problem. I would take it into a Singer specialist that I know, but I’m not able to get out and about at the moment. Any suggestions please?

In the wardrobe / Beginner t-shirt template
« on: July 05, 2021, 11:07:55 AM »
Hello,
I’ve got a t-shirt in an unflattering colour, which is a lovely cut and fit. I would like to use it as a template to make more t-shirts. But as an inexperienced sewer, I’m wary of those YouTube videos, which suggest that you can fling together a garment from a template like this, and end up with something you’d actually want to wear. Does anyone know where I can find a guide to how to do this that might produce a good t-shirt? Thanks very much in advance.

Vintage Machines / Oil for 99k
« on: April 12, 2021, 21:38:18 PM »
Hello,
A bottle of oil that I just bought for my 99k was faulty. The nib was solid plastic too far down, so that the hole was much too wide when I cut it. I’ve already lost a third of the oil, when I knocked the bottle over, so I’m giving up on it.  It was from a quality Singer shop, so I expect this is just bad luck. I’m wondering about those oil pens. Gunold or Prym. Are they as good or better for oiling an 99k machine? I’m hoping they won’t have this faulty nib problem at least.

In the wardrobe / Singer 99k stitches gone weird
« on: January 31, 2021, 14:28:00 PM »
My Singer 99k was stitching beautifully until I sat down to carry on with my project yesterday. Nothing happened to the machine in between yesterday and when it was working. The stitches are no longer straight, each one is placed at an angle to the line of stitches. The tension looks wrong, like the needle tension needs to be tighter or the bobbin tension looser. But I haven’t touched the tension by accident  ( I have a note of what it should be). I have since changed the needle, changed the thread in both the top and bobbin reels, cleaned between the tension plates with knotted string, removed and reset the presser foot. If I turn the needle tension up nearly all the way to the top, the tension looks a little bit better, but the stitches are still askew. And it really shouldn’t need to be that tight. I’m stuck. Any ideas?

Fun with Fabric / Do I need to prewash this fabric?
« on: December 10, 2020, 14:14:19 PM »
I have bought some woven 100% cotton upholstery fabric, which was advertised as washable - one of my reasons for choosing it. It hasn’t been prewashed. I asked the seller if I should prewash it and she then said that they recommend dry clean only, although I could, at my own risk, wash it very gently & coolly. I know that fabric sellers sometimes say this about dry cleaning to cover themselves rather than because it’s really necessary. Do you think this type of fabric could and/or should be prewashed? I gather that prewashing is done because of shrinkage. Does woven cotton shrink? Obviously I’d rather not bother ( worried about unravelling and lazy!), but as it needs to fit snugly, I couldn’t afford shrinkage at a later date.

In the wardrobe / It seems I have a very short waist...
« on: November 21, 2020, 13:53:45 PM »
I’m working up to buying my first dress pattern, and have been following my sewing book’s instructions on how to measure myself and pick the right pattern type.  Hubby has measured my back waist and says it’s 14”, much to my consternation, because my book says this measurement is important, but the patterns in the example only have teen or junior patterns with a 14” back waist, and the rest of me definitely does not fit any of the bust/waist/hip measurements in those patterns! The nearest one to me is a half-size pattern, but the back waist to go with my other measurements would be 15.5”. Is this the one to go for? Can you work round such a big difference as a beginner? Are some pattern makers better for shorties like me?

In the wardrobe / Techniques on a really old machine
« on: October 27, 2020, 10:11:27 AM »
Good morning,
I have an old hand-cranked Singer, which does straight stitches only, and I love it. I find that sewing advice online, for example on YouTube, assumes that you have a modern machine, which can do all the fancy stitches. This is understandable of course. I muddle through, using my tiny user manual and adapting what I see online as best I can. But as a beginner, it would be great to have a thorough guide to what can be done, and how. YouTube has a few basic “how to operate” videos for old machines, but I haven’t found anything more detailed.  I’m hoping someone on this forum might be able to recommend a resource for older machines, like an old but still available book, or specialist forum. Any ideas?

House Beautiful / Basic how-to guides for a ham-fisted measurer
« on: August 15, 2020, 16:13:21 PM »

I’m a beginner, and I’m finding measuring fabric straight really difficult. For example, I spent hours trying to measure out the pieces for a large oblong cushion cover. I borrowed a metal right angle, not really designed for sewing, and the results improved, but still not perfect. I expect it’s because fabric moves and flexes, even when you think it hasn’t. I think if I could just get this skill right, the sewing but would be so much easier. I’ve had a scan around this website, hoping to find a section with a few idiot guides for beginners. Is there one on here? If not, can you recommend a site that would help? Thank you

Fun with Fabric / Long pile fleece easy hat or welly socks
« on: January 04, 2020, 08:51:47 AM »
Hello, I’ve got a gorgeously soft, thick, long-pile fleece dressing gown that makes me look like a barrage balloon, so I don’t wear it. I’m wondering if I could make a cosy winter hat and/or welly socks from it? My skills are very basic, and I’ve got an old fashioned Singer machine, so I can’t use it to sew stretch fabrics. I’m maybe getting a newer machine just to sew stretch fabrics if my new sewing hobby lasts, but in the meantime, I’m happy to hand sew if that would work better. Any ideas, or should I donate the robe to a charity shop instead?
