Access All Accessories / Email from Sew Modern Bags
« on: February 28, 2024, 09:41:48 AM »
Has anyone had an unexpected email from SewModernBags?

They recently had a bundle offer that I looked at but didn’t buy. Last night I got an email saying that the enclosed link would give me access to the patterns.

The salutation was just Hi but the email address looks legit, I’m worried it’s a scam but can’t be sure.

In the wardrobe / Swimsuit
« on: February 23, 2024, 20:00:03 PM »
My DD asked me to try and make her a swimsuit.

She is very tall, 6’ish and at the moment a bit overweight. She has most of her height in her body so struggles with buying a cossie without spending a fortune, which she is not in a position to do.

High street ones either threaten to expose her boobs or give her a very uncomfortable wedgie.

I started with
https://sinclairpatterns.com/search?q=Indigo&type=product
as they have a tall file option for all their patterns.

She requested more bum coverage and no opening in the back.
I’ve made her lots of Sinclair patters in the past so know where to adjust the pattern for her figure. My problem was the body length as the pattern is drafted for a person 5’9””.

I added 3” to each body piece, 1.5” above and below the waist, dropped the back leg curve by about half an inch, sewed it up and gave it to her, stressing that it was a first toile and to see how it goes.
It fits her really well, I am amazed and very relieved as swim fabric is a bit pricey to be making lots of toiles.

Provided it is still comfortable after she has actually swum in it, I maybe in production.

Now I just need to source nice swim fabric.

Sewing Machines / Resurrecting an old lady
« on: January 09, 2024, 12:05:41 PM »
Before I blow all my pocket money on a Jack HD2 I am wondering how my Singer 498 would cope with leather.

I’ve not used it for years and am wondering what I might need to do to get it running again. It was serviced not long before I upgraded and the plastic gears were replaced. I assume an oil and gentle cuddle should be enough and I’ll see how it is sewing before I chuck some leather under the needle.

I’m happy to pay for a service if I think it’s going to be strong enough for several layers of leather.

Patterns Discussion / Simple gathered dress for a child
« on: December 13, 2023, 11:57:50 AM »
I want to make my GD a simple gathered dress similar to this https://tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/product/tuc143233750
I have some awesome Wednesday Addams fabric she will adore.
I have a basic long sleeved tee shirt pattern that fits well so intend to just add a gathered skirt.
Is there any magic ratio for calculating the width of the gathered part or am I overthinking this as usual?

Embroidery and Embellishment / Water soluble tissue
« on: November 13, 2023, 23:44:44 PM »
On FB I’ve seen a video of someone drawing a design onto what looks like lightweight interfacing, putting it onto fabric and then embroidering the design. They then rinse away the ‘interfacing’.

This would be perfect for me to transfer a Japanese symbol onto a bag that I am sashiko stitching for a friend.

I’m not sure what I’m looking for, is it wash away stabiliser?

I ordered at about 2.00pm yesterday and the envelope was here when I got back from the gym this morning.

Access All Accessories / Flex frames
« on: October 25, 2023, 15:37:21 PM »
I'm hoping to make this
https://needleandanchor.com/aphrodite-versa-bag
as part of my DDs Christmas present but am struggling to find a 10" Flex frame in the UK.  I can get small purse sized ones but can only find larger ones in the States.
I've tried flex frames and facile frames as searches but nothings coming up, has anybody any better ideas

Patterns Discussion / Pattern for a Hawaiian type shirt
« on: October 11, 2023, 22:53:26 PM »
I’m looking for a pattern for a simple Hawaiian type shirt for my SIL.

He is a horror film buff and I have found some hideous fabric with various horror film characters on it, which he will love..

I’m thinking short sleeves, attached collar without a collar stand and no button band so I have a chance of pattern matching.

I’m not a fan of the big four and would prefer a PDF but have very little experience of men’s pattern for wovens.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Charity shop win!
« on: April 22, 2023, 14:26:04 PM »
I do love a good charity shop browse and have had a few bargains in my time but I think this morning’s win may by the best.

It appears to be complete. I bought it for the fabric but am now thinking I may make it as a quilt.

Access All Accessories / Wrist warmers
« on: December 30, 2022, 17:29:05 PM »
DD has problems with her wrists and needs to keep them warm and asked me for some new wrist warmers for work.

I usually knit them for her but I’m in the middle of
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/logwood-shawl
and know if I stop I won’t get started again, so I decided to sew her some.

I found https://sinclairpatterns.com/collections/womens-patterns/products/thumbhole-cuffs-add-on-pdf-sewing-pattern and made them with an attached cuff.  They give her warmth and support.

Think I might make myself some.

A Good Yarn / A well loved Snow Dog
« on: December 29, 2022, 18:44:30 PM »
Earlier this year I appealed for help sourcing a pattern for the Snow Dog and @Flobear came up trumps.

Well I finally completed him just in time for Christmas and he was a great hit.  He is looking slightly bedraggled now, thanks to lots of hugs from a 4yo.

Please excuse the rubbish photo, I am about as good at photography as I am at creating stuffed animals but the GKs loved him and that’s all that matters.

Technical Help / Overlocking
« on: November 20, 2022, 12:39:23 PM »
I am about to sew https://sinclairpatterns.com/products/sofia-shawl-collar-classic-sweater-pdf?_pos=1&_sid=fd493386e&_ss=r  out of a very scrumptious sweater knit.

I’ve fired up the O/L and just sewn a test piece.  It’s quite a thick fabric and when I take it out of the machine the seam is quite wavy but it presses flat.

Do I need to alter the differential feed?  I’m worried that the waviness will come back when I wear it but have never needed to touch the differential feed and am scared of messing things up. I had a smashing book that explained everything but I let someone borrow, it never to be seen again

A Good Yarn / Zig zag scarf
« on: October 28, 2022, 14:58:53 PM »
I really needed something mindless to knit and achieved it with this zigzag scarf.

It’s alternating pairs of rows in two  lots of Mille Colori Baby and I just love the contrasts and clashes of colour.  I drew the wool from the centre of the ball so really didn’t know what was coming next.

The colours are more vibrant than my limited photo skills show.

In the wardrobe / Lining choices
« on: October 01, 2022, 11:13:41 AM »
I’m looking to make https://itch-to-stitch.com/product/fisterra-top-dress-digital-sewing-pattern-pdf/ in a nice drapey viscose and can’t decide what to use for the lining.

I usually use a soft cotton lawn as lining for tops etc but when I made a lined top earlier this year I wasn’t happy with the way the viscose and the lawn felt together, so I’m a bit stumped.  I suppose another viscose is the way to go.

A Good Yarn / Crochet tutorial on YouTube
« on: September 22, 2022, 12:42:50 PM »
I’ve just been to see a good friend who recently lost her husband.  He was an invalid for many years and needed a lot of care, so now she is at a bit of a loose end and wants to learn to crochet to fill the evenings.

I will try and teach her but know someone recommended some YouTube tutorials. I think they were by two blokes but I can’t remember more than that.  Can anyone help me out?

I’m popping round tomorrow with some of my spare hooks and some yarn but won’t have time for a session till next week. I’m hoping if she watches YouTube I won’t have to teach her myself as I’m not good at explaining things
