I’d like to pick your brains and get input what you would like to see/do next year as contests.
We’ll definitely keep SWAKOP as an annual thing and I also like some contests, such as the florals, the scraps and the tartan one.
What else would you like to have?
-
You could base several on colours
I could share my projected Dogstar 'paper wasp' challenge here after Xmas? I'll probably let that roll through to about April as it's a potentially complicated make....
Pick up on Fabrickated's T shirt remodelling idea Transforming a t shirt (http://frame.bloglovin.com/?post=6666535045&blog=12326479&frame_type=none)
'cosy'
'accessories'
'small'
shamelessly nicking ideas from other sites/blogs, how about pinching the 'designer december' idea, to replicate/be inspired by a catwalk or designer piece?
Jungle january was always fun
so...furry/fuzzy/fluffy february?
holiday
blah blah blah I could go for hours lol

Stash busting?

Great ideas, keep em coming :loveit:

Ugly clothes. I could win one finally!

@Kwaaked, thank you for your contribution....
I had hoped for serious suggestions to make the contests useful and accessible for everyone here.

It was somewhat serious if it helps. I find I am in an ugly clothing style at the moment.
Doing a monthly contest, or bi-monthly you've got all kinds of things to pull from.
Jan -Feb: Date night for Valentine's day
March-April- Easter (4-21 this year)
May-June - Garden party, since a lot of weddings will be happening.
July-August- Preparing for winter with a Coat, looking forward to fall or a summer blowout with the final garment of the season.
Sept-Oct: Halloween...could do costume, orange, purple and/or black ensembles, a Pearlies contest incorporating some form of bling (and really, I kind of love them), Guy Fawkes day outfit for the bonfire (aka: outerwear)
Nov-Dec- Holiday dress, Christmas sewing, New Years Eve outfit
General ideas not specified to a month or time:
pick a celebrity/royal and create an outfit for some type of soiree
favorite shirt contest with an explanation of why this is your fave style as part of it
fabric specific contest and choosing one outside the norm for most people (be it natural, shiny, knit)
fancy pajama/loungewear
color you normally don't wear
modernizing historical component/dress
lingerie/slip
Day to night challenge
Match an accessory you love and have nothing to wear with it.
Some obviously can be changed to fit, like Pearly can be an embellishment challenge or some such.

Male garment, nightwear, outerwear, disguised repair. (And thank you for spending time and effort on this)
-
-White shirt
-Upcycle
-Runway inspired
-Fun with stripes
-Creative use of zippers on a garment
-Choose 4 challenge-choose 4 comfort level tasks-bound buttonholes/handstitched buttonholes, welt pockets, pick stitch, notched lapel, etc. Something to push the comfort zone.
-
I like the fun with stripes idea!
-
Self made trims: fringing, buttons, braids. appliques etc.
-
try a new skill
I spent some time this year and found it quite difficult to find out what was going on so maybe a time table locked thread and a general chat thread.

Thank you for the suggestion @Lyn-J, that’s a brilliant idea.
ETA: It will only be a rough guide though, I would like to be flexible with an odd idea or two :)

Sewing for babies/children/tweens/teens? A few of us have some littlies to sew for!
Sewing for The Other Half? Would help me be less of a selfish sewist. I have plans for him, but never have enough focus.
Sewing home dec? Would request a long time frame for that, those projects aren't the quickest. Fran has made some curtains and someone else has refitted their caravan seating in the past, so there is some goings on already. Perhaps a broad competition for those useful home items that aren't celebrated as much as clothing and quilts?
Art-teacher-chic? The Tilton Sisters? Alabama Channin style? Joe Brown's Inspired? They all use mixes of fabric, asymmetry and fabulous embellishments to make a garment pop. I usually stop once the bones have been done, so the embellishment part appeals to me. Again, longer run time appreciated due to the time it takes to do the finishing!
Lush fabric challenge? Velvet, satin, silk, chiffon, all those trickier to work with fabrics. I only say this because I really want an excuse to make a navy blue velvet wrap dress... ;)
SWAKOP for sure. Even if I don't end up finishing this year, it was nice to focus.

I like the fun with stripes suggesion 0_0
Pleats and tucks.
Added bling - beads, sequins, stones ....
Headgear - hat, bonnet, fascinator etc.
A reversible garment.
Complementary colours - an outfit or single garment with two (or more) different fabrics.
Sewing with lace fabric.
-
I loved this re/up-cycle contest.
Something like.... "The best thing, you could do with denim trousers..." (I have already 3 of them 0_0
-
Up-cycled
Fancy frock (or pants)
Shirt making (could be for any gender that one)
-
I would like to see some non specific contests such as 'something sparkly', or 'pretty in pink', or 'black and mysterious' - you get the picture, so that I could participate. I sew dancewear and tutus almost exclusively and have very little time to do things like repurpose a T shirt. :)

How does a posh frock contest sound to you @Lollipop? Would that be something you’d consider participating in?
PS: Please have a look at the entries of the Refashion and Upcycle contest. Nobody repurposed a t-shirt. On the contrary, everyone was really creative.
-
I wasn't being disparaging about any contest, or any entry to previous contests, Manuela, but I thought that was one of the suggestions mentioned. I will continue to follow the contests with interest. ;)
-
Setting a specific colour has already been done a cople of times - we had an all white competition right at the beginning of TSP, and then the Sew Red in memory of Veggiegrow. Maybe another colour?

How about a Little Black Dress contest - those who don't wear black could opt for 'their black', i.e. navy or dark grey @BrendaP?
ETA: I just thought of something: Having the Blues - anything from garments, Darkside to accessories goes, as long as it is blue. That might also suit @Lollipop
-
I do like the sound of having a few contests with themes. like the tartans, florals, a color like you mention or a theme -here's a hare brained one just for the concept "Race to Space" or any of many better themes that is generic content wise so anyone can enter. I've really enjoyed seeing the results for those. We know usually a garment will "win" but that's not the real point is it. It's more about participation and sharing. And pincushions. Pincushions should always be included. Always. ;)

@Manuela
Did I see a suggestion of UFO's to complete within 2019?
(Perhaps I imagined it...)
Anyway, it provoked me to look for my UFO's yesterday and in a 2 hour search I have identified:
1 x Burda Dress
1 X Cashmerette Dress
1 x SyleARc top
1 x Vogue waistcoat
1x Kwiksew corduroy pinafore dress
1 x turquoise summer trousers - lost the pattern envelope so don't know the make....
1 x RTW taken apart (done) black trousers to recut with burda pattern
1 x RTW taken apart (done) pinstripe trousers to recut with burda pattern
Its interesting that a lot of the above projects are quite close to being finished - so why do I put off completing them?
(Its a similar syndrome of the unfinished DIY snagging list .)
Happy New Year to all.
Annieeg
-
@annieeg, you spotted it correctly. However, that’ll be a year-long sewalong with the aim of completing as many UFOs as possible :)
-
@Manuela
I'm going to do my best to join in the January 1st-31st Stash busting contest, and I have some patterns/fabrics identified.
:D
-
I only have the one UFO...and it's been on a dress form for 6 months.
-
Is there a contest for March? If so what is it?
I try to play along when the parameters are something within what I might sew anyway.
-
There will be the cushion cover swap (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,6556.0.html), it's not a contest, but it will be great fun :)

@SewRuthieSews ,look here for the full list (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,6006.0.html), of monthly and longer ones. First post.
March is sewing for the little ones, including garments for your pets or the 18" dolls and over March & April is the extended contest, sewing for men (clothes).
-
The extended one comes at a good time, my stepson is engaged.
No date set, but I have OH agreeing to wearing something other then a tee shirt, so I am all over this like white on rice.
Depending on when the wedding is, I may enter more then one. Of course, I say this, but I never actually take photos.
-
Thanks @Renegade Sewist, not really got children/pets who want things sewing for them but I could do something for DBF, maybe some funky shorts.
