In the wardrobe / Re: Making a full length flared pencil skirt
« on: March 22, 2024, 13:28:49 PM »
Just adding my pennyworth. You can make the flare by either inserting godets onto the pattern from below the knee, so you add the volume before cutting the pieces and that way there is no seam at knee level or you can add the flare in the form of a circle with the inner diameter the same as the hem line width, however to get the stripes you are making what we flamenco makers call a canastera - basically a fancy name for gathered tiers as in a gypsy skirt.  If you are looking for a skirt with a train there is one on Folkwear ( it's listed as a flamenco bata de cola dance skirt - but it's not long enough to dance with, but would make a pretty fancy dress thing.)  I've been making them for such a long time now I don't use a pattern, I cut by eye and measurements, but this is where I'd start in your place.

Technical Help / Re: do I need to lengthen the back bodice?
« on: March 18, 2024, 17:22:45 PM »
If the gaping was at the front armhole originally (?) and you got rid of that, which has left the armhole too tight then I'd suggest a small FBA which should fix the front gaping and then the armhole should find it's correct level again and then you back wrinkle/drag lines will go.

It looks a bit tight over the hips too, so that might give a bit of drag. Undo the seams down into the hips too.

Google 'Supermend' powder. It works a treat. Sorry I can't do a link - don't know how. Economical and effective.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]   Another one bites the dust - only 3 sets of these - hockeystick skirts, stretchy mesh gathered neck tops with shirred wrists and applied frills to match the hem of the skirt. Eagle eyes will notice the seam on the waist band - this is because I put it on Dolly backwards and couldn't be a...d to turn it round!

Massacre
Probably teaching the chicken how to lay the egg here but a book I've bought recently mentions tying an elastic band around the body to find the natural waist.
Is that your gin and tonic I see lurking in the big bottle with a blue lid?

That is a great idea @Bill and it does the job very well, however we are talking people here who in the main don't even possess a tape measure, let alone a length of elastic.  I suggested they must all be able to rustle up a bit of string to tie and then measure on a ruler of some sort.

Darn, I should have moved the emergency supply! Now you know my little secret , sigh.

@grndkntrl  the lace is bonded but was still very thin so every lace panel is interlined to match the weight of the black panels, which are various black pontes, jerseys and even some drill! These dresses were really made with low budgets!

What is surprising me is just how high some girls wear their waists. They did their own measuring - I say no more!

So the octopus idea is great - that's halloween sorted!

Here's the first one and the spotty one is a scrap left from the tops ( already done and delivered) to get an idea of the rendu.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

SO, change of project.  There are 9 of these beauties to massacre. I shall be removing the bodice and turning them into skirts, there will be repositioning of zippers and addition of white frills somewhere to link to the tops .  Here is the before   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
