Technical Help / Re: Under collar of a jacket
« on: February 07, 2023, 16:27:24 PM »
I've made this pattern and the collar part worked well.

I had terrible trouble with the welt pockets though, managed the first one fine. Then tried to follow the same instructions again and ended up with a pocket that went upwards. I recut the front and did zipped pockets instead!
@SewRuthieSews - I didn’t fancy doing welt pockets with this fabric, it is a very loose weave and frays like the devil so I chickened out of that challenge. I did consider putting in side seam pockets but forgot about that when cutting out!

Details like this always say to me that it’s a well thought out pattern.  I hope it is.  Look forward to seeing your progress.
@Ohsewsimple - I think the pattern in general is well thought out, except for the fact that it didn't allow for shoulder pads. I had to adjust the shoulder seam slightly and armscye to allow a little extra room for them. I'm not keen on jackets without them.

Progress photos tomorrow.

I've actually made this pattern @Fabric Lover but unfortunately as not recent I can't even remember it being on the bias but it did turn out well, although if there is a next time I might cut out the dip at the back.
The only change I'm making to the back is to take out the inverted pleat. I'm putting shoulder pads too, which the pattern doesn't include.

Oh okay that makes sense, thanks @Ploshkin and @Missie I feel happier now that I understand why it's cut like that.

I'm making a moto style jacket using McCalls 7694 https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/87927
The surprising thing is that the under collate isn't cut on the fold but is cut in two on the bias. Does anyone know what might be the reason for this? I've cut the rest of the jacket out and am finally making some progress with it but haven't cut the last piece out yet since I've been wondering about this. The fabric is a cream check bouclé.

I have actually started on a jacket with a vague plan to follow up with coordinating items, but my plans are generally quite loose and rarely are followed through.

Going to try better this time though!

I tried to compete in a competitive event on here but struggled (due to my ineptitude with all things technological!) to get the photos in the right place. 😒

Thanks all.
Lovely!
Have you got any flattish ankle boots, so you can be comfortable and still wear the dress?
That's exactly what I wore, @SewRuthieSews 👍

This is Vogue 8685 https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/42479 that I made earlier this month. You can't really see the fabric so well in this photo but it's teal with a lovely sparkle from Abakhan. Just agonising over what shoes I can wear with them to go out in tonight as my toes are still recovering from an operation in December. The sensible thing would be to wear some trousers and heavy boots but I'm really want to wear the dress!  :boohoo:

This is the second dress I've finished this year so my pledge to abstain from fabric buying until I've cleared out 20 metres from my stash must be motivating me!

I used Butterick 6388 https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/81224
and while it is thicker than the pattern photo seems to be, it has turned out reasonably well.

I wanted it a bit longer than it was drafted but could only add a slight extension which meant I had to put a false hem on it. I'd also tried, unsuccessfully, to match the pattern on the   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  front seams so was struggling to fit it in. Also had to piece together the semicircular yoke which should have been cut on the fold.

It's cosy though been useful today with our cold weather in the North!

  I never even thought of that!

Wow, they look amazing!  Were the sequins itchy to wear?  I love the colour, don't think I've seen dark green sparkles before.

@Nevis5 Yes they were itchy where the sequins were on the inside of the trousers, I realised this when I was trying them on before finishing the seams. So I then had to unpick all those sequins which were in the seam allowances, sounds a nightmare but in fact it took about a bit more than an hour. Worth it to be comfortable and also not to have a problem with my overlocker!

On the inside of the waistband I used a strip which ran down one side of the fabric which was sequin-free. I imagine that whatever machine was used to put the sequins on couldn’t do the full width of the fabric, but I found this quite useful for that purpose.
