Well hello @grndkntrl, have a good look round, we'll soon whet your appetite for asking questions. I'm lanky too especially for a woman (6') and a retired qualified tailor and still find I've forgotten how to do something or even have to ask things I don't think I ever knew. Join in, we never laugh at or criticise our pals to which you are now one of

It's great you've managed to find us @Anne Warren, a lot of us love vintage machines, myself I've got quite a few. I can't remember off the top of my head how many I've got without going upstairs to have a look that's how bad it's got all ranging from around the 1940's up to 2010, I hate the later one but it has its uses!
We've got a good quilters section we call the "dark side" where you'll find loads of help if or when you need it.

The Haberdashery / Re: What needles?

Just bought a Brother A16 and wonder if anyone can help with needle choice for this fabric pls

Sorry @deetee have had to remove your link to Woodland Farics. You need to have been a member for 2 weeks and have made 25 posts before inserting links, as you signed up to in the membership agreement.

I'd suggest 100's or 110's, don't be tempted to buy cheap needles, they'll cost you more than good ones like schmetz in the end.

Hello there and welcome from me too, I'm saying nothing about getting more machines. Why?  ::thinks:: because I know about all about how it happens .

Looking at the pic it doesn't look like there's much width around the hem area, unless you're going to make it quite short I'd be inclined to do double width and tack it to the bodice before you machine it and see how much stride room she's got, if it's too much you can always take some away from the sides without too much frustration for you. That's all saying you don't want to make it as a surprise for her  ::thinks::

In the wardrobe / Re: Fabric Stash of doom

@Lowena it's time, apart from having to try and look after my disabled son who lives in the next village, DH's spine is crumbling making him physically disabled he's also recently been diagnosed with the early stages of dementia.
I've been thinking about bringing a couple of my machines downstairs so I can maybe have some me time on them but again it's finding time to even do that  :boohoo:.

Fun with Fabric / Re: How to cut out difficult fabrics
« on: December 11, 2023, 19:13:37 PM »
I feel your pain. I like to cut out on the floor I've found the best way that works for me is to banish the dog from the room and push dozens of pins through the fabric about a cm away from the selvage and raw edges right through and right into the carpet and use weights not pins to hold the pattern in place.
The more you use fabrics like that you'll find the best way for you. Sorry if that's not very constructive help to you, it's just sharing the way I've worked out for myself.

Ooooh I wish my stash looked like that, I've got 2 massive garden storage trunks crammed full in the loft, another one under my sewing table and a pile of fabric on the floor at the side of it, the table is a large farmhouse style table, plus other pieces pushed into wherever I could find a space  :embarrassed:. My haberdashery stash would likely last me what I've got left of this life and probably another two besides  :S.

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Re: Hen's Hideout...or sewing room.
« on: November 06, 2023, 21:08:30 PM »
That's a beautiful room, I so wish I could keep mine so clear like that. My main problems are that my DH is a hoarder, not of useful stuff just crap (I'm very sorry to say he's got dementia)! I get sick of seeing it and the clutter it creates so I dump everything in there so I can slowly sneak it out (he doesnt go in there, he accepts it's my space). The other problem is I collect sewing machines and I've got too many I do use them all when I get chance to get in there so it's stuff I do use not rubbish.
