Like really isn't the right term for such a memorial. I remember that awful day, and I remember the sacrifice of our troops that followed seemingly for nothing. MY son came home, some of his friends did not.

The quilt is sombre and magnificent.

Thank @Deafoldbat  xxx

Cant believe that that incredibly contemporary quilt was made around 120 years ago ....  Am I reading that correctly?

@Iminei Yes, your calculations are correct. The turn of the 20th century gave birth to much of what we consider contemporary art and design. Picasso and others came into their own in the 1910's with the birth of Cubism and there were influences that led up to that.

In 1903, the Weiner Werkstätte was founded by craftsmen from different trades that laid the foundation for Modernism. They organized in many cities around the world.

I've been a modernist since I can remember (age 4?), influenced by my Grandmother's taste which always tended towards clean lines accented by skilled hand work. (She was born in 1915). She was a woman of extremely limited means and very little education, but she had an "eye".

@Renegade Sewist no problem.

The IQM had a stand and quilts from their collection at FoQ. Had a chat with the 2 ladies there. I like to see quilts that have 'lived' a bit.

Star Quilt by Bertha Meckstroth

Bertha Meckstroth created more than 140 quilts between 1916 and 1933. Meckstroth exhibited her quilts in a solo exhibition at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. Trained in sculpture at Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Meckstroth called quilts “sculpted cloth” and she used trapunto, reverse appliqué, layering, and embroidery to create three-dimensional textures in her work.

'Eagle... a stunning example of a center medallion American eagle and shield quilt, using the Great Seal of the United States in its design motif. Dated 1814, it is one of few surviving chintz appliqué and mosaic pieced quilts of the post-War of 1812 era.'

Cigarette silks, cigar silks, and tobacco flannels were all collectible items collectively referred to as “Tobacciana,” and were used as marketing tools by tobacco companies. Women used these pieces of decorative fabric to create pillow covers and quilts.
