Brenda P's entry

A dress for myself

Pattern used
A Franken-hack.  The top half is the princess bodice from "Gertie's Ultimate Dress Book (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gerties-Ultimate-Dress-Book-Fabulous/dp/1617690759/ref=asc_df_1617690759/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=255630880467&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14468587190056380980&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006944&hvtargid=pla-420882407934&psc=1&th=1&psc=1)" and the skirt is Simplicity 2449 (https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/36157), view D/E

What  fabrics you used
A stretch jersey printed with the plaid design, quite heavy, almost Ponte but much stretchier.  It came as the biggest piece in a 10kg lucky dip bag from Immanuel's

A short description on how you made it/problems overcome/etc.
Pattern matching on stretch fabric is the work of the devil
I managed the vertical seams including the back zip but the bodice had to be eased onto the skirt and it's a bit stretched out there.

Sewing on the overlocker was easy but the coverstitcher really didn't like the fabric and I ended up top stitching the neck with the regular machine.

In hindsight I think it might have been better to cut the neckline a little lower, omit the zip and facings and do a bound neck.

It is a dark coloured fabric and definitely needs to be worn with a brightly coloured scarf!

On the plus side there was enough fabric left to make a pair of winter leggings for Pilates.  I used KwikSew 3636 (https://www.sewessential.co.uk/misses-leggings-kwik-sew-sewing-pattern-3636?gclid=Cj0KCQjwnqH7BRDdARIsACTSAdvKIlOJ1O5VeIp66zR1OgGzrmQcrGrmb8MDir0I-rnm5sC1LrqZWlwaAvQ9EALw_wcB) with my own adjustments including making the body longer to sit on the natural waistline which I find more comfortable.  Will normally be worn with a teeshirt outside.

Lilian's Entry

What is it and for whom – Dress for me

Pattern used  - Prima exclusive July 2020

What fabrics you used  - A woven fabric, not sure what it is but it's quite fine, cotton/viscose feel.  It was free at my sewing group, a lady brought loads of fabric to give away.  There was just enough to cut this dress and a matching face mask.

A short description on how you made it/problems overcome/etc. - As per pattern, a straightforward make with some small adjustments to shoulder as I have square shoulders.  Adjustments for a bit more shape. All edges overlocked as the fabris frays easily.

The plastic on mu dressform shows through fine fabric :(

Starryfish's Entry

Burda 6291 skirt with front pleats. Maroon wool with black check.
I made view B, the slightly shorter version, but omitted the self fabric belt. The wool is too thick, and it would have added too much bulk at the waist.

As usual it is fairly dark in the only place in the house I can take photos. The skirt is part of the 6PAC I will be entering in the competition. It is a nice winter weight in our not that warm house (It would be if DH would turn the heating on for longer).

Syrinx's entry.

Alas now the only one!

Pinafore dress with matching shaped face covering.

The pinafore pattern is KwikSew 4138

I used a Lewis and Irene quilting cotton for this. I fancied a lightweight pinafore but one that wasn't too flmisy so this fabric was perfect. The silver/grey line has some shimmer to it. Annoyingly the checks are printed on bias not on grain so the whole outfit is on point!

It came together relatively well, only one adjustment to the pockets as I have found this pattern makes the pocket openings too large/pocket itslef not deep enough. But then I just love big pockets! The fabric check was on the bias so I had to change my picture in my head to have the checks at a jaunty angle. Luckily the printing was pretty accurate and solid so it being on point wasn't too much of a pain. Pattern matched the pocket on the bib. Spent an age gathering the fabric for the waist so that it was neat and even. I still have issues with this pattern regarding the waistband parts as one end is longer than the other but it's a tad tricky to get it to work properly and the r/l markings are not helpful. Still I got the lapped zip in and the button flap no problem. This is the firt time I've made the skirt version and I really love it as a pattern for a skirt. Tempted to use the skirt pattern solo and just make a wider waistband at some point.

A very poor picture of me wearing it

And an amusing one of me wearing it yesterday in a cafe in London whilst on a zoom call. Probably the best picture of the colour

We have a tie!

I am awaiting word from the adjudicators in case you both have to Lipsync for your lives.

Meanwhile I'm declaring two winners.

CONGRATULATIONS LILIAN AND SYRINX!

Many congratulations to you both! Very well deserved - especially as the standard was so high - every entry was excellent.

It really was!  I would happily have voted for any of them.*  In the end it came down to 'If you were told you could have any one of these in your size, which would you choose?'

* Hey, @wrenkins - maybe some day we could have a contest where we had the same number of votes as entries...?!   ;)

Fewer entrants did not make it easier to choose.

Congratulations to you both.

An excellent plan! That wouldn't give me a breakdown at all.  0_0
I had a terrible time choosing.  :S
