Title: Me and colours again.
Post by: wrenkins on August 01, 2020, 12:24:26 PM
I'm going to do our resident rower a 'going away' blankie and I have decided on made up a pattern. It's going to look like a rowing track. Pretty sure that's what it's called.  :[
As usual my issue is colours. So far I have lots of versions of this (https://www.doughtysonline.co.uk/marble-magic-turquoise.html) in my basket with a few ripples batiks thrown in for good measure. The batiks have hints of greens and purples. The inspiration for my pattern came from this. (https://www.missouriquiltco.com/land/tutorials/block-strip-quilt/index.html?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=lp&utm_campaign=t134) I don't want to over-complicate it but what else do I need, if anything, to make it not dull.
Thank you for your bright ideas. :)

I'm hoping to make the negative space a bit more positive by using strips of blues and turquoises to make up the blocks. Maybe even with some curved piecing (maybe not!  :o).
I'm unsure of how light to go and how dark but I want to get away from that very flat look. I do love it but I too am afraid.  :)

I rarely dive in and give my opinion as I'm afraid of being shouted down and made to feel stupid by those who profess to know ( looking towards Dorset and Kent )
I'm sure whatever you choose will be lovely and much appreciated

@wrenkins  So you have got a lot of turquoise batik/splodgy with hints of purple and green for the big squares.

For the accent colours (the narrow strips) you should be looking at the opposite side of the colour wheel.  In this case it's orange (or red-orange or yellow-orange).  If you want the strips to jump out at you go for bright orange(s) if you want it more subdued go for a darker version; burnt orange or orangy brown.

@Lowena you've paid your taxes, your opinion is as valid as anyone else's!
The bars are going to be boats and will likely be dark purple with black oars. Pointy parts shaping to be determined.  0_0
I'll empty Doughty's and see what I get.  :faints:

I really like those colours @wrenkins. I'm gathering ideas for my first quilt and thinking of water and swimming pools as inspiration for mine  :)

No patterns?

I've been thinking  I love the colours and don't think it needs orange or anything bright...it's for a chap after all!.
However, the key will be the quilting of the larger "seascape" areas........waves??

No patterns except in the piecing. It's just water and a boat so yes...there'll be waves in some form. It's lovely in my head.  :[ If any orange goes in it it'll be the lane markers but we'll see.  I don't want it to be 'a picture' because I'm not artistic enough for that. Just a representation of boat, water and banks (?).

I think you need to draw it out with colouring pencils first so you can visualise it properly and work out where/if a contrasting colour is needed. You don’t always have to if you have enough variation in shades and tones in your colour palette - it is a different effect. At the moment I’m with Lowena and can’t really see an orange working. I like to use white or WOW to ‘lift’ a quilt

This is more or less my colour scheme with more aqua than silver grey.
I understand the shout-outs for orange but I'm not making traditional blocks so don't need the contrast. I'm trying to make it as uncontrasty as possible without being dead flat. I can see it clearly in my head and I hope I can do it justice when it comes to making it.  :S

Sounds as if you could do wth a good browse around a fabric shop looking at colours

If its any help when I was stuck for colours I got some paint charts from a DIY store and used them to colour match. Sorted out what I wanted , stapled the colours I wanted into a note book and took that around with me until I found what I wanted

Like you sometimes I can see what I want in my minds eye but not find it.
Look forward to your results

My nearest fabric shop is probably closer to you than it is to me @Bjay  0_0 We have none here. There is one nearish to my mum with very limited quilting stuff but that's over 80 miles away. It's probably a good thing because if I went into a fabric shop I might never come out again. :faints:

I like the light silvery grey, it highlights ... like sun sparkles on water, could you add some small random squares of silver around the place ...

Ive got some great lame, you could have, it would need to be interfaced but I think it could add something special.

Thanks @Iminei. A couple of my fabrics (still in mijn winkelwagen) have silver sparkles on them. I feel dead smart now.  :) I must be on the right track.
Silver lame?!?! You been in the dressing up box again???  ;)

If not traditional blocks then I'd focus more on the quilting threads to add anything extra if you need it.

I'm all for quilts with similar colours!

I went off to check that my basket was still warm and popped a couple of silvery threads in there.  ;)

I've got several metres of gold lamé somewhere in the stash.  DD gave it to me, she acquired it when she was coerced volunteered to make dance costumes for the whole class.

Gold lamé won't look right in @wrenkins 's quilt but might go with the special buttons she has ordered :button: :button:

The last/only time I used lame was to make the capey part of a Roman centurion's outfit. I was nominated wardrobe mistress and made red tunic with gold sash and blue tunic with silver seqinny organza stuff. Very dashing they looked too. Mine was white with various strips and straps of gold bullion fringing to pretend I was covering my modesty. I loved fancy dress!  :loveit:

@hernibs the problem is I know what Lough Erne looks like at six in the morning. It's kind of difficult to make it look anything other than bleak!  0_0 I also know what it looks like with the sun dancing off it and the most amazing sunset and that's the most beautiful sight on earth.  :loveit:

Waxing poetical there @wrenkins !  Another vote for the blues silvers, greys.

I can just see this in my minds eye @wrenkins

Rectangles of various blues with the odd end square in silver, a few rectangles depicting the boat/canoe/whatever (will that have a pointy end?) and vertical serpentine stitch of quilting in blues and the odd silvery strand all over .... just gorgeous!!

OMG! That woman can see inside my head!  :faints:
It's a proper rowing boat, Steve Redgrave Matthew Pincent stylee so very pointy at both ends but I have a cunning plan for that.  :ninja:

If you wanted to try something using the correct fabrics (cos you need to see if the colour works) and a long stitch length for easy unpicking (If it doesnt or you hate it)

You could try ... (Measurements, finished, for example only)

12" boat made of ....

Dark Purple 1" pointy bit
Dark Purple 5" x 2"
Coral 2" sq
Dark Purple 3" x 2"
Dark Purple 1 " pointy bit

(or whatever proportions needed)

Dya see what it is yet?

I'll have to see if I can find a dark enough purple. It needs to be nigh on black which might be the colour of the oars... When my order arrives I'll see what it needs to look like. Goodies (nearly) always look better in the flesh.  :loveit:

I have around 25 quarters, both fat and skinny, sitting in a heap on the ironing board and I have squinted at them through my lil red square. Now what?
I have graduated them from light to dark which has mixed up the blue/blue/blue/green/blue/aqua... Was that what I was meant to do with it? Is it for determining values?
My next obstacle is how to bleeend rather than hop in steps and stairs.
Why can't I just buy a pattern and follow it? I was the same when I was knitting. It's this but I've changed the collar and the length and put pockets on.  :S

Looking at fabrics through a red filter is supposed to help you work out which are the lightest and which are the darkest;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKF_H6MGL3U (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKF_H6MGL3U)

(https://www.kalquilts.com/SN1307/Notions/Ruby-Beholder) (https://www.kalquilts.com/SN1307/Notions/Ruby-Beholder)

I can't understand how they work.  A red filter will surly only allow red light through but not (much) green or blue.  That means that any fabric (or other surface) reflecting red light will apper bright/light and any fabric reflecting green or blue will appear dark.  I'm sure you would get different results if you use a green filter or a blue filter.

BTW I'm talking RGB primary colours as in TV screens and computer/phone monitors for the filters.

I've used it with groups of different colours and just didn't get it. As you say the physics doesn't make sense. These are all deep blue through to pale aqua and everything in between so it worked quite well I think for darker and lighter. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.  8)
Thank you @BrendaP.

@wrenkins

Here, to back up my theory that the ruby colour viewer is a load of toot only does part of the job, here are four photos of my computer screen showing exactly the same image each time.  One is unfiltered, one has a red filter, one a blue filter and the other a green filter placed in front of the screen.  As you can clearly see each filter darkens and blocks out the colours opposite to it.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Using a red filter makes blues and greens look dark.
Using a green filter makes reds and purples look dark.
Using a blue filter makes reds and oranges look dark.

The best way to grade lights and darks is to get a black and white photo, most photo editing programs can do that.  But be aware that yellow is much lighter than blue and purple, as the screenshot (sans filters) of the B&W version of the same image shows.

Really enjoying these lessons on how to colour match  by using black and white filters.
Very interesting and informative
Thanks

These are my doins. As you can see number 15 got hoofed to out past number 21 on the darkness scale.
Some may get ditched along the way and there are little sparks of orange/yellow/pink to go in. I just wish I would start.
Seven groups of four fabrics. Group 1:- 1-4, Group 2 :-5-8...
Six blocks across and five (giant) blocks down so....
Row one will have.. 1&2 with a smidge of three coming in.
Row two................2&3 .......................four
Row three............. 3&4 .......................five
Row three............  4&5........................six
Row four................5&6.........................seven
If I don't write it here I'll never understand the scribbles in my notebook.  :S
These are not rules but guides so here's hoping. I'm going to need a design wall floor

you need more darks

Not necessarily, some of the mids are quite dense. It depends on the effect you want.
I'm doing a quilt at the moment which is about 85% pale colours, with a pop of bright or dark here and there.

I don't think I would add any more darks , but possibly more of the mid range if you have any.

This is fast becoming a labour of  <3.
Oar boy had better appreciate it or I'll pull one of his rowlocks off and hit him with it.  :S
