Tech Know How / Why?
« on: September 22, 2020, 10:03:42 AM »
Why, when photos are included does my tablet download them?
I don't want to keep them, just have a quick look. It's gumming everything up :angry:I
@Acorn @Mr Twingo anyone??

I know that the bom is in full swing and has attracted new darksiders. I am interested in where we go from there.
There don't seem to be many darkside projects in the pipeline. Is anyone making a quilt? Cushions? Table linen? Bags? If so, please share your works in progress, it's good to share and it will encourage others.
I know @Iminei is immersed in machine embroidery and @rubywishes has been fpping away like a good 'un but has anyone been hiding their light under a bushel??
I shared my wips recently and hope to have a complete quilt or two to show before long.
Had anyone got any ideas to take the dark side forward...winter's coming with more time indoors to craft....suggestions???

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / A rare occurrence
« on: August 28, 2020, 16:36:39 PM »
Today I have decided upon a very rare action.
I'm putting aside a project as it is just too frustrating!!
I always finish what I start but Elizabeth Hartmans Under the Sea quilt has defeated me :'( :'(
I measure, remeasure, cut carefully and stitch accurately...so...why do the flipping blocks turn out different sizes and why do some components not fit??!! :headbang:
I'm now off to wrestle with 3 finished quilt tops which need sandwiching  :scream:
I May never return!!! :faints:

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / How did you learn?
« on: August 13, 2020, 14:12:03 PM »
Until 2012, when I was 65 I had never used a sewing machine. I went to an "academic" school and no one in my family sewed. As an adult my family and career took over my life.
I had always admired patchwork and quilting and it was an ambition of mine to try it. I knew no one who could teach me and as I haven't got a visual brain, t' interwebby thingy was no good.
I knew nothing about machines so I went to Franklins, told them how much I had to spend and what I wanted it for...bought a Brother and The Quilters Bible and taught myself.
I was immediately hooked and 8 yrs and a bigger Brother later it's a big part of my life.

Clickbait, moi?
This is a serious query. When making flying geese blocks, how much of the background fabrics do you cut away?
I keep reading that one should leave the background fabric on place to aid stability. However, I have usually cut away both fabrics as it is less bulky to sew.
What do you do?
Does it matter to the finished quilt?
Thanks peeps......for my sins I'm doing a whole quilt using the bloody things  :D

.....and I wondered what had happened to everyone's temperature quilt, which we made last year?
Did they all get finished?
Have they been used?
Mine was finished, as I can't bear ufos but it lies languishing in a bag in the boxroom.
I doubt it will ever be used, largely due to its size, but it is interesting to look at the temperatures we had last year.
Although it is effectively banished to storage, I won't get rid of it as I enjoyed the making and it's a snapshot of history.
Where is your quilt now?

I want to make a double bed quilt and I need help.
Nothing I'm seeing gives me inspiration. I need a block or blocks which are not too fiddly but will look impressive.Colours, dark blue, teal and a variety of oranges.
Can you give it your best shot and enthuse me please.
I made Kenoras (I think) final block but found it dreadfully fiddly.
Simple (ish)  and striking... Not bland and boring!!!  I'm stuck

Does she have to make her patterns as difficult and wasteful as possible???
I'm doing her Awesome Ocean quilt and have just wasted 3 hours on a whale block......which had to be thrown away!!!
I swear I follow the instructions to the letter, but, somehow amongst all the fiddling and faffing the dimensions go to pot!!
Never again!!!!

Current Projects / Ideas wanted please.
« on: April 22, 2020, 12:40:29 PM »
While I don't have a proper stash, I do have a variety of batik fat quarters.
They are all colours but iirc blues, purples and fairly dark mixed are quite prominent although there are all sorts. As they are fqs the pattern would have to be one which doesn't need oodles of one fabric.
Any ideas of patterns please? Either blocks or an integrated pattern.
I need ideas...asap as I'd like to start when my latest quilt is bound.
Thanks <3

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / UFOs
« on: March 08, 2020, 12:38:08 PM »
How do you cope with UFOs?
I think it's wasteful to begin something new when there is a project unfinished and can't bring myself to do it.
I'm desperate to move on from my Temperature quilt....has everyone finished theirs?? but want to finish it quickly.
I thought I might bag it out, waddingless, just to get it done and dusted, as it won't be used.
How do you deal with projects you have fallen out of love with?
The "NewLow" is brimming with ideas but I'm not sure how to deal with "hanger abouters"
 suggestions please  <3

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Linus quilt
« on: March 07, 2020, 14:43:33 PM »
I can't find a thread.
Had anyone finished theirs yet?
I have almost finished the blocks but am not sure of the best size.
If you have finished what size did you decide on?

29
Even the new, more positive me has hit a brick wall.
Whatever I read, try, practise or am told....I simply cannot square up blocks!!
It's ok if the Blocks are bigger than the ruler and bigger than they need to be,but, what if the edges are not parallel, even, smaller than the square ruler....what then???
Please how can I square up blocks easily???

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Favourite qui!t sizes
« on: February 03, 2020, 18:58:21 PM »
I know there are no hard and fast rules, but, it may be helpful to less experienced friends of we shared our favourite shapes ( square or rectangular ) and sizes for various projects.
This occurred to me as I have been asked to make a quilt for a new born baby and I am torn between 2 sizes.
I know there are lists but think it will be more helpful if people say which sizes Work best for them!
I'm wondering if 30 x 40 might be too narrow????
