Sewalongs and Competitions / Re: 2024 Jeans Sew Along
« on: February 01, 2024, 23:20:36 PM »
I am still stuck in catch up mode. I have a few projects that I would like to clear up now that all my machines seem to be working well.

I have a couple of back pocket design ideas floating around in my head that I may decide to do.

Confession; I may have to overhaul my jean pattern to give me more room now that I am - - ahem, older. This is a reality that recently slapped me right in the face and I really hate that when it happens. If I don't make those changes then I will be running (well, walking swiftly) on the treadmill for weeks and weeks. Good grief!!

Crazlyn, I don't know if you caught that I caught a mistake in my suggestion above? I said originally said "vertical" dart and what I should have said is horizontal. So sorry if that caused you problems.

I would take a (correction) horizontal dart in the front just below the zipper and taper to nothing at the side seam. Just pin (or baste with biggest stitches you have on your sewing machine) the dart and try the muslin back on to see what you get.

Like someone said, they always look wonky at this point so there is nothing you are doing wrong. Just go step by step and you will get there.

Let us know (or post a pic) how you get on!

Adding to say, you could do the opposite on the other leg (dart at the side seam and taper to nothing just below the zipper). It would be a good comparison.

Vintage Machines / Re: My 930

Well the 930 is up and running again. We received the capacitor parts last week and within 20 minutes my hubby had all parts soldered. It took a bit to put the machine back together since it had been a while. It would have gone faster but he and I had "differences" of opinions as to which body panel went on first  :S

This caught my eye this morning. I might jump in here  :thumb: if I have the right weight fabric in my treasure chest and I finish buttoning up the sewing machine repairs & cleaning and hemming a top from last year that was supposed to be part of my SWAP but I bailed on it .

@CCL  The GGS opened his gift yesterday. We will see how well that double stitching holds up on his puppy. I am not too confident even with the fusible interfacing backing. His dad (my GS) was super impressed that I made it so that made me feel really good and I suppose it was worth all the sailor words.

The GGS will be 3 years old in tomorrow and will open his bday present of "Sam the Dinosaur". That one should hold up well other than that loooong neck might get bent out of shape

The Stuffed Toy sewing shop is now closed until sometime next year.  :faints:

It sews so nice. I love the sound of it stitching a long. I can remember years ago that I almost hated this machine. I suppose all it really needed was a good cleaning and some nice oil. I made sure to clean all the furballs up after completing the bear. I will keep using this machine for a while longer until the Bernina 930 gets the repair parts installed and reassembled.
It will be interesting to see how I feel about the 930 now that the Universal is sewing so well.

Updating: The hubby took the knee controller apart and cleaned the contacts and adjusted the arm that makes contact. That gave me more control. Next he ordered a new belt (and a spare) and I installed that and boy did that make a difference! It sews like a dream. I am really loving the flat surface of the table and the sound of the mechanicals inside the machine as it purrs along. I fell in love all over again with this beauty.

This is the finished bear that is going to my hubby for all his help in keeping my old sewing machines going. He's not normally a stuffed animal kinda guy but he appreciates this one as he knows how much work goes in to making one like this and that I only make them for special people.

Here are both bears together. His is on the left.

Clean, oiled and moving. Not sure about sewing as I have realigning to do first of all the thread guides and I might as well clean the tension disks while I am at it. I did run the machine for a couple of minutes and discovered black bits of rubber on the sewing bed. Too tired to investigate last night but will pull the motor to see if the problem is there. I can’t have black goopy bits being tossed out while I am actually sewing.

I did notice that the knee pedal is not very controlled, it is either stop or fast. I think I can pull it off the table wall and use it as a foot control and maybe I will have more control. If I can’t slow it down that way then I better be ready to sew like crazy when I am ready to stitch up the fabric

I learned that the red indicator light is referred to as The Dragon Eye by the old sewing machine folks. I thought that was kinda cool.

Oh yes, it was pretty stinky alright. I cleaned the daylights out of any place I could reach with some alcohol on soft rags or q tips. I super quickly removed all the stuffed animals that were waiting to be wrapped then got after the machine. The circuit broad was put in a plastic bag and is out in our shop waiting for repairs. Actually I think it is airing out there. It will need cleaning too but I am not sure how to do that safely. I think I will leave that part up to the hubby  0_0
