Current Projects / Help with finding fabrics please - layer cake
« on: January 19, 2024, 10:35:53 AM »
Hello oh knowledgeable dark siders.

A friend of mine is about to undergo chemo and I'd like (if I can, you know time and not much of.......) to make her a quilt to snuggle on the sofa with.  I quite like The Simple Stack Quilt as it will be fairly quick and and am thinking of QAYG.  Her favourite colour is pale blue, has anyone come across a layer cake that is primarily pale blue?  I've had a quick look but I can't see anything.  Otherwise, I might just go all out colourful with a pale blue backing.

Thanks for your help.

Tech Know How / Posting Error message
« on: September 01, 2023, 09:32:57 AM »
I've just got a new computer and I'm having trouble posting replies.  I keep getting a "timed-out" error message.  I thought it might be because I'd opened a topic, got distracted and replied a little while later but I've just tried on a different message, opened and replied straight away.  Same problem.  I have hit enter quite a few times before the message will go.  Any ideas?

Embroidery and Embellishment / Tudor Rose
« on: November 28, 2022, 12:12:21 PM »
Hi All,

Is there anyone that would be able to embroider the tudor rose to make into a christmas tree decoration?  I am willing to pay of course, so if anyone can, please could you let me know how much you would charge and I'm possibly looking for more than 1.

Thanks,

Melissa

So OH and I have our own hobbies, me collecting fabric (cos I've not got round to do any actual sewing for a while) and him cars.  He has been saying for ages that I should leave a machine at his but I've not bothered but now with the nice weather coming, he is wanting to do some work on his cars, leaving me with time on my hands and potential thumb twiddling whilst I'm at his..  He loves antiques and has collected trunks of various sizes for storage purposes.  He was planning on having a shift around and has given me the largest one (which is probably 3ft long by 2ft high) to store a machine in and a "few" other bits.  He said, "you won't be able to get much in there but at least it'll be in one place".  Poor man!  Has no idea how canny we can be when it comes to hiding, I mean storing fabric.  I will be able to fit so much, sooooooooooooo much in there, and extend my stash.  Gosh I'll have a stash spread across the south east  0_0

Ideas though for storage in a trunk so it isn't all one big heap of a mess gratefully received!

House Beautiful / Funky velvet upholstery fabric?
« on: January 04, 2022, 13:29:29 PM »
Ok, so following on from my comment in plans for 2022, I really want to get this chair covered.  I really want velvet (which I may live to regret) and I want it funky.  The main colour of the room is purple, but has accents of hot pink, turquoise and lime.  Any ideas on where I could look for some velvet to match.  I don't care about the pattern, just the colours need to match (I've seen some with skulls on that I quite like).  If the worst comes to the worst, I will just do it in purple, but I really want it to be wild!  Anyone seen anything on their internet travels?

What lies beneath... / Pattern cutting for bras
« on: July 28, 2021, 21:51:52 PM »
I am fed-up of not being able to easily buy bras, and when I can they are generally something not very pretty and you need a mortgage to buy them.  I'm therefore thinking about having a go at making my own.  Patterns seems in short supply for smaller bands larger cup (32G UK size) so I am now thinking about learning to cut my own patterns.  I've requested details on the London college of fashion short course but can anyone recommend a good online course (pattern cutting, not making) and good pattern cutting books.

I know exactly what I want in a bra, just not how to do it.

Thanks.

In the wardrobe / Striped fabric dress help/advice.
« on: July 22, 2021, 11:57:32 AM »
I have a lovely striped fabric that I have always intended to make a dress with.  It is quite wide stripes (mustard with large  white dots in it) and then white background with a black-outlined floral pattern.  Sounds hideous but I love it.  I was planning on making a sort of 50's style dress (with less of a full skirt as it is for everyday wear) with the stripes of the bodice going diagonally from CF to shoulder and the skirt going horizontally.  However, due my, er, curvy derriere, my back skirt needs to be about an inch longer that the front.  I have to have the hem landing on the edge of a stripe but then the problem occurs at the waist as it will be obvious that there is a difference in the width of the first stripe.  I have procrastinated on this all weekend (which is when I was going to start the dress) and changed my mind, looked at different patterns but my heart is set on this and I know nothing else will live up to my imagination.  So how am I going to get around this?

Would it work if I shortened the back bodice accordingly so that the difference is more hidden in the diagonal direction of the bodice?  Any ideas?  I've not sewn for such a long time and I really need to get to it, whilst smojo (sew-mo-jo) is awakening!

thanks.

Edited to add and I am aware I will have to be careful with pattern placement to avoid the bullseyed nipple look  lol!

In the wardrobe / How much extra for checked fabrics?
« on: June 03, 2020, 09:24:21 AM »
Hi All,

I'm going to be making a tailored trouser suit for my friend's daughter; it's for her graduation next year.  She has picked out the fabric (a checked fabric in pink).  How much extra would they need to get over and above the suggested yardage to allow for pattern matching.  I really need to get this right as this young lady deserves a special outfit.  Thanks all.

The Show Must Go On / Fabric help please - cracked ice taffeta
« on: March 03, 2020, 09:18:41 AM »
DD has her prom this summer and she has asked me to make her dress.  Yes, she who will never ever wear anything "homemade" has asked her Ma to make her dress  0_0.  She has shown me a picture of what she wants and the fabric is cracked ice taffeta.  Does anyone know of any supplier, I spent a bit of time last night searching but there seems to be very little of this fabric around, and what there is is the wrong colour (she wants blue, light blue).

Thanks all (has been cross-posted with the Prom/Bridal board!).

Current Projects / QAYG Tutorial?
« on: December 31, 2019, 11:32:08 AM »
Hi All,

I purchased a Jinny Beyer quilt kit to make for my in-laws a couple of years ago.  I have done a couple of blocks, but my lovely DS1 moved my sorted piles of fabric and messed up my system and I haven't been able to face sorting through it again.  However, I am determined to get it done in 2020 and give it to them at Christmas next year.  (Eek, did I put that online for the world to see?!?!?!?!)   My trusty Janome died last year and I haven't been able to replace her so won't be able to quilt it as a whole quilt and I won't be able to afford to send it off the be quilted either, so I'm considering QAYG but don't really know anything about it (I am a novice quilter; clothes are my thing!)  Please could you recommend any good online tutorials (ideally with pictures) that tell you exactly how to do it.  Help this girl achieve her goal (see what I did there - sharing the responsibility for getting this quilt done  ;) :P :P)

Thanks all.

The Show Must Go On / Stretch net retailer
« on: May 12, 2019, 10:37:20 AM »
Just wondering if any of you dance peeps could point me in the right direction. I’m wanting to make a dress for my friends wedding and I need some mesh for it. I’ve had a look at a couple of “real life” retailers and what I’m looking for is a mesh that is like tulle, with a bit a stretch. I’ve had a look online for stretch mesh but it just seems to bring up powernet which I’m not sure is what I’m looking for.  If anyone can advise what I should be looking for and/or retailers, that would be great.  It has to be fairly translucent, oh and I’m looking for teal. I’ve attached a picture of the dress to give you an idea. Thanks

Fun with Fabric / Goldhawk Road? I have fabric!
« on: May 08, 2019, 08:02:09 AM »
I've still not found any fabric online for the dress for my friend's wedding, mainly because I'm looking for 2 different fabrics that are colour matched, so I think I'm going to have to go real shopping instead of virtual.  Has anyone been to Goldhawk Road recently?  Is it still worth going to?  Does it even exist anymore (seem to recall the road was being redeveloped and retailers were having to close)?

Thanks.

Patterns Discussion / Simplicity 3931 (Vintage)
« on: April 25, 2019, 12:25:56 PM »
Is there by any chance anyone has this pattern lurking in their pattern vaults that I could borrow to trace please.  This is the second option for my dress for my friends wedding.

I've put the link in above as simplicity seem to have used this pattern number a few times!

Thank you.
