Hi, I'm new... / Re: Hello there!
« on: November 29, 2023, 19:23:20 PM »
Hello and welcome :D
Nothing wrong with intermittent and sometimes (in my case mostly) bad sewing, I have been doing it for years
No doubt you will pick up all the good habits of the brilliant people here and I will continue sitting in my bad sewing corner wondering how everyone but me gets better at it  :D

Continued with the sort out of the room and managed to do enough to finish the horse head for GS2 and his nativity!  I will attempt a photo of him with it on Friday  :D

Oooh pretty!  I was sewing fur the other day and thinking how awful it is to sew...
I had forgotten that lame is just as bad!  It will need overlocking every single piece as it shreds worse than fur fabric!
I concur with @Lachica it will also need lining or interfacing, preferably the second.
Sequins are ok but you need to remove them from seams and hope the rest aren't attached to the ones you removed.
However, there are now plastic coated fabrics (pleather type of stuff) which they do in silver but I have no idea where you would get it, I just know I have seen it somewhere.  But then that would stick to the foot while sewing and be equally as much of a pain to sew!
Goes and stands with @Ouryve in the buy it for £14 corner  :D

@Ploshkin Fascinating stuff but I think I will stick to the learning curve from a third party  :D

I made an incredibly difficult drawstring bag to put my bread in.  It took five minutes and then I put the bread in it .... it works  :thumb:

@Ploshkin That is beautiful  :loveit:
Can you get a softer fabric by using finer threads or are you restricted on what thread you can use by what loom you use?

I am going to add that to my "in my dreams when I win the lottery" list!  They do look lovely don't they?
Unfortunately I can't fit even the smallest cabinet in my sewing space.

Bottersnikes and Gumbles .... Now a classic and originals are very collectable
I was literally (see what I did there) thinking about that book the other day and deciding to try and get hold of a copy for the grandkids.  I loved it as a young girl, my favourite barring Narnia!

@HenriettaMaria Yes they do, I got one of each from one of the charity shops  The other one probably has one hidden behind the counter as they always label their size if there is not one on it.  They also have an abundance of crochet hooks if anyone is looking for them.
I would just mention that not all charity shops stock craft items so don't be disappointed if you get a couple of fails.

Try charity shops.  They always have loads in a few of my local shops at a fraction of the price but they are hidden behind the counter. The only problem is they may be in the old sizes so you need to know both before going shopping!

It is literally called washable transfer paper for embroidery!
I could post a link but there are many varieties to choose from and I can't remember which brand I used.
The problem was it did not wash off properly under the embroidery!
I always just draw straight onto the fabric with a pencil, 4b with light colours and a tailor's chalk with dark colours as that washes out much easier than the transfer paper did!
Although it could have just been the make I bought it was quite a few years ago and I just had to throw the whole lot (embroidery too) in the bin as it was just a congealed mess at the end.  If you buy it, try a sample first to ensure it does wash off properly.

I would have said stash until we started sorting through the house and realised how many unused power tools OH has.  He humbly decided that he would no longer laugh at my stash as we sorted through literally thousands of screws that were in three (yes three) different boxes!  At least mine gets used!

Sewing Machines / Re: Getting on my own nerves!
« on: November 13, 2023, 10:03:40 AM »
While making corsets I found myself using my old Bernina Activa again as I found my newer Pfaff Ambition not delicate enough for the delicate bits.  But the Bernina struggled with the layers so I was back on the Pfaff for thundering through them and for when the boning was in due to it's bigger harp space. I currently have 6 machines in a tiny little bedroom (one is for GS1 to take home with him when his mum thinks he is capable enough to sew on his own) that barely has room for the one I have permanently set up!
If I could get just one machine for all I would jump at the chance but there really is no chance of that so multiples are the only way to go.
