Embroidery and Embellishment / Re: Pillowcases for Mom
« on: February 19, 2024, 17:09:14 PM »
Thanks everyone!  My mom had made the need for personalizing clear when she wanted to use a marker to write her name on the quilt I had made her. I was having none of that, so I took it home & embroidered a piece of the same fabric I had used for the backing & appliquéd it on.

From now on, I will personalize any textiles I buy or make for her.

Embroidery and Embellishment / Pillowcases for Mom

My mother lives in a long-term care facility. She recently asked me to order her a King-size pillow & 2 pillowcases. In the interest of seeing that the pillowcases get back to her, from the laundry, I embroidered her name on them.

She chose the colors & I like her choices.

@Sara-S

How adorable!  I like the other child's blanket too. Did you make that one as well @fajita ?

I suggest you look up 'bobbin winder spool adapter'  You can buy them very cheaply  from all the usual places. I have one and it works very well with most brand reels.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don’t always want to use the big cones, especially when I go to classes or workshops. I ordered one today.

If you have scrap pieces you can cut into squares, a 4-patch or 9-patch design could work.

That fabric is adorable & the lining looks very well-made.  This baby will be very lucky!  Is it here yet?

@Ellabella does the HD in the model # stand for Heavy Duty?  If so, it just may work on leather. I agree that you should just oil it, plug it in & see if it works before taking it to the shop.

At our guild meetings, we always have a Give Away table (for who ever is destashing). So at our last meeting, I gave away the OLFA, since I’m not using it.

Access All Accessories / The Tissue Pack holders that weren’t
« on: January 30, 2024, 12:10:15 PM »
At our last guild meeting, the goal was to make items we could sell at our quilt show this spring. I opted to make some tissue pack holders, based on a pattern provided at the meeting. (I don’t know who wrote it.)

The instructions didn’t work & as I eventually found out, the measurements were too small. Of course I couldn’t tell that until they were done. They look good, but they’re not marketable for tissue pack holders. I think they can work as gift-card holders.

Here’s an appliqué I made, using it. It’s sewn onto a dress to conceal a hole.

I have used the Cricut Maker for HTV. It works quite well.

It is pricey, but I got an e-mail offering a discount.  That made it worth buying.  The OLFA also uses a rotary blade. I have tried that one, but found it more difficult to use.

There are many of these on the market.  I just bought the Truecut360, which is the best I have tried.
https://truecut.graceframe.com/en/product/truecut-360

The reason is that it uses a rotary blade, rather than any type of straight blade.  It doesn't snag the fabric & makes smooth, clean cuts.  Of course it takes some practice to use, but it wasn't that hard to master.
It even works on soft leather. (I haven't yet tried it on thicker or stiffer leather.)

There are also handheld leather punches that you strike with a mallet.  They come in a greater variety of sizes. This type might be available in a size you need.
