Embroidery and Embellishment / Re: Does anyone know

Madeira 1090 looks very close to 1293 on my thread wound Madeira shadecard and is available in 1000m. Might be a possibility?

Technical Help / Re: Collars and waistbands
« on: May 24, 2020, 08:07:05 AM »
I have seen commercial skirt and trouser waistbands where the inner band has a binding on it's lower edge so no turning up and then the stitching in the ditch from the right side will always catch it in.
I often use this method for waistband construction, it also reduces a little of the bulk at the lower edge of the band and I can add a secret pop of colour to what may be a plain dark garment. I make the bias binding from offcuts of lining fabric or fine cotton from blouses etc. When I made jackets or skirts for work the linings were always unexpectedly bright. Cheered me up to know that.

Embroidery Machines / Re: Embroidery needle breaking

I suggest that it's thread tension problem due to you reducing the embroidery size by 25% and  almost certainly not reducing the stitch density accordingly.
Try stitching the embroidery at 100% + does the problem recur?

Try reducing by 10%, same question

Usually the instruction manual will tell you the min/max sizes of fonts, some cannot  be seen successfully much smaller than supplied. You would need to choose a different font.

Not a garment, but while hunting for a piece of vinyl to line a half barrel in which to plant a contorted hazel tree, today I found  blackout curtains from WW2 that mum gave me when DD was tiny and wouldn't settle to sleep in anything but true darkness. The fabric is still thick and a strong true black. They were sewn on my great grannies treadle Singer machine which my great aunt still has.

I have a pair of scarlet Gloria Vanderbilt jeans from 1978/9. As I remember, they were the first jeans cut specifically for ladies and have a white swan embroidered on the right front pocket. They're an 'old' size 10 - I was so skinny in my late teens, sigh, my DD wore them at a similar age and loved them too.
Also a Laura Ashley tiered floral skirt that I can't bear to part with although the elastic at the waist has perished. The oldest of all though are the two christening gowns, handmade by my great grandmother about 1905 and worn by 4 generations of baby girls (and my son - the first male child for at least 5 generations )  How she found the time to do embroidery, pintucks, broidery anglais and lace  - she was from Nottingham and was a lace maker- is beyond me.

Sewing Machines / Re: Atelier 6 (Janome) error code
« on: April 29, 2020, 20:32:20 PM »
The bobbin keeps jumping out of the housing and I keep getting an error code "Lo" - I've looked in my manual and can't find a definition.
Does anyone know what this code means?
(I've changed the bobbin several times and its a new needle which is securely in its clamp.)
 :(
With a Janome that code usually refers to 'overload' and you need to turn off the machine and check thoroughly for tiny scraps of thread caught in the bobbin area. Also check that the bobbin you're using is a 'proper' Janome one - it'll have a 'J' embossed on the central core bit.

@Iminei I trim the used stabiliser into rough rectangles and sew them together, using a long stitch and overlap of roughly 5mm.
I don't use my 'patchwork' for anything special but  it's useful if you are testing a design out or embroidering on thicker fabrics like denim.
I always move the design towards the side/corner of the hoop as well as the excess stabiliser is then as large as possible.

Embroidery and Embellishment / Re: Which threads.....

@Wychall  Empress Mill is still open for online orders. I use their cotton thread but haven't tried the embroidery thread, might be worth trying.

Technical Help / Re: Vogue 9278

Thanks for your replies, I was just confused as it seems counter- intuitive to be told to  stabilise a seam with stretchy  stuff, which is also bulkier than anything we've suggested.
I'll do as I usually do and re-purpose the narrow ribbons from rtw clothing

I've just had my first ever delivery from driessenstoffen ( thanks to whoever it was who introduced us to them  <3 ). Two
glorious lengths of jersey and I love the look of this pattern.

Just one question though: the pattern specifies the use of elastic as the shoulder stay, if I hadn't read the instructions, I would have used a narrow tape/ribbon as usual. Will it matter if I don't use elastic?

The ones I saw were machine embroidered by one of the ladies who works in the shop. The brooch pin was sewn on rather than being stuck on.

I've seen smaller versions with bobbin thread showing on the reverse and a  brooch barthing hotglued to the reverse in an arty crafty place in Salisbury which were being sold at around £26 !

I saw lots, about 10cm from wing-tip to wing-tip, with brooch pins on the reverse side at a local - ish p&q shop about 10 days ago for £4 each, but they all had a plain black reverse as they were not meant to be viewed from that side.

@sewingj   I 'upgraded' my handsewing needles a couple of years ago and found a good selection and reasonable prices on the John James website:  jjneedles.com. I bought together with a friend so we placed a decent order and delivery was good too.

ATM, if you download the useful "sewing needle guide ' leaflet there's a code for 25% discount on page 3 too :D

@Iminei     Hobkirks in Blackburn gave me 30 1000m Madeira Rayon 40 in a plastic storage box when I recently bought my Janome 14000, these boxes were on sale for £100, or very near that price at the time but I don't know if you were able to choose the shades that you wanted.
It might be worth giving them a call and appealing to their better nature?

Other than that good old fleabay might be helpful.

In the wardrobe / Re: Keep, recycle, or...?

I used to struggle too and had lots of clothes from previous lifestyles tucked away across upstairs rooms THEN we invited builders in to extend the rear of the house, both floors. Only one bedroom remained untouched, and was used for storage, the other three were gutted. This not only meant all wardrobes and cupboards had to be emptied and packed away but , as we slept on a mattress on the lounge floor for six weeks, I had a rail only on which to hang a few items and a plastic tub for smaller items. When we finally got to re-inhabit the upstairs and new wardrobes were delivered I left a lot of stuff packed and got rid of it 'sight unseen' as I know that if I'd unpacked it would never leave the premises. I can honestly say that I've not missed anything and now I follow the ' one in/one out rule' mostly ;)
